San Fi-.anci-co, May 2S. The Tort
land rate war between the Southern Pa
cific and Oregon Railway ifc Navigation
Company was on in real earnest this
morning when the Sotheru Pacific made
a cut meeting the first-class rate of 10
and the second class of $" maintained by
the steamship company. Scarcely had
the cut been officially announced when
a dispatch irom Portland announced tbe
steamer rates at $G first-class and $! second-class.
The first cut was made less
than a week ago, and yet rates to Port
land havesuffered a reduction of more
than 50 per cent. It is quite likely that
Jurther reductions will be made.

Tbe importance of this invention will
be appreciated when we realize what a
proportion of the community are victims
of some form of stomach troubles.
Thousands of pale, thin people ba-e little
inclination to eat, and what they do eat
causes them pain and distress.
The Digestive Cordial of the Shakers
