There Last Might More Illinois
Miners Strike.
Fairmouxt, W. Va., July . 19. As a re
sult of yesterday's meeting at Willow
Tree Grove, near Monaugh, 225 miners
refused to work this morning. The driv
ers, being in sympathy with the miners,
refused to haul, and consequently the
rest of the miners who bad gone to work
were compelled to come out. About 60
miners at Pritchard, after hearing the
news from Monaugh, came out and the
rest will follow.
The Hutchinson, Luther & Palatin
miners were the next to come, and all
the men with the exception of those at
the Hite & Shaft mine will eoon be out.
Eugene V. Debs arrived here this
morning, and will hold a meeting at
Mononagh at 2 o'clock this afternoon,
returning here for a large meeting to
night, when it is thought will follow the
lead of the Mononagh men.

Efforts Blade to Persuade Canonsburg;
Miners to Strike.
Canonsbukg, Pa., July 19. About 500
striking miners from the Miners' Run
district passed through town today,
beaded by a brass band and a drum
corps. A halt was made at the mines of
the Canonsburg Coal company, where
they were met with armed deputies
and ordered to keep off the com
pany's property. They halted in a va
cant lot near by and eent committees
over to the mines to gather together the
miners. The mines of the company
closed down today to await the decieion
of the miners employed here.
. More Illinois Miners Oat.
St. Louis, July 19. Information has
been received to the effect that 450 men
employed in the shafts of the St. Louis
Consolidated Coal Company, at Collins
ville, III., went out today at the request
of the marching delegation.
THE NAVY ON A WAR FOOTING.
Mlanotemoh to be Made Available for
Service.
New York, July 19. A special to the
1 Herald from Washington says :
With a view to making available for
immediate service as many of the ships
of the navy aa possible, Secretary Long
is considering the advisability of placing
the monitor Miantonomoh in the re
serve. The Miantonomoh was laid up in or
dinary at League island in 1895, and
since that time but little attention has
been paid to the ship except to make re
pairs from time to time. Secretary Long
now intends to have the vessel put in
thorough condition so that she can be
ordered into reserve with the Columbia
and Minneapolis. This means that a
"short crew" with a full supply of stores
and coal will be kept on board and that
she can be made ready for sea service
within five days if the necessity arises.
While department officials declare
there is no significance in this move, the
attitude of Japan with respect to Hawaii
and Cuban troubles are sufficient to make
the administration desire to be in good

The Trne Remedy.
W. M. Repine, editor Tiakilwa, III-.,
"Cheif," says: "We won't keep house
without Dr. King's New Discovery for
Consumption, Coughs and Colds. Ex
perimented with many others, but never
got the true remedy until we ueed Dr.
King's New Discovery. No other rem
edy can take its place in our home, as
in it we have certain and sure enre for
Coughs, Colds, Whooping Cough, etc."
It is idle to experiment with other rem
edies, even if they are urged on you as
just as good as Dr. King's New Discov
ery. They are not as good, because this
remedy has a record of cures and besides
is guaranteed. It never fails to satisfy.

HOUSE BUKNBD: BOY DIED.
Singular Circumstances Attending a San
Francisco Lad's Demise.
San Fbancisco, July 19. As the life
of their little son was ebbing away, the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Torre, in
this city, was nearly burned down.
While the mother watched by the death
bed of her boy, the father helped to fight
the flames. When they were exting
uished the lad was dead.
A remarkable feature of the case is the
fact that the boy's death was the result
of injuries received Saturday while play
ing that be was a fireman, and aiding
some young companions to extinguish
an imaginary blaze in the very place the
flames afterwards broke out.
What use is therein eating when food
does you no good in fact, when it does
you more harm than good, for such is
the case if it is not digested?
If you have a loathing for food there
is no use of forcing it down, lor it will
not be digested. You must restore the
digestive organs to their natural strength
and cause the food to be digested, when
an appetite will come, and with it a re
lish for food.
The tired, languid feeling will give
place to vigor and energy ; then you will
put flesh on your bones and become
strong. The Shaker Digestive Cordial
as made by the Mount Lebanon Shakers
contains food already digested and is a
digester of foods as well. Its action is
prompt and its effects permanent.

SILVEB MAY RISE.
A Possible But Not Probable Effect of
the CloodyUe Discoveries.
Washington, July 19. Quite a num
ber of statesmen were asked what will
be the effect of the AlaBkan diecoveriea
on the silver question. Most of them
were inclined to the belief that the pos
sible production of the new gold country
had been greatly exaggerated for the
benefit of the transportation companies
and the local supply companies. ' Sena
tor Allison, when asked about the situa
tion, said :
''If the product of gold in Alaska is
really enormous it would of course tend
to approximate the value of gold and sil
ver, but the output would have to bo un
precedented to have much effect, for our
output of gold is very large, you must re
member." Another authority said without hesi
tation there could be possibly no effect
on the monetary situation unless the dis
coveries of gold were so stupendous as
to take gold out of the list of precious
metals.

United States and Japan Kidding for
Brazil's Spare Vessels. .
New Yoke, July J9. The Herald's
correspondent in Rio de Janeiro tele
graphs that the United States and Japan
have communicated with the govern
ment of Brazil with the idea of the pos
sible purchase of warships now building
for Brazil in England and Germany.
Owing to Brazil's financial plight at
this time it was recently decided to 6ell,
if possible, all the war vessels being built
for Brazil in the two countries named.
These are principally small boats.
Insured Invalids, Then Killed Them.
New York, July 19. The Journal and
Advertiser eays :
W. D.' Robinson, of Meridian, Miss.,
has been in the city several days in con
sultation with officials of some of the
principal life insurance companies. His
object is to bring to light the facts in a
conspiracy to defraud insurance compa
nies by insuring invalid?, and when dis
ease failed, to hasten the death of the
victims by means of poison. The scene
of the conspiracy is said to be laid in
Kemper county, Miss. Mr. Robinson
estimated the operation of the conspira
tors, given after conference with the
New York Mutual Reserve, the New
York Life, the Equitable and the Mu
tual Benefit, as follows:
Policies in which the members ap
peared as beneficiaries, -100; number
who died by disease, 30; number who
died by poison, 12; number whose lives
were attempted, 15; canceled, 60; amt.
cleared and divided by the plotters, $75,
000; still to be paid and divided, $15,
000. In this connection the Journal and
Advertiser reviews the operations of Dr.
W. H. Lipscombe, of Scooba, Miss., now
under sentence of death for the murder
of S. C. Stewart; Guy Jack, a Mississ
ippi merchant, indicted for murder by
the grand jury and out on bail, and
other Mississippi men. The Journal
and Advertiser claims the ramifications
of the conspiracy' in the South to be
practically endless.
A Demand by Russia.
Beelin, July 19. According to a spec
ial dispatch received here. Emperor
Nicholas has telegraphed to the sultan
demanding the immediate evacuation of
Thessaly. and threatening that other
wise Russian troops will cross the Turk
ish frontier. It is said here semi-offici-ally
today that all the powers except
Great Britain have consented to this
course.
The embassadors have informed the
porte that they wish a written declara
tion as to the intentions of the Turkish
government, which have hitherto been
communicated orally by Tewfik Pasha.
The embassadors have stated if this
is not forthcoming they will suspend the
peace negotiations and refer the whole
matter to their respective governments
with a view of adopting coercive meas
ures. ii otlce.
There will be a meeting of the fire de
partment - at the council chambers
