The Dalles Daily Chronicle, The only Republican Daily Newspapei n Wasco County. EASTERN OFFICE iSO to SSi TempU Court, N. Y. City. E. KATZ, Agent WEDNESDAY. - - - JULY 7, 1837 CONDITIONS IN THE SOUTH Mr. H. W. Scott, of the Oregom- an, has recently traveled through the South, and the editorial columns of his paper are now reflecting what he saw in this favored land. A recent article is as follows: "It is a fact that in our southern states, or most of them, there is a steady, quiet and general prosperity that does not exist in the North. It does not show itself in feverish en ergy, but is apparent in the easy and settled movements of industry and mercantile life. It has its basis in the moderation and contentment of the people, working in the many and great natural resources of the South ern states. Mr. E. St. John, a well- known railroad man, now of Ports mouth, Va., vice-president of the Atlantic Seaboard Line, in a talk published in the Oregonian one day last week, dwelt upon the fact that our southern states are much less affected by the depression of business and industry than the state of the North ; that there have been no seri ous business reverses in the South, and that the conditions of an order ly and growing prosperity are in operation there, uninterrupted by the hard times of which there has been so much complaint in most of the northern states." - A local in this issue notes the effect of a "giant" that got loose. It is al most impossible for the mind to realize the tremendous force ot a body of water shot from a nozzle. With 900 feet pressure, equal to about 400 pounds to the square inch, the sti iking force of a stream of water is simply astounding; big bowlders weighing Ions can be rolled around as easily as a kitten rolls a ball of yarn. At Grass Valley, Cal ifornia, several years ago a giant got loose and the stream tore the side out of one of the miners, just as a cannon ball would. In Washoe val ley the water pipes running from Marlette lake to Virginia City burst. The pressure was something more than 1600 feet, and before the water could be shut off at the head it came near washing the valley away. John E. Curtis, living in Deering, Me., a town few people outside of the state of Maine ever heard of, ac cumulated a fortune of 12,000,000, nearly all of which he bequeathed to charitable purposes. Among the beneficiaries may be mentioned wid ows, aged men and aged women, hospitals, free public libraries 'and benevolent fraternities and societies. "Whatever may be said about the methods ot obtaining it, there has never been a time in the history of the world when so large a propor tion of the accumulated wealth of the rich went finally into the hands of the poor as now. Religious in stitutions may not receive as much as in former ages, but charitable in stitutions get a grest deal more. The New York Journal of Com-, merce has recently shown from the reports of the United States mint that between 1873 and 1896 there has been an increase in the world's supply of mcney as follows: Silver coin, $2,498,000,000; gold coin, $1, 580,000,000, and the Journal alleges that this 'is the most stupendous in flation of metallic money in the his tory of currency." We will wager that in spite of this "stupendous in flation" the Journal of Commerce is not overburdened with "metallic money." East Oregonian. Mr. Astor, grandson of old John Jacob, who made a fortune dealing in furs, caused Astoria to be on the map and Wa&hingtota Irving to write the interesting story of its settle ment, is mad. No less a personage than the queen of England has slight ed him, or rather his paper. The amusing part of the affair is the openly-expressed chagrin which Mr, Astor indulges in. He should come over to this side of the pond, quit monkeying with royalty, and run a good, solid American paper, as we do. Armor DeCosmos is dead, passing in hi checks July 5th at Victoria. He crossed the plains in 1858, pack ing the name of John Smith with him. In California he had bis name changed by the legislature to the broad and suggestiye title "A lover of the world." It is said that he made the longest speech on record, talking against time as a member of the British Columbia legislature, and (if we remember correctly) speaking for twenty-four hours. He made the legislature tired ; but he won his point. FOR SALE. Sleeves have reached their limit and the most approved models are less balloon-like than heretofore. A i'opvxap. combination is very fine French cloth with sleeves, belt and shoulder-ruffles of shaded velvet. . Shaded velvets arc quite as popular for summer as they were during the winter. As millinery trimmings, when judiciously rsed, nothing can be more elegant and desirable. New jackets have sleeves large enough to accommodate the enormous pufflness of the dress shoulders, and while this, of course, accentuates the size of the arm, that fact seems to be no objection. Parasols seem to have become mere ly forms on which to exhibit the most enormous quantities of lace and other thin materials. The amouift of goods that may be put into one of the fash ionable parasols of the day is almost past belief. Lace and embroidery, embroidered lace especially, will be among the .leading trimmings for the summer. JShere seems to be no limit to the ways in which these beautiful garnitures are used, as something new is brought out almost every day. . .
