OSMAX PASHA'S PI.AX OF CAMPAIGN'
Will ltccall ! Turkish Army In
Kplriis it ml Join It With the
Army of Tliossaly.
Athens, April 24, 0:30 p. m. Larissa
lms been completely evacuated by the
Greeks, who spiked their gnns and car
ried away nil the movable cannon and
munitions of war.
Athens, April 24, 7 p. m. All tele
graphic communication with Larissa is
interrupted, but it is understood that
the retrent of the Greek army was con
ducted with the best of order. The ex
citement and disquiet at Athens be
cause of the sudden abandonment of
Larissa continues, but the tranquility of
the city is unbroken.
The foreign warships have been sig
naled off Phalerum.
Athens, April 24, midnight A special
dispatch received from the frontier ns
Eerts that the Turks, while attacking
Mati, were repulsed several times yes
terday. At 0 o'clock in the evening, the
Greek forces were obliged to give way.
The Greeks retreated in good order on
Karacles. where they are intrenched.
Athens, April 25, 2:30 a. m The
wounded remain at Larissa under pro
tection of the Red Cross flag.
3 a. m. The Saturday evening papers
counseled the people of Athens to re
ceive the bad news with patience and
sang froid, considering that the army
fought courageously in defense of the
national honor, paying the price by
heavv sacrifices.
A Seiui-OtHcial Announcement.
Athens, April 23. The following
semi-official announcement wbb made
this afternoon :
"In a fierce engagement at Mat! yes
terday the troops fought heioically until
C o'clock in the evening, and compelled
the Turks to retreat, whereupon the
Turks were heavily reinforced, and our
positions were shaken aud a retreat
ordered. It is not yet know if the re
treat was general."
A second dispatch from the headquar
ters of the staff says :
"Our troops are concentrated along
the line of Pharsalosip, and in conse
quence of these operations the abandon
ment of Tyrnavos and Larissa is con
sidered inevitable.
The Xuwa From Other Sources.
London, April 24. Dispatches from
Athens this afternoon eay after a des
perate battle at Mati, in which the
Greeks were outnumbered, they retreat
ed with heavy loss, abandoned Tyrnavos
and Larissa, and removed their head
quarters to Pharsalosis, a small town on
the right bank of the Pharealitis, and at
the north foot of the spur of the Chassi
diari mountains.
Paius, April 24. A dispatch from
Athens confirms the report that the
Greeks nave ubandoned Tyrnavos and
Larissa and concentrated on the second
line of defense, at Pharsalosis. The
news caused the greatest agitation in
political circles, and diplomats are freely
diBcuasing the question aa to whether
the time has not arrived for the powers
to take immediate steps to arrest the
further advance of the TurkB in the
Greek peninsula.
In Sleht of Larissa.
Volo, April 24. The Turkish advance
forces are reported to be in tight of

OTJIAN PASHA'S CAMPAIGN.
He M ill Almiiunti lCpirus mid Strength
en His Invndliig Army.
Paeis, April 24. It is stated in a dis
patch from Constantinople this evening,
that Osman Tasini's plan of campaign
is to recall all the Turkish forces in
Epirus, leaving only a strong garrison at
Janina, and to abandon the province.
The Turkish army in Epini3 will be thus
able to effect a junction with the army
in Thessaly by marching northward
around the mountains dividing the two
provinces. Osman Pasha would have
the whole Turkish force at his disposal,
and would be able to deal a decisive
blow.

Refuses to Itrenk all Diplomatic isola
tion AVI til Greece.
Constantinople, April 24. As pre
viously announced in these dispatches,
the Turkish government some d.iys ngo
called upon Bnlgana as a vassal of Tur
key to break off all diplomatic relations
with Gteece and expel the Greek consuls
and Greeks from Bulgarian territory.
The Bulgarian government took the
matter under consideration, and it is
now announced has declined to comply,
declaring she will observe neutrality
during the war between Turkey and
Greece. This refusal of Bulgaria to ac
knowledge her vassalage to Turkey is
regarded as a very important departure,
and as foreshadowing a declaration of
independence by Bulgaria.
ltulgnrln Insurgents in M need on In.
Sofia, Bulgaria, April 24. An insur

Macedonia.
Insurrection in Alnanln.
London, April 24. According to dis
patches today an insurrection has broken
out in Albania. Turkish troops are said
to be participating in the revolt.

MONEY IN THE ASHES.

On eveiry dumping1 ground where the
city contractors of Brooklyn place their
ashe.s one may see constantly Italians
working hard leveling1 the heaps, as
load after load Is deposited, and care
fully placing: the tomato cans aud other
eait-oil' pieces of tinware in piles In
tLuiiselves. The contractors do not ob
ject if the householders put old cans
among the ashes, for ,tliis insures n
eiueful leveling' by the Jtulians at the
dumping grounds at no expense to the
contractors.
The revenue from these cans tliat are
collected by the hundreds of thousands
is a matter of surprise to most peisons.
A two-horse load brings- from $G to $3.
It takes several days of hard work to
get a big wagon load, but the Kalians
don't seem to mind the labor of it, for
there is money immediately in sight as
the piles of tin cans grow. They watch
jealously their picking grounds, and
sometimes make special arrangements
with the contractors for the privilege
of scraping and raking the ash heaps
over.
The tin cans are sold to men with
furnaces, who place them in n big cal
dron and under a slow fire anelt the
tin and solder and run that part off for
future use and sale. Almost all the tin
and solder is sned by this process, and
is salable for use in making more cans
for preserving vegetables.
The heat is then made intense and
the iron that remain, is melted and cast
Into sash weights. The demand for
these old cans is said to be greater than
the supply, and one of the most valuable
of 'the scavenger privileges that the
Italians in large cities assume in that
of working over an ash dump. N. Y.
