Jere are 500 silk manufactories in the United States, capitalized at $50,000,000, and giving employment to more than 60,000 persons, including 30,000 women and girls. The first establishment of tbe si'ik business a permanence was ef fected in the city of Paterson, J., i Vi 1 K I. an cii.i'a fmmA f r 1,a Vnn?n an the American Lyons, says the Philadel phia Times. Paterson, however, has not monopolized the silk business of New Jersey, for other cities of the Cran berry state haye had a part of it, par ticularly Newark and Jersey City. New Jersey has remained at tbe head of the 'line of manufactures, with a product of $20,000,000 in the year of the last fed erai- census, New York and Pennsyl vania following with a product of $19, 000,000 each, and Connecticut coming fourth, with a product of $10,000,000. The statistics just at hand for the year 1895 show on the part of Pennsylvania a marked increase in this manufacture since the ' national : census of . 1890. ' While the number of establishments has not been increased, their output has 'been enlarged 25 per cent., tbe most notable increase being in the production of ribbons, which was more' than doubled, the .output , ill 1895 being 35, 000,000 yards. Tbe number of spindles juucnecu uuuug Lii cj jicai u pel v-cu l. In 1895 the number of employes was 13.815. an increase . of 4485 over the number in 1890. Tbe wages paid in 1895 were $4,082,292, as compared with $2,725,285 in 1890. At this rate of in crease it cannot be long before Pennsyl vania will exceed New Jersey in the amount of the annual product of silk. eastern Pennsylvania, in which a n-aioritv of the silk manufactories are , situated, has many . geographical . ad vantages. Unlike Western ' Pennsvl- . vania. except in the anthracite reeion it does not produce coal, oil or iron ore, Much of the land is rocky, some of it sterile,, and it is not held at high prices Wood any building materials are cheap, there is water power in plenty. The railroad connections of Eastern Pennsyl vania are excellent, tne anthracite coal . lines passing through much . territory which is not productive in agriculture or otherwise. Recently the extreme north eastern section of Pennsylvania has been utilized for trie construction of silk factories. This can be done'with ad vantage now, because the eligible towns of New Jersey are somewhat overcrowded n II t.ri fn.lMncp ailk- narb-of- a rwl tha. nnet of eligible land increased abnormally in cities adjacent to New "York. Along with this increase of land has been the corresponding increase in 'rente. The largest market for American silfcs is in the cities of the East, and one of tbe first of these is the city of Philadelphia. Aa Pennsylvania takes much of the pro- ""duct of American silk manufactories, there seems nothing unnatural in Penn sylvania in supplying most of the m a n (1 t hnt it. will- ho o ont-ni-iuo a persons to know that the Keystone state is now nearly at the head of the etates of the country in the manufacture of silk. - - - .. . :, J.ne value o raw silk imported into the Untied Statesfrom France, Italy and China chiefly last year was $22,- OUO.UUO.
