Made Unanimous.
Isdiasapolis, Sept. 3. The newly or
ganized goM-standard or national Dem
ocratic party of tbe United ' States today
nominated Senator John M. Palmer, of
Illinois, to carry tbe standard as ita
nominee for the office of president.
Senator Palmer was nominated upon
the first ballot, receiving 7575a votes ont
of a total of 9S3. He was then declared
the nominee of the convention by accla
mation. When the roll call of the states was
made for nominations for president, all
names were withdrawn except those of
General Bragg, of Wieuonein, and Sena
tor Palmer, of Illinois. ''
Tt,was conceded that Palmer would be
nominated and an attempt was made to
have this done by acclamation, bat the
motion was declared out of order and a
vote was ordered. .
As soon as the result was announced.
General Bragg. lept upon a chair and led
tbe wild cheers for Palmer which lasted
for several minutes. When the demon
stration bad partially subsided, General
Bragg made a motion to the effect that
Senator Palmer be declared tbe nominee
by acclamation, which was carried with
a whoop.
. Tbe roll call of states was then ordered
for nominations for vice-president
Browder, of Kentucky, took the platform
and presented the - name of General
Buckner. A wild demonstration fol
lowed, at the close of which General
Buckner was nominated by acclamation

htw Orleans Merchant to Fit Oat an
Expedition..
Chicago, Sept. 3. Captain D. C. Dur-
gin, of New Orleans, has been in the city
a week attempting to purchase a boat of
from 200 to 300 tonnage, which he can
transport to New Orleans either via the
Illinois river or the St. Lawrence, and
which is to be used in filibustering for
the benefit of the Cuban patriots.
Captain Durgin has unlimited means
at his disposal, furnished him by New
Orleans merchants and capitalists who
believe in the- cause of Cuba. His in
structions are to purchase .in Northern
waters a boat which will stand the swift
currents of the Lower Mississippi and
the Gulf of Mexico. He expected to find
a boat of this character at Paducah, but
it had been sold before be reached there.
He went over the docks of St. Louis and
could not find what he wanted.
Speaking of the Cuban cause, Captain
Durgin said : ' - -

and whatever can be done there for

Opening of the Republican Campaign In
Iowa.
Pes Moisjes, bept. 3. The state cam
paign was opened here this afternoon
with a speech by Senator Allison, the
audience filling a large tent holding be
tween 5000 and 6000 people. The city is
filled with visitors. Senator Allison
spoke for two hours, and his remarks
were frequently applauded. He devoted
almost tbe entire time to a discussion of
the money question. He pictured the
condition which ' be said the country
would be in under the free coinage of
silver, claiming that financial revolu
tion would be of proportions not dreamed
of, even by the supporters of free silver

Wheat has not yet fairly commenced
to move. The Diamond Flour Mills pay
42c for first grade today. . ,, " -
The bay market is not very well sup
plied, though an unusually good yield is
reported throughout the country. The
fact is good baled wheat bay is scarce,
and sella readilv for $8 to $9 per ton.
Loose bay $7.
Butter A better supply is coming in
of late: 40c to 45c is paid for first-class.
Tomatoes A better grade . is noticed
this season than for many years. There
is less blighted fruit; 20 cents is the aV-
erage paid for ordinary offers.
String beans Continue plentiful at 2c.

Peaches The supply is scarce and
price holds firm at 50c. - '
Watermelons and - cantelou pes Both
are plentiful. Watermelons sell poorly
for 75c per dozen ; canteloupes 50c per
