Constantinople, April 22. (Delayed
in transmission.) It is stated here that
one of the Turkish brigades which had
been pushed forward on the plains of
Larissa has been unable to advance fur
ther owing to the floods caused by rains
and the consequent rise of the river Sa
lembria. Edhein Pasha telegraphed
asking for the immediate dispatch of
pontoons to enable the troops to cross
the river, trie Greeks having blown up
the bridges. These reports had a very
depressini: effect here when taken in
conjunction with the formidable resis
tance which the Turks have met with
around Tvrnavos.
When a person is losing flesh and
wasting away there is cause for alarm.
Nuihini: so worries a physician. Con
sumptives would never die if they could
reg.un their usual weight. In fact there
would be no consumption if there was
no wasting of the system. The cause of
this loss of flesh is a failure to properly
digest tin food eaten. Nine-tenths of
all of our diseases date hack to some de
ranueinent of the stomach.
The Shaker Digestive Cordial will
stop this wasting oi the body. It acts
by causing the food we eat to be digest
ed so as to do good, for undigested food
does more barm than good. The Cor
dial contains food already digested and
is a digester ol foods as well.
Laxol is the best medicine for chil

The little girl, about 5 years old, had
been playing on the porch but a few
minutes before the accident. Her bon
net strings were tied twice around her
neck to keep the bonnet in position
more securely. She slipped when climb

strings caught on a twig projecting not

"llow do the Japanese compnre with
the Chinese cs servants?" a gentleman
asked of a life-long- friend who had had
experience with help of both national
ities, "There is no comparison," was t hem-pi;.-.
"The Chinese are effieit nt, but
they are awfully set in their v. ays. li
yon give a Chinaman an order to-d.iy he
will do that very bame thing: the next
day. and every other day, no nui'tor
hov absurd it may be. unless cxpre?..h
toid not to do so. A Japanese will use
his own judgment ami nave you u lo of

they are naturally courteou. and n dic

"What delights me with the .laprne.-c-is
that they are so careful and e-coroni-ieal,"
this lady continued. "Nothing
'a ever wasted in the kitchen since
Bohma was installed, and my butcher
bill.? are lessened considerably. Then
-die is always scrubbing up the tables
and dressers, and 1 believe she puts on
cl.an clothing every day. 1 always see
her washing- hanging out late in the
afternoon."
Inquiry discovers that there are a
great in any Japanese in the big cities
oi the unici, and that every ship that
comes brings a fresh relay of 20 or .'10.
A Japanese mission established in
Brooklyn finds hom?s for any number
of thc:e adventurers. As the new
comers, r.omaft . rwhattheirproficicncy
or social standing may be, aie totally
unaeip-.r.nud with localities, the rate of
wagi etc., they gladly accept the do
mestic service which gives them shel
ter and food for present needs. The
managers report that those supplied
with place:; invariably give satisfaction.
A i.umher of Japanese g-irls and women
who carae over to the world's fair were
stranded in the country and have had
to support themrelves as best they
could. All these have taken refuge in
housework or have been engaged as
sewing maids. They came originally
to dance or sinjr or form a part of a
.Japanese booth or domestic "interior."
Their aim, after being; dismissed, was
to make money enough to return home,
but, as is not unusual, they see the ad
vantage of life in America and have de
cided to I'm here.
Of late years many businessmen have
lived for months or years .in Japan,
hating1 their famiiks in residences.
Their Japanese servants have accom
panied them to America and ne.'phbur.s
of the.-e returning absentees, noting the
eflicieuey of their eastern domestics,
have gotten them to bring out relutivcs
or friends to serve in a like capacity in
their households; thus the infection
.spreads. The Japanese consul in New
Turk has sometimes as many as :.'.") ap
plications in a single duy for servants.
"I want a cook anil a butler. 1 hear
the Japanese are so thoi ouglrly reli
able," says a servant-hunting house
keeper. "You must excuse my trou
bling you," slu' adds, as if dawns on her
that the consul does not necessarily
keep an employment agency.
"We sometimes lir.d places for our
countrymen newly-landed," .-ays the
consul, and then he turns her over to
his secretary, who in turn, directs her
to an uptown lint where a Columbia col
lege student keeps an impromptu in
telligence bureau for fellows of his rno?.
These college lupJrantf. think well of
the i$20 or $:: a month which such po
sitions give th-m. They work in these
various callings for a year or two until
they accumulate a little money and then
they finish their college eours.- or act
up business for themselves. One of the
partners in a big Broadway ntore de
voted entirely to Japanese wares wan
two yenro ago a trusted "man of all
work" in a well-known American fam
ily. He saved $1,500 and won the last
ing respect and friendship of his em
ployer, who wrrs loath to lose him.
