Mr. and Mrs. Biggs returned last evening from Wasco, Sherman county, where they attended the nuptials of Mr. Guv Andrews and Miss Ida Tozier. Safe for McKinley. Discussing the situation as it exists today in -Oregon, Mr. Sol Hir?ch, chair man of. the Republican state central committee, says: "I consider Oregon won for McKinley. It is entirely out of the doubtful list of states and placed in the McKinley col umn. My advices from all parts of the state make it certain that the electoral vote of Oregon will be given to the Re publican presidential candidate, all ru mors to the contrary notwithstanding. "Tlie reports in circulation that we have given up Oregon are absurd. The Bryan people started the same rumor on Mr. Hanna, chairman of the national committee, some time ago. It is a con certed plan on their part grasping at the last straw. I never felt so confident of carrying the state as I do now. The work of our committee extends all over tbe state. "There need be no fear as to tbe result in Oregon, and absurd reports started by the Bryan people will have no effect upon the great mass of people." Advertised Letters. Lines in memory of Muriel Husbands, who departed this life Friday, Sept. 25, 1896, at Mosier, Oregon. - Once more death has called us to mourn over an angel of God. Little Muriel, the pride and jewel of the house hold, has been called to heaven to claim her reward. Shall we weep for her de parted spirit? No, we shall not weep, The angel of death came and little Muriel was welcomed into heaven, where her Heavenly Father was waiting to welcome her. It would be cruel to call her hack to this wicked world to grieve over sorrow and trouble, while she is eweetly resting in Jesus. God knows best. Sheas pure and spotleBS as snow, is numbered among the angels, sweetly resting in the arms of her Savior. . With saddened hearts we gathered 'Round the form of one so fair; An angel of God that was taken from earth To dwell in heaven so fair. - With sorrowing hearts we laid ter to rest Parents and friends most dear. We bid her farewell, her spotless form; An angel who had taken its flig ot. Call not bock the departed, Tbe treasure and chief most dear. . In heaven she's waiting to greet again, The friends she has leH here. In heaven she's sweetly resting, With angelB bright and fair. Her crown is a crown of whiteness; In her hand a harp of gold. He took it in two doses one on one evening1 and' the other the next. The senator sauntered up to the Bohemian club the other day and saw two or three of the younger members at tempting1 a neiw feat, ami he watched them with interest. One of them, say:-' the San Francisco News Letter, stuck a funnel inthetopof histrousers, threw his head back, placed a 50-cent piece on his. forehead and tried to drop it in thv? funnel 'by slowly lowering his head. After all liad failed Jerry insisted on- trying1 it, though all ihad tried to dissuade him from attempting a feat too difficult for them. The funnel was placed in the wriistbaiul of his t.rouecrs and. he threw back hir. head to receive the coin on his expansive brow; At that juncture a 'pitcher of ice water was crept led into the fucnel, ami by t he time Jerry pot throug-h diviK'tiiK thi jokers trad vanished. The senator's temper improved with dry raimtnt and the next niffht at.the club he started in to shor,v a couple of friends tVc funnel trick. "It's this way," lie explained, "you put the funnel in the top of your panta loons, so. then throw your head back. so, ar:d wow! Again Jerry was forced to Change his raiment, and he is not showing people what he knows about the funnel trick. HARD ON CATS. A French Government Commissioner Cen sures the Conduct of Official Cats. The French government has just had occasion to appoint a commission to iaquire into the grievances of the e-:ts in its employ. Their report in :Tn sniub ing txhibition cf official stupidity, and will rouse a righteous icdifrnation in the bosom of all friends of the ust-'ul motiser. It appears that-cats are kept in some of the French military magazines to keep down the surplus population of rats and mice. Their food is regulated by ministerial decree according to cir-cumstaiic-es, aird at present there is a regulation in force authorizing an ex penditure of 2y2 centimes per cat per diem. But this does not-seeui cnoigli, as the unfortunate governmental c:tts have grown, extremely thin, so at last the ministry appointed specialists to inquire into tbematter. These have gravely reported that '"the cats of the army are very slow to accustom them selves to the diet prescribed by the gov ernment circular. Thus they seldom eat bread, and never lap up greasy wa ter unless actually driven, thereto ly pangs of hunger, fo that they are d.vir.g off or else abandoning the mi lit.iry mag azines." And as to the tendency of the growth of great cities to enervate nations, there is no proof of it at all, unless vc identi fy the life of great ciities with the as sion for idleness and pleasure nn'J self indulgence which sometimes, but by no means universally, accompanies their ' growth, says the London Spec tator. When yon get a large proletari at, living, as that, of ancient Kome and possibly of Nineveh and Baby leu did, on the. alms of the rich and powerful, then no doubt you have the conditions of a thoroughly tmnatual and unhealthy life, end no one can wonder at tbe rapid decay of such cities and of the nations whioh - gloried in them. But where the honest working class far out number the proletariat, where the middle classes of distributors nnd man ufacturers ard professional mori ore la borious and energetic, and even ,1he class that lives on its accumulaied wealth contains fl considerable sprink ling of sericua and disinterested work ers, wc do not believe that there is the smallest evidence of any greater danger in the life of the agricultural village or the pastoral tribe. Indeed, we should regard Olive Schrciner's picture of the life of the modern. Boers as indicating a condition of things more prolific of morbid elements, with its almost com plete absence of any stirring or active intelligence, that any kind of modern life that is honestly laborious at all. The Boer life is too sleepy, too desti tute of stirring thought or effort, to be altogether natural. It needs at least the old element of danger and neces sary vigilance to render it even bracing.
