AID SHOULD BE GIVEN.
Continued from Third page.
was matted and stood out nearly straight
with dirt. Shu had nothing on but a
burlap tieil around her waist with a
string. The mother was summoned to
court ami the child was awarded to the
care of this society. The generous
ladies of The Dalles had a new outllt
ready for the little one and a woman
hired to bathe her and remove at least
the worst of the dirt, but no washing for
the first time could possibly remove all
of it, but there was such a transforma
tion in the child that the mother hardly
recognized her when bidding Iter good
bye on the cars. The little one, to make
matters worse, had learned to use very
bad language, but she had only been in
the Home two months when she was
taken by a well-to-do and highly re
spected hiiiy residing near Portland.
She is now attending the public school
and doing extremely well. She lias en
tirely forgotten her experience in the
Home and with her mother. 1 have
been intormed that the mother is dead,
and alto the father. This I consider to
be a great blessing to the child.
The foregoing is only a sample of the
many eases that are looked after by this
institution. The management informs
their fiiends at The Dalles and the edit
or of this paper that assistance is needed
as the Iecislature not having appropri
ated funds, this valuable institution for
the care of homeless children may, in all
probability, have to close its doors, un
less the public fall in line and assist all
in their power. Several counties have
been called on, but as yet only one-half
of them have responded. Should they
all come in and do their part, this soci
ety would be able to get along without
asking further charity of any one, and it
is only a small amount which has been
asked. The society has the endorsement,
of the county court of this county among
others, but as its income is not sufficient
to keep it running, this appeal is made
to the charitably-uisposed citizens of The
Dalles to assist it all in their power.
Superintendent Gardner will, in the
course of n week or two, make a thor
ough canvass of citizens and endeavor to
get contributions and membership sub
scriptions. The membership subscrip
tions are $o per annum, but all other
donations will be thankfully received.
A good barn was built adjoining the
home, and it was the intention of the
management to keep some cows and to
raise their own vegetables, but on ac
count of lack of funds it has been im
possible for them to purchase any stock
or improve the place as it was originally
intended; but if the generous public
will do their best to assist a deserving
cause, the good work will still go on.
The society has on hand at the pres
ent writing twenty-five children, fifteen
of whom are boys anil ten girls. Of the
boys there is one desirable aged 4, three
aged 0, five aged 7, three aged S, two
aged 1-1, and a colored boy aged 10. Of
the girls there is one desirable aged 3,
with fair complexion, blue eyes and
curly hair; one aged 5, with light, com
plexion ; several ranging in age from S
to 10; two aged 11, and one l.'J. The
foregoing children under the age of 8
years will he placed out in desirable
homes for legal adoption, and those
above that age on indenture; that is to
say, to ha brought up aa one's own until
they become of age. In addition to the
foregoing, this society has the custody of
a 9-months-old baby girl, wi'.L light
complexion and blue eyes, also for adoption.

I recently a South American boa con-

i Inrgv python from we.it Africa. It
i did not succeed, however, the python
being" the .stronger of the two. and it
withdrew. About two hours later the
keeper found the same snakes lighting
for another rabbit. As the keeper
supposed that the boa. which was the
weaker of the two. would again give
up its prey, he left them to themselves
and went home. The next morning- ho
was horror-stricken to iind that the
boa had not let fro its hold and had
been swallowed by the python as a
pendant to t'.so rabbit. The boa was
nearly seven feet Ion;; and correspond

which proved fatal to the boa. Its

Chasing butterflies for the richest
man in the world is now the occupation
of one of the most striking looking
characters seen in the streets of Lou
Angeles. He is SL' years old, keen-eyed
straight, and vigorous, with the step and
alertness of a man whose life has been
spent out of doors. His name is George
W. Dunn, and he has leen snaring but
terflies since I5MO, when he enine to the
state. He is a naturalist of tlie Audubon
typo. He knows all the books by heart,
hut he knows better than all the book of
nature, and has spent his existence turn
ing Its leaves. He has searched the fields
and forests of nil the Pacific states, of
Hritish Columbia, lower California,
Mexico :nd South America, and has 12
times tramped over central America--always
after plants and insects.
Over at. Trig, England, lives an old
man who is chiefly known to the world
because of his immen-ie wealth, hut who.
if he were poor, would be famous be
cause of his researches and knowledge
as a naturalist. Tie is Huron de Roths
child, and at Trig he has a large three
story building, which he is filling with
entomologienl specimens. He- heard of
Mr. Dunn some time ago. and has em
ployed him to make a collection on the
coast of Mexico. Dunn has already sev
eral thousand butterflies ready to ship
to August. Belmont at New York, who
will forward them to Trig. Each is
placed iu a three-cornered envelope, so
arranged that the delicate inclosurt1
