In other lands there are drinks far
beyond ours in strength and strangeness.
There is the Russian vodki for instance.
A gi'.l of it poured down a Carthagenian
mummy will set that long-dead person
to fighting all his Punic battles over
again. In the forceful language of the
West, "Two drinks of it will make a
man go home and steal bis own pants."
The West Indian gets from the cocoa
nut clear pure water, toddy and arrack,
which is a rock-splitting brandy. Of
their toddy Boyle says, "It iooks like
ekim milk and smells like 500 glares in
a pen."
The Marquesans have a seductive
drink called aroo. A number of young
boys sitting in a circle chew fresh cocoa
nut, and when it is sufficiently masti
cated expectorate it into a bowl that is
tiie common receptacle. Fresh water is
poured upon this delectable mixture
and it is allowed to ferment. The South
Sea islanders prepare the nva root in the
same way. Paul !u Ctiaillu once found
a wonderful drunkard in the person of
the king of Olenga Vombi. When he
waa an infant-, hlq fntliAr n.milrl ful-a him
to the top of a small tree and force him
to drink palm wine, until he came to
prefer it to his mother's milk,
It was the ingenious parent's ambi
tion to make him the champion boozer
of equatorial Africa, and he succeeded.
The king of Olenga Yombi in Du
Chaiilu's time had been solidly drunk
for 15 years, and when last heard from
was calling loudly for another gourdful.

Arthur Hodges, our efficient county
clerk, some time ago received a letter
from S. P. Dunn of Chico conveying the

W. A. Dunn, who was a resident of this
county. Mr. Dunn started to California
with some horses for the purpose of dis
posing of them in that state. When at
Butte meadows, Butte county, Califor

horse and instantly killed. The letter

Thin, Pale
Children
One satisfaction in giving
Scott's Emulsion to children is
they never object to it. fhe
fact is, they soon become fond
of it. Another satisfaction is
because it will make them
plump, and give them growth
and prosperity. It should be
. 11 M jf -
K111 to al1 ennaren who are
- ftoo thin, or too pale. It does
ot make them over-fat, but
plump.
It strengthens the digestive
rgans and the nerves, and fur
nishes material for rich blood.

Sick stomach means eick man (or
woman).
Why not. be well?
Sick stomach comes from poor food,
poor nourishment; means poor health,
poor comfort. Shaker Digestive Cordial
means health and a well stomach.
If we could examine our stomach we
would understand why it is that so little
will put it out of order.
But, unless we are doctors, we never
eee our stomach. We don't feel it. We
would feel it less if we took Shaker
Digestive Cordial.
Shaker Digestive Cordial makes your
stomach digest all the nourishing food
you eat, relieves all the symptoms of in
digestion, acts as a tonic and soon
makes you feel well and strong again.
The more you take, the less you feel
of your stomach.
