TI1K Hit FIGHT.
Wheoluclc Siijo Stunrt Only Can Uv
eitis us to tli Place.
San Fkancisco, Fcq. 10. W. K.
Wheeloch, who, with Dan Stuart, ar
ranging the Fitzdlmmona-Corbett fight,
arrived today from Reno. Ho camo to
meet Stuart. Wheelock professed ig
noranco of where the fight would tako
place. He said that only Stuart could
settle that. Said he :
"No one has any authority to say
where the fight will take place. In fact,
a battle ground has not been decided
upon, and will not be until Stuart arri
ves. "However, it is determined that either
lleno or Carson will get the contest.
Either city can provide the requisite ar
rangements. As far as situation is con
cerned, one is as convenientaBthe other.
The residents of both cities want the fight
badly, and are making all sorts of offers
to us. The business men of Carson have
promised to put up a building for the
ring, and the Kenoites have offered a pa
vilion that I think would accomodate
the crowd."
Wheolock says that the fight will take
place about noon March 17, so ueople
from this city and the Pacific coast gen
erally would be compelled to stay over
one day in Nevada. They could leave
this city on the 10th, arrive in Nevada
on the morning of the 17th, see the fight
in the afternoon, leave for San Francico
in the evening, and arrive on the morn
ing of the 18th.
Ticket Decided On.
Chicago, Feb. 10. A dispatch from
San Francisco says:
Dan Stuart, who left Carson City,
Nev., last night, reached here this morn
ing, and spent the day in conference
with officials of the Southern Pacific
railroad. The result confirms the state
ment sent oat by ttie Associated Press
last Monday that the Corbett-Fitzsim-nions
fight will take place at Cirson
City. It was decided the Eastern tickets
should read "from Ogden to Carson."
Stuart will probably leave in the morn
ing for Carson.

The Success of Koyiil Miser Company's
Expedition.
London, Feb. 10. Sir George Goldie,
'couimandiug the Koyal Niger Company's
expedition against the emir of Nupe,
-cables from the palace of the emir at.
Bida, January 29th, that the palace has
been captured and all the members of
the expedition are well. The dispatches
yesterday stated that Bida w'as to be
bombarded January 27th. A private
telegram today says Lieutenant Thorn
sen, of the Leicestershire regiment was
killed.
The capture of Bida probably com
pletes the destruction of the Fulah
powers and will most likely add to the
territory of Great Britain in Africa.
The dispute between the emir of Nupe
and the Niger company grew out of the
emir's practice of executing slaves by
the wholesale, after raiding territory
under protection of the company to ob
tain victims. The British punitive ex
pedition consisted of 500 Pausa troops,
six Alaxim rapid-fire guns, '2G mounted
European officers and 900 carriers,
backed up by a flotilla of stern-wheel
river steamers. The Fulan army was
said to number nearly 'JO.000 foot and
2000 cavalry. The emir of Nupe is the
most powerful vassal of the great Mo
liamuiedian empire of Sokoto.

lery, assistant superintendent of streets
has lodged a queer complaint with tile
cheif of police the oddest, in fact, of
any the the departeuient remembers
having received from a city official.
A mysterious woman who has put in
her spare tune for several weeks past in
gazing down from a window on San
Pablo avenue into the office of the super
intendent of the streets has become a
positive annoyance to Ellery, and a po
lice was detailed to inform her that a

mean an arrest and possibly an impris

GREAT GIRL.
She Pleases tho Men ut tho Hoarding
House.
"Greatest girl at our boarding-house
you ever saw," declared Qulfkly, with n.
giggle, according to tlic Detroit Free
Press. "Never says what you expect
her to iy, nnd you'd hv disappointed
if she did, after hearing her.
"Dry goods clerk sits opposite her and
asked the other day if she really
thought, there were bargains in the
matrimonial lottery. 'Of course there
are,' she answered, with n lnugh. 'I my
self have been marked down from 33
to 25.'
"Old bachelor that sits next to her n.t
the table spilled his ice cream in her
lap. She never screamed nor ran away,
but effusively took him by tho hand
and congratulated him on the coolness
of the entire proceeding.
"Dude boarder had the nerve to pro
pose to her and she took half an hour
explaining to him how it was all she
could possibly do to support her mother
and herself. When she thought, of tak
ing on any more obligations she would
certainly have nnothcr talk with him.
Theehumpwcnt around telling it, proud
as a turkey gobbler.
"Ueal estate fiend wanted to sell her
a lot for twice wluit it was worth. She
closed the deal by offering to take half
his commission and give him a quit
claim to the lot. He. still scratches his
head and looks at her from the corner
of his eyes.
"Think of laying my own fortune at
her feot. Haven't the slightest idea
that she will accept and for that very
reason am inclined to think that she
will."

Ho Went Up with It. However, When the

"Nicotine." said the moralist, accord
ing to the Washington Star, "is a ter
rible drug."
"I sometimes think that it doesn't
hurt a person who indulges in modera
tion," responded the Star reporter, who
was smoking a cigar.
"That's the danger of it. It i the
more pernicious became, of itsi many
insidious phases. II' T had my way I'd
abolish every leaf of tobacco from the
markets. It's a constant temptation
to waste, and 1 am thankful that 1 never
squandered mv resources in any such
way."
"You never smoked?"
"Never."
"Nor chewed V" . .-
"Certainly not." '
"Nor used snuff?"
"The idea is preposterous!"
"I suppose you must have saved a
great deal of money, then? These
small expenses count up very rapidly.
But, of course, a man must invest his
money to get as comfortable an income
as you appear to enjoy. A friend of
mine, was telling me about, how' you
laid the foundation for your fortune.
It was a small speculation, was it
not?"
"Urn yes, it was."
"Would you mind telling me just how
you managed it?"
"Why, you see, a friend of mine who
knows all about the market gave me
a tip and I bought some stock in the
tobacco trust."
ON SLIPPERY STREETS.
The Only AVay to 'Walk to Keep from
Falling.
There are right and wrong ways to do
most things, and walking on icy side
walks is no exception to tho rule, says
the New York World. Many people
follow the wrong method, and uh a. re
sult they often make exhibitions of
themselves more pleasing to tin; specta
tors than to the exhibitors. Falls are
frequent in New York city during the
winter. Sonic of them are absolutely
dangerous and many are painful.
The dangers of slippery i.ud icy pave
ments may be reduced ton. minimum b.v
using caution when walking. By going
on tiptoe and keeping the heel of the.
shoe from striking the pavement until
the foot is firmly in position slipping is
moided. If-, on the contrary, you start
with the heel and toe gait popular witb
pedestrians your heel will slip from un
der you and you fall before you have
had time to select the safest spot.
This is readily explained by the fact
that when the ball of the foot is placed
on the ground a large section of the shoe
touches the pavement and the body
must necessarily be pretty well bal
anced on the foot. But when the heel
conies down first only a small portion
of the shoe touches the pavement, an.d
often, the foot is well in advance of tlio
body. Try it once and be convinced
that the mincing walk of the typical
dandy is sometimes safe if not grace
ful. Jjuro HafcBuiird.
Among the numberless stories of the
quick wit'and felicitoiiK sayings of Dr.
Oliver Wendell Holmes is one connected
with the breakfast given in his honor
by the publishing firm of Houghton.
Osgood & Co. on the occasion of hU
seventieth birthday, says the Youth's
Companion. Not long nfl;r the break
fast he met a friend who had been a
guest on that memorable occasion, and
had written one of tho many bright
poems which formed part of tho en
tertainment. In referring to the late
festivity, the doctor said to his friend:
"I knew there would be a good many
Ihings said that would bo calculated
to draw tears. I was resolved that I
would not cry tlmt nothing should
miiko mo cry; mid so 1 went to the
breakfast determined to maintain a
rigid upper eyelid!"

Electric Bitters is a medicine suited
for any season, but perhaps more gener

feeling prevails, when the liver is torpid
and sluggish and the need of a tonic and

perhaps fatal bilious fevers. No medi

WITH THE SCIENTISTS.
When water freezes ft expands with
a force which Trautwine estimates at
not less than 30,000 pounds to the

Tho water animals were lower in or

found their existence easier than did
the animals exposed to the vicissitudes
of the atmosphere.
