They, have seven placer and quartz
mines located.
The women were Mrs. May Mauvais,
Mrs. Martha D. Hume, Mrs. Alma
Haden, Mrs. J. Hcgee, Mrs. Ktta Deuioy
and Mrs. Lila Herron. They left Oak
land, each one fully equipped with
miners' outfits. They returned with
hundreds of ore samples and gold they
had panned from placer claims.

the Wor.'d' from Panama says :
Nicaraguan reports state that in an
uprising in Grenada an attack was
made on the barracks, but owing to a
strong resistance and the government's
activity in sending forces to the ecene,
the revolutionists were defeated.
The government troops recaptured the
town after some hours' struggle and
hard fighting. The revolutionists fled
toward Costa Rica, but it is thought
thev will be captured soon. !

issued, by the clerk of the county court
of the state of Oregon for the county of
Wasco, commanding me to collect the
delinquent, county, state and other

phants, however, kneel at the word of

a ladder against them in order to reach
the upper part of their sides in rubbing

tive and -practical disposition. Such
bad qualities as treaclrery and jealousy
are generally found in people with
I black, lusterless hair. The lighter the
hair the more sensitive and "touchy
the owner e-enerallv is. Brown hair
must be a. very desirable thing to pos
sess, for the hair readers say it is al
ways found on people havingin a high
degree common sense, good judgment
and reason. Red hair is a sign of hon
esty and also of cleverness. Nothing
whatever is said about freaks of tern
per as an accompaniment to red hair. It
may therefore be safe to conclude that
another popular idea has been dissolved
by the searchlight of science and in
vestigation.

Philadelphia Press. A large majority
of proverbs are of a satirical character
and are leveled against women. We
find, curiously enough, that the sever
est reflections upon the femiinine sex
emanate from those nations which have
the reputation of being particularly gal
lant, notably the Spanish, Portuguese
and Italian. Widows are invariably
made the butt of ridicule, wives are dis
missed with scant eour,tesjr and maid
ens are treated by proverb makers as
though they were worthy of constan
suspicion only.
