The Dalles Daily Chronicle. The only Republican, Daily Newspnpei n Wasco County. WEDNESDAY. DEC. 23. 1896 EASTERN OFFICE 230 to 9U Temple Court, N. Y. City. E. KATZ, Agent. THE INDIAN HORROR. .It is somewhat surprising that with anjQuaS of sympathy wc Ameri cans are manifesting for the Cubans that we get up so little for the starr ing millions of India. The condition of that unhappy people is simply in describable, and the vast horde of sufferers makes all attempts at re lieving them seem futile. There are "millions of them now on the verge of starvation, and according to re ports, they will have nothing to sus tain life until another crop is grown, -which will be six months. Aheady in places the living are feeding on the dead, cases being reported of mothers cooking and eating their children. Humanity stands appalled at the terrible calamity that has be fallen this unfortunate people, and yet no organized effort is being made to afford them any relief. The contemplation of their most unhappy condition may well give us ungrateful ones cause for de Tout thankfulness that we have been spared such an experience, and cause at least a fleeting expression of grate fulness to Him who sends us rain and sucshine and plenty. Christmas, the time of "good will to men," finds all of us, with food and clothing, at least. Not much to be grateful for, we think, but surely when we measure our condition, not by the few who are more happily situated, but by the many who are a thousand times worse off, there is abundant reason for being satisfied with our lot. THE CUBAN SITUATION. The Cameron resolution in the senate has gone over the holidays, which means it has gone up. The sentiment of the people of the United States towards Cuba and Spain has not changed, they feel just as much sympathy for the one, and just as much detestation for the conduct of the other as they ever did, but that the Cameron resolution, which was in effect that the United States pro ceed to fire the Spaniards out of Cuba, was ever intended seriously, is doubtful. It appears like a bit of jingoism on the part of Pennsjiva nia's aged senator, and the readily yielded consent of Senator Cameron to the resolution being postponed until after the holidays, shows that he isn't half as anxious to see it pass as he pretends to be. Secretary Olney knows what he is talking about, and his words of wisdom were as oil on the troubled waters of the senate. The whole matter seems to have resolved itself into this: This gov ernment cannot recognize Cuba un til the latter form some kind of a .government; and second, that we cannot interfere between Spain and her subjects unless by her barbarity she compel us to simply put a stop to the massacre of non combatants. Cuba could, we believe, get anto noiny, and have a local government if she were satisfied with that; but so far she has not asked the good offices of the United States, but seems de termined to have .all or nothing, This being the case, she must work out her own salvation. LAND VAL UES. The East Oregcniatf insists that the juries in the .Taffe and Seufert cases should measure the damages those gentlemen may recover by the amount ot property created by in dustry and thrift that is destroyed. The editor of that excellent journal lias some very peculiar views,. at least they seem so to us, with regard tp property. If damages were meas ured according to his views, there would be none recoverable for the taking of the land, since that is pro vided by Nature. " The ownership of land is the line of demarcation between savagery and civilization. It mighf be better to go back to primitive ways, to tribal relations, to pastoral pursuits and conditions, but civilized iran will not do it. He prefers the rush and roar of enterprise and , business to the peaceful pursuits of nomadic life. As long as this is true and we live on the earth instead of in Utopia, the ownership of land and privileges will continue, and men and will value them. juriesJ We will agree with the East Ore gonian that many things might be changed for the betterment of the world, among them changes in modes of taxation ; but we can see no other way of dealing with property than as it is now looked upon. It is pleasing to know that foreign countries, even Spain, are acquaint ed with ' and understand our little national characteristics and realize that our senators and congressmen, being placed on high pedestals, nat urally pose for the admiration of their constituents. They realize that we are great admirers of the picturesque in politics, and therefore are gratified by taking a peep at our selves in the mirror of our own good opinion. Senor Canovas says, "The United States is al right," and then he looks pleasant. - Ralston Koffy, Pan Kake Flour, Grano and Breakfast Food, AT MAIER & BENTON The Dalles.
