Caged Like a tteast.
Bound to iron rings anchored to the
walls, and caged like a wild beast, Grace
Solomon, the daughter of a wealthy
pawn-broker of Denver, has raved for
seven months, in a condition and under
surroundings the moat terrible, says a
Denver correspondent of the St. Louis
Globe-Democrat. When Secretary
Whitehead, of the Humane Society,
visited the store at 165 Larimer street,
he was conducted upstairs and found
the young girl in a 16-foot ring, utterly
nnde. under the care of a young man.
No effort was made to shield - her from
view. She was for a time under the
care of her mother, reported partly de
mented, who declined to attend to her
most simple wants, and the result is
that the girl's nails have grown to such
a length that they are used as weapons
of defense. The filth of the place beg
garded description.
Her condition is the result of investi
gation ot spiritualism, it being charged
that her mind was affected by "demon
strations" of Jules Wallace, who has
been exposed 'in various parts of the
country. She was 'taken to the little
room, and when she became violent was
chained to the wall, where her condition
became worse, and where the most
common wants of humankind were de
nied her.
What to do with her is a question, for
the insane asylum is overcrowded. J.
Solomon, her fattier, is one of the
wealthiest men of the West, an old-time
pawn-broker, who counts his cash by the
thousands. The case is the most terri
ble and revolting ever brought to the at
tention of the authorities.
The St. Louis Globe-Democrat semi
weekly Tuesday and Friday eight
pages each issue sixteen pages every
week only one dollar a year, is un
questionably the biggest, best and
cheapest national news journal pub
lished in the United States. Strictly
Republican in politics, it still gives all
the news, and gives it at least three
days earlier than it can be had from any
weekly paper published anywhere. It
is indispensable to the farmer, merchant
or professional man who desires to keep
promptly and thoroughly posted, but
has not the time to read a large daily
paper; while its great variety of well
selected reading matter makes it in
valuable as a home and family paper.
Remember the price, only one' dollar a
year. Sample copies free.

BEWARE OF SOFT-SHELL CRABS.
Peculiar Parts to Bo tfogarded by Those
1 Who Eat Them.
"There is no danger in eating' soft
shelled crabs," Observed an epicure, "if
they are fresh, but they are .o"::on "if
they are not They should be .t'.l sea
soned, and an extra lot cf jwr.cr put
on them as a precaution, cSpcd-lly if
the weather is very hot when they arc
eaten, or if they are eaten shortly be
fore one retires. It is the habit of many
persons to eat softshelled craibs at
nig-ht time. I do not know but that they
taste better then. It is somciwnat dan
gerous to many to drink milk after eat
ing1 crabs. Milk seems to develop the
colic that follows eating soft-shelled
crabs with some persons. '
"Another thing that ehou-ld be re
membered, and thai, is that a sharp
thuuderstorm will kill soft-shcllcld
crabs, and even the hard-shelled crabs
at times. Unless the soft-shelled crab
had been cooked before the thunder
storm, I think the safer plan would be
K decline to eat it. Under all other
conditions there is no dan per in partak
ing of them, for I do not think anyone
would be criminal enough to cook a
dead crab, hard or soft shell. The
proper way to kill a crab is to threw
him into a kettle of boiling water. I
know that some people think this is
cruel, but it is no more cruel than to
stab them with a needle or kill them
with chloroform, as I have known some
extra sensitive persons to do."
Old Shoes for Doormats.
A use has been found for old shoes, a
derelict product that has heretofore de
fied the efforts of that class of claimants
who view with despair the absolute loss
of anything, says the New York Jour
nal. The leather is cut into little disks
of various shapes. These are set on
edge and held together with long wire
staples, and the result is an odd looking
but flexible and serviceable door mat,
which seems to do the work excellent
ly of live wire and steel mats that are
in such general use in outer halls. The
leather scrap mat is very cheap, and will

With tha close of the Presidential Campaign THE TRIBUNE recognizes the
fact that the American people are now anxious to give their attention to home and

prominence, until another State or National occasion demands a renewal of the
fight for the principles for which THE TRIBUNE has labored from its inception
to the present day, and won its greatest victories.
Every poHsible effort will be' pal forth, and money freely spent, to make THE
