As . a last resort, I was induced to try Ayer's !arsaiari!la, and, after tak ing a 11 umber ot bottles, the sore bepran to disappear and my pceneral health improve, I persisted in this treatment, until the sore Avas en tirely healed. Since then, I use Ayer's SarsapariU.-i rcasioiially as a tonic and blood-purifier, and, in deed, it seems as though I could not keep house without it." Mrs. S. A. Fikj.d.s Bloomfield, la. Reception to Rev. Sktggi. Tbe members of the Christian church planned a very clever surprise for their new pastor, Rev. A. D. Skaggs, and family, at their church last' evening, Arrangements had been made whereby the pastor's family were to visit at the borne of Geo. Miller on Eighth and Court streets, thus making it necessary for them to pass by the Christian cbnrcb in so doing. On reaching tbe church, how ever, the lights were suddenly turned on, arousing the curiosity of Pastor Skaggs, who, on entering the building, was not a little surprised to discover the cburch full of people, when the fact at once dawned upon him tbat the congre gation had "put up a job on him." As soon as the pastor and family had recovered their senses, a short program was rendered, which was highly appre ciated by all. The exercises were open ed with a beautiful vocal duet by the Misses Myrtle and . Retta Stone, fol lowed by a solo from Miss Edna Rar- AVER'-S riett. -Mr. George Ernest Stewart was called for and recited "Katie Lee and Willie Gray" in his usual clever man ner. ' He was also requested to give his mirth-provoking reading, entitled "Mrs. Byrde and the Masons," which was highly appreciated .by tbe audience. The church choir then rendered a vocal selection, and Rev. Skaggs closed the program with a few well-chosen remarks, after which refreshments were an nounced in the basement of the church, whither the audience retired to enjoy a bountiful luncheon and to indulge in pleasant social intercourse, which con tinued lor something over an hour. Ev eryone seemed to ' be of the opinion that it was an evening well spent, and high ly testimonial of tbe esteem in which Rev. Skaggs and family are held by the citizens of Tbe Dalles. Freucn Louis' Fate. Last monday the startling intelligence was brought to Canyon, says the News, that the lifeless body of Louis Adams, or "French Louis," had been discovered on his ranch in Silvies valley, just across the line in Harney county. Sunday about noon the bovs of tbe Pacific Live stock Co. were riding after cattle, when they saw the Frenchman's team tied to the fence with the harness on, and a broken double-tree still attached to tbe harness. Further search acroBS the meadow revealed the man's lifeless body, with his neck broken. It was thought tbat his team ran away with the wagon and that he was killed by being thrown off as they crossed the irrigating ditch. Louis quit herding sheep gome years ago, and with xhe money that he had ac cumulated by industry and thrift he purchased the tract of land on Silvies river known as the "Baccaroo ranch." Louis lived on bis featile acres and made his home there until tbe time of his death. French Louis was a peculiar character while be lived. He was kind to those around him, and was never known to oppress the poor. In all kindness to his memory, tbe News re lates tbat in life be loved the flowing bowl, and tells the following incident: On one occasion, Louis was -giving an exhibition of fire-eating. He bad a saucer full of brandy to which he had touched a match, and it was blazing im mensely while he partook of the blazes by tbe. spoonful, when some fellow poured kerosene into the saucer while the fire wizard was looking in another direction, and the next spoonful burned his mouth and broke up the show. This was merely an incident in the life of the poor fellow, but it points to his socia bility in this life. Program for the Last Concert. The party who ordered it became involved in finan cial difficulties and was unable to pur chase it. We then transferred it to Mr. I. C. Manufact urera of other earsaparillas sought by every means to obtain a showing of their goods, but they were all turned away under tbe application of the rule for bidding the entry of patent medicines and nostrums.
