The Dalles daily Chwmicle, The only Republican Vail; Newspapei n Wasco County. SATURDAY. JAN. 2. 1807 EASTERN OFFICE ZM to 234 Temple Court, N. Y. City. E. KATX, Agent. OPENING THE RESERVE. The question of opening tbo Cns. cade forest reserve to the pasturage of stock is one agitating the people nlong the eastern slope of the Cas cade mountains, just at present side tracking all other questions. There are not less than :io0,000 sheep pas tured on the reservation, or that were pastured there previous to the recent order prohibiting them. As spring opens, these immense Hooks must find pasturage, and being shut off from their accustomed mountain ranges, they will be forced to find feeding grounds on the foot-hills and in portions of the oountiy now pas tured solely by cattle. The resnlt will not only be disastrous to the sheep industry, but by overcrowding the pastures left will react on the cattlemen. In the meanwhile the factions are quarreling as to what is best for all. One proposition is to throw the whole reservation, excepting small reserves, open to the pasturage of stock. Another is to have a superin tendent who will assign grazing grounds to the different .flocks; and yet another to open that part south of the "Warm Springs icservation to sheep, and make the portion north of it only subject to pasturage of cattle. The proposition to have a super intendent who would assign feeding grounds originated in the mind Of some person not two degrees re moved from imbecility, and was probably the means devised for get ting a job for himself. The other proposition about making part of the reservation open only for cattle is a tlifferont affair: but still impractica ble, for whatever else is done, con gress nor the department is not going to make one law for one part and another law for another part. It is going to be a difficult matter to get the reservation opened at all, and unless the effort is combined, gen eral and unanimous, it might as well be abandoned. it- "We are told Air. Steele desires to lie sent to "Washington as the repre sentative of the sheepmen, to assist congress i in straightening out the angle. Tin's would be a nice little trip for Mr. Steele, but what he could accomplish is more than the man of nverage mind can figure out. H our senators and congressmen cannot get what we want, by what power divine loes"W. G. Steele expect to move to action the powers that be? He is only an embryo toad, so to speak, wuuii at, nome, unu in tlio great po litical sea at "Washington he would Le as hopelessly lost as a tadpole in the Pacific ocean. If we nre mis taken ; if Mv. Steele, in his capacity of a private citizen can accomplish more than our whole congressional delegation, then in the name and in terest of the great commonwealth of Oregon, let the next legislature in Test him with the senatorial totv and he will be all.poverful. In the meanwhile factional fighls must he dropped and the whole peo ple demand the opening of the re serve to the pasturage of stock; other matters can be attended to afterwards. Tho Dalles is hijviii" a little more (untie than it fcardto put up with, and it would not ijottqiismjj if a vigilance soeioty should take a hand ir. tho matter if it is not terminated. As a fitting In ginning of the new year vvc would - Ikcto-flee some no tion taken concerning the develop, meiit of our coal fields. If anything is to be done it should bo done at once, and if we are not blooded enough to dig up SoOO for our own benelit, whon wo produce that much in a week to sec a play let us admit the fact and quit entirely. Three cases of "moonblink" occurred on- the British Kteamshlp Acanthus, which reached Philadelphia tlio other tluy. After the low-lyinfr hills f rlnginp the. shores of Untavin faded from view on 'the afternoon of July 14 for 80 duys her crew of 00 officers and seamen saw no lnnd, sighted no vessel and encoun tered no storm. Among the crew are three seamen who, during the run across the. Indian ocenn, suffered terri bly from sudden blindness at night, the result of that strange disease of the eyes prevalent, in the tropics, and known to sailors as "moonblink." One bright, moonlight night, while the Acanthus whh steaming across the In dian ocean, mm of them finding his berth in the forecastle too uncomforta bly hot, went out. and lay upon the deck. The moon, wan Hearing her full ami shone almost directly overhead. When the watch was changed at. mid night lie. was awakened nnd was horri lied to find himself blind. At first the captain thought the man might be shamming to avoid going on duty, but tin investigation was made, and it was found that he could not see. although his eyes were wide open. The calamity was at once diagnosed as n case of "moonmiulc, and the. captain cau tioned his men afainst. running such risks. When day began to break sight began to return, and by sunrise he could see as well as if nothing unusual had happened. All of that day the case formed the chief topic of conver sation and when night came two more men determined to test the effect of the moon. After n two hours' nap in the full glare of the moon both men were awakened totally blind. An order from the captain prevented any further ex perimenting in that line during the rest of the voyage. MANY STILL SPEAK GAELIC. Ily ." Mcimin mi Kxtinct I.ttiiguiici in Spile of Its I'lultlon Hun-. A new appointment has been made from Wakrford t,o the chair of protes tor of Gaelic in Maynooth college, Ire land. The new appointee is a. member 3f the Gaelic league of Dublin, and was the first editor of the Arehaeolog .ml Journal, of Waterford. The opin ion is very general that Gaelic is an extinct, language, or one nearly e.v .met, and the labors of the Gaelic no ciety in New York to revive its use have lent some color to that opinion. Nevertheless, a.s figures show, the Gaelic toirgun is most tenacious, and, according to the last reports, is spoken, though not exclusively, by 1,000,000 persons in the British Isles 000,000 ir Ireland, 350,000 in Wa.les and 2L'0,000 in Scotland. Though English is the oilicial lan guage of all these countries, the pop ularity of English increases slowly de apitc the disadvantage under which those who use Gaelic labor, that of hav ing no -established grammar and no recognition in an official way. Gaelic fulfills the colloquial requirements of the farmers and fishermen in the coun ties remote from the large cities, sonie v. hat as the Basque language continues to be popular in the northern provinces of Spain. In this country Gaelic has made little headway, though many patriotic Irish men have by various methods endeav ored to acquaint others less patriotic with its advantages. While this use of most European languages has about doubled in 7" years, live times as many persons speak English as did in 1S20.
