Mr. Cox and familv went to Arlington

near that place.
Mr. Edward Synnott, after a two days
visit here, returned to his home in
Wasco last night.

Clever Katie Putnam.
Bright, clever Katie Pnlnam and her
excellent company, who are now de
lighting large audiences at the Marqnam
Grand. Portland, will pay, us a visit
Wednesday, Dec. 16. And what a feast
of comedy our pleasure-bent audience
may expect. Brisk, bright comedy ruDS
through all of Mies Putnam's plays and
the delightful production, "Love Finds
a Way," that she will present here, is
said to be brim full of the choicest oi
dramatic good things.
The plot has sufficient sensation to
make it intensely entertaining, and the
scenic effects are said to be very attract
ive.
Seats are now on sale at Snipes-Kin-
ersly Drug Co.'e.
' WORDS BORN IN NEW YORK.
"Porterhouse" Originated In Barling: Slip
r. Boss" front the Dutch.
New York city is the birthplace of
several expressions th:i.t liave baen for
fflarj- years ourrent all over the world.
These expressions are not the outcomo
of scholarly thought and culture. Al
though our professional men hnve du
tifully and generous!' aided in the cir
culation and ennoblement of neolo
pisms foreign born, the apt yet tin
studied offering's of the untutored
workman have held their own in lit
erature as well as in everyday speech,
while many labored results of learned
mind workers and'would-be mind mas
ters of words have lived but long
enough to be named.
The word "boss," which came into
common use during- the. regime of Wi 1-
liam M.Tweed, is a Dutch baas master.
In the language to which it belongs
it is much used in composition. Thus.
timmerman baas is a master carpen
ter, and a preacher is in Dutch, merely
a church boss.
I Only a few years ago attention beran
to be called to the prevalence of the va
rious forms of vice in what was then
cons'deced the choicest residential part
of the city. A newspaper reporter
named the region the "Tenderloin dis
trict," and as such it is destined to be
known for a long time to come, while
the name tenderloin will do duty sin
gularly m-other towns as they grow
more like the city in their notable char
acteristics. - ;
Porter is the name given in London
more than a century ago to a very dark
and heavy beer much fancied by porters
and other outdoor workmen. The word
and the thing came to New York in due
.time, and porter was soon in demand a?
a beverage among the w.harfmen, truck
men and 'longshoremen engaged on the
river fronts on the east and west sides
cf the city. One taverner in Burling
flip became famous for the porter he
sold and his place gradually gained the
distinction of being th-e porter housi
of the town. In course of time he added
all the facilities of a hotel to his "pub
lic" and increased its reputation by fur
nishing his customers a steak such as
they could get--nowhere else. - They
called it the "porterhouse steak," and
by that name a particulnrly choice cut
of the steak part- of a steer is known
everywhere. Harper's Weekly. ,
TO BUY THE POPE A CITY.
Constantinople, Mors Than Borne, la
Likely to JJo Purchased. -
It is suggested that the Roman Catho
lics of Christendom shall subscribe $1,
000,0iO,OPO to buy Eomc and m near-liy
seaport for the pope, says -. Lcrpei s
Weekly. The belief is cxi?rcBcd chat
the Italian government might cc'it the
property without serious detriment to
its political integrity and that the
money could be used to greatadvantage
in relieving Italy of parr of the burden
of her public debt. It is not proposed
to turn over the principal to the venders,
but to pl:ic3 it In trust and to pay ils
annual proceeds into the Italian treas
ury as lf"ng as the pope remains undis
turbed in the papal territory. .
The plan is a very pretty one and
there are those who think the, money
might be raised and that King Item-;
bert's 'government would appreciate
the advantages of such a bargain- Hut
would Rome be the best purchase the
pope could mike with the .money?
Chicago would take him vastly cheaper
and give him port privileges on Lake
Michigan, but she could not engage to
make him monarch of an American tt.vr-
ship at any price. But there is Con
stantinople, an excellent city, wline
popes have lived before, full of ready
made churches built by Christians and
nearlr- ripe now for reconsecraiion.
Constantinople seems liable to come
into the market any day. If the pope
could buy it of the sultan tliat would be
a deal worth subscribing to and worth
turning a page of history to record.

to the present day, and won its greatest victories.
Every possible effort will be pal forth, and money freely spent, to make THE
