The Country Press.
No man ever paid a higher compli
ment to tbe country press than White
law Reid. At a dinner given the mem
bers of the press in New York some time
ago, Mr. Reid was called upon to reply
to the toast "An Independent Press,"
and he eaid the following:
"There is no such tbing in America as
.an independent press, unless it is out in
the country towns. You are all slaves.
'You know it and I know it. There is
not one of you who dares express an
honest opinion. If you express it, you
know beforehand that it will uot appear
in print. Iam paid $150 a week for keep
ing honest opinions out of the papers I
am connected with. Others of you are
paid similar salaries for doing similar
things. If I Bhould allow honest opin
ions to be printed in one issue of my
paper, like Othello, my occupation
would be gone. The man who would be
eo foolish as to write honest opinions
would be out on the streets looking for
another jib. The business of leading
journalists is to distort the truth, to
pervert, to villify, to fawn at the feet of
mam mom and to sell his country and
race for his daily bread, or for what is
about the same, his salary. You
know this, and I (know it, and what
foolery to be toasting an independ
ent press. We are the tools and vassals
of the rich men behind the screens. We
are jumping jacks. They pull the
string and we dance. Our time, our
talent, our possibilities, are all the
property of other men. We are intel
lectual prostitutes."
Of a for Africa.
The latest figures for gin and imports
into harbarian Africa have a dizzy look.
In 1S9.4 Gambia received 22,368 gallons,
Sierra Leon 242.686, the Gold Coast
1,302,899, Lagos 1,863,631, the Niger
coast protectorate 2,609,158. The conn
tries that supply tbe stuff are, of course,
the same countries that send the mis
sionaries, Great Britain, the United
States, Germany, France and Holland.

Weak Lungs
Hot weather won't cure weak
lungs. You may feel better be
cause out of doors more, but
the trouble is still there. Don't
stop taking your
Scott's
Emulsion
because the weather happens
to be warm. If you have a
weak throat, a slight hacking
cough, or some trouble with
the bronchial tubes, summer is
the best time to get rid of it.
If you are losing flesh there is
all the more need of attention.
Weakness about the chest and
thinness should never go to
gether. One greatly increases
the danger of the other. Heal
the throat, cure the cough, and
strengthen the whole system
now. Keep taking Scott's
Emulsion all summer.

to his long home Saturday evening, aged
69 years, says the Walla Walla States
man. The deceased had been afflicted
with spinal trouble for several years,
both legs being partially paralyzed,
which was the ultimate cause of death.
Ir. Kennedy came to Wa'Ia Walla
unty in the early days from Oregon
and located on a farm five and one-half
miles from this city on Mud creek where
he resided op to the time of his death.
The deceased leaves a wife and nine
children and a host of friends to" mourn
his loss.
Outlook for Wheat.
The Minneapolis journal, which comes
from the great wheat milling center of
the Northwest, in giving its views of the
future outlook for wheat, says :
Th6 price of wheat is encouragingly
firm considering the outlook for a 575,
000,000 bushel home crop. There aie
decreased wheat harvests in Germany,
Russia, France, Hungary, India, Aus
tralia and Argentina. Hence the bull
statistical position is eminently sound,
especially as the world's stock has
shrunk to 75,000,000 bushels. The out
look is favorable, of course, at present,
for the American farmer, as in 1879
where the country entered upon a
splendid period of prosperity after the
depression of tbe panic of 1873.

What use is therein eating when food
does you no good in fact, when it does
you more harm than good, for such is
the case if it is not digested?
If you have a loathing for food there
is no use of forcing it down, lor it will
not be digested. You must restore the
digestive organs to their natural strength
and cause the food to be digested, when
an appetite will come, and with it a re
lish for food.
The tired, languid feeling will give
place to vigor and energy ; then you will
put flesh on your bones and become
strong. The Shaker Digestive Cordial
as made by the Mount Lebanon Shakers
contains food already digested and is a
digester of foods as well. Ita action is
prompt and its effects permanent.

THE DALLES, OR
The Way to Advance.
The following new story is told of
the late Txrd Ampthill. When he was
a junior clerk in the foreign office, Lord
Palrrierston, then foreign secretary, in
troduced an innovation whereby in
stead of being solemnly summoned by
a verbal message the clerks were ex
pected to answer his bell. Some haugh
tj spirits. rebelled against being treated
like footmen and tried to organize re
sistance, but Odo Russell, as he then
was. ref used to join the rebellious move
ment, saying that whatever method ap
prised him most quickly of Lord
Paliuerston's wishes was the method
which he preferred. The aggrieved
clerks regarded him as a traitor to his
order, but he died an ambassador.
