Republican National Headquarters,
Chicago. The earnest support which
the loyal citizens of the United States,
irrespective of former political affilia
tions, have - rendered the - Republican
party and the cause of sound money in
the campaign abont to end, justifies an
expression from those who have been
called upon to conduct it. No campaign
since the war of th,e rebellion baa pre
sented such - grave responsibilities , to
those entitled to the elective franchise.
The dangerous principles enunciated by
the Chicago platform, which' proposes
not only a debasement of the currency,
but the destruction of the highest ju
dicial authority of tbe land, have justi
fied good citizens, irrespective of past
party preferences, in uniting to rebuke
those who would thus endanger the very
foundation of our national organization.
Tbe developments of the closing week
of the campaign leave no doubt that the
judgment of an overwhelming majority
of the people is against the platform and
candidate of repudiation and national
dishonor. ' It now remains for the voters
to register at the polls their answer to
attempts - to excite passion, prejudice
and selfishness for the benefit of a few
who are willing to destroy national
honor and endanger national existence
for their personal ambitions and indi
vidual profit.
- I am confident the strength of McKin
ley and Hobart in the electoral college
as a result of next Tuesday's election
will not be less than 311 votes. This es
timate is made upon figures just re
ceived from the chairman of state com
mittees, the result of final polls taken in
such a careful manner as to give them
the highist credence. These polls indi
cate that the vote bv states will be as
follows : .

day. -. .
It is : hoped, therefore, that - all good
citizens will join-bands on Tuesday in
maintaining tbe honor of the nation by
registering their ballots in favor of that
candidate who has been honored by the
support of .loyal men of all parties
William McKinley.
Tbt isene is between two men and two
platforms, the one representing national
honor, good government, sound money,
and sound principle; tbe other standing
for doctrines dangerous to tbe peace and
and prosperity of the nation, and prom
ising only a system which must debase
the currency, destroy business and em
ployment. . It is, as has been ' recently
said by Major McKinley himself, "a
time when the voice of the partisan is
hushed in the chorus of patriotism which
sounds from one end of the country
the other.
Let every loval citizen take' this
thought to the polls with him on election
day, and tbe country will be saved from
the danger 'which confronts it, and saved
by that same loyal devotion which oblit
erated party lines in defense of the na
tionon the occasion of equal but not
greater peril. M. A. Hanna.
Confiscation of Property.
A farmer who had his crop of wheat
stored in his granary or a manufacturer
who had his warehouse filled with the
products of hia factory would think it
an outrage if the government should in
sist npon confiscating one-half of his
wheat or his goods. What better is it
by the adoption of free silver coinage to
confiscate one-half of the wage of the
laborer or one-half of hia accumulated
savings, or one-half of the dower of the
widow, or one-half of the pension of the
soldier? Philadelphia Record.

Good citizens in evr'y section and of
every party have united in publicly ex
pressing themselves upon this subject.
Their duty now is to do so in such a
manner as will forever put to an' end
further attempts in this line. There is
but one way of doing this, and that is at
the polls. While each man has his es
pecial field in the preliminary work of
the campaign, the duty of election day
is common to all. No man, however
much he has done in influencing others,
can neglect his personal duty at tbe
polls, and no citizen, however humble
- or devoted to employment or business,
should fail to exercise his privilege and
duty on election day. .. 'p
It . is " not merely a privilege, but a
duty. And, while it is the duty of every
good citizen to express his will at the
polls on, all occasions, that "duty was
never more serious or important than
now. ' Sound arguments and expressions
of loyalty connt for nothing unless those
who offer them or are ' convinced by
them exercise that universal privilege of
Restore the Zero Freezing; Point.
In the haste in which, the Democrats
at Chicago prepared their platform they
forgot to include the plank declaring in
favor of restoring the natural freezing
point of zero. Mankind has suffered and
shivered tremendously because of this in
human standard of temperature adopted
undoubtedly at the instigation of coal
barons" and quack doctors. Without
waiting for the aid or consent of any
other nation let us proceed to lower the
freezing point and to reform our climate
in the interests of the masses.
Want the Beat Too la.
The farmer and the mechanic must
be free to use the very best tools and
implements, and tbe merchant and
banker must be frea to use the very best
money and instruments of credit. An
honest and stable measure of value is
just as necessary to both as are honest
and stable measures of weights and
quantities, and it requires no argument
to show that without these it would be
impossible to transact the ordinary busr
ness of the country. Hon. John G.
Carlisle. -.
Cnba't Disconrasrina; Experiment.
Cuba is furnishing a nearby example
of -the beauties of government regulation
of the value .of money on the Bryan
plan. . Captain General Weyler bad a
deficient supply of cash, and so he had
the Banco Espanol put out a lot of pa
per money and issued a stringent edict
that everybody should take it at par
with gold. As the island is practically
under martial law, here was govern
ment control of the currency at its best
If you didn't take the bank bills at par,
you were liable to be shot. Even Bryan
couldn't do more for silver than that.
But did the edict keep' the bank notes at
par? Not for a day. Almost instantly
they were at a discount, which ' soon
amounted to 20 per cent Even with
guns and bayonets you cannot make 80
centyj equal a dollar. Weyler has had to
give, up trying. 'He has finally allowed
the Havana Stock Exchange. to quote tbe
value of the bank bills in gold. We
were going to say that this proves the
powerlessness of law to establish the
value of money, but we remember in
time that Cuba has less than 2,000,000
population to our 70,000,000; that she
never put down the greatest rebellion of
modern times ; that her inhabitants are
not the richest, proudest, most intelli
gent people on earth, and so we are not
bo sure. Her case is only a part of uni
versal experience, but we have changed
