A PAUAGE BOMBARDED
British Fleet Opens Fire on
Zanzibar.
THE USURPER FORCED TO FLEE
Ills Stronghold Wrecked and Many Per
sons Killed--English Admiral
Now Holds the Town.
Zanzibar, Aug. 27. Tbe palace of the
sultan of Zanzibar was "bombarded tbia
morning, and at noon was a mass of
blazing ruins. Tiie usurping chieftain,
Seyyid Khalid, and tbe commander of
bia forces. Seyyid Sales, escaped to tbe
German consulate, where - they ' remain
under the protection of the German flag.
By 8 a. m. today over a hundred Brit
ish subjects and some other foreigners
had embarked on the warships, the
Italians going on board the Italian gun
boat Volturno and the Germans seeking
safety at German consulate. . A naval
officer was sent to the palace square with
another message for Seyyid Khalid, ask
ing bim if be was prepared to surrender,
and again notifying him that the palace
would be shelled at 9 o'clock promptly
if he failed to haul down the flag. Sey
yid replied that he would - die sooner
than snrrender. His answer was con
veyed to Admiral Raw son.
At 9 o'clock the flagship signaled the
Raccoon, Thrush and Sparrow to com
mence firing. A moment later the
cruiser and two gun boats opened fire
with their heaviest guns. Ten minutes
later they had sent a storm of shell and
shot into the palace, tearing big gaps in
it, scattering death and confusion among
its defenders, while dismounting -some
guns aehore and patting to flight the
gunners handling the pieces. The fire
of the warships was admirably directed.
Smoke was soon seen issuing from sev
eral parts of tbe palace.
During this time the St. George and
the Philoiuene were held in reserve, al
though they occasionally plumped a shot
into the enemy's camp, adding to the
dismay of its, defenders. The Racoon,
Thrush and Sparrow kept up the bom
bardment until 9:50, when the palace
was tumbling in ruins and large rents
had been made in the barricade of the
sultan's followers, who answered tbe
fire of the warships with persistency and
gallantry, and did not stop firing until
in response to flagship's signal of "cease
firing," the guns of the warships stopped
showering shot and shell ashore.
Tbe losses of tbe enemy are not known,
but must have been heavy, especially
among the defenders of the palace proper.
During the bombardment the sultan's
armed steamer Glasgow opened fire on
tbe British warships. A few well-aimed
shells from the heavy guns of the Rac
coon and a shot or two from the four
inch guns of the Sparrow crushed
through and through her, silencing her
fire in short order. Ultimately she sank
at her moorings. Soon after the palace
caught fire and the walls and roof were
sent flying here and there by shells.
Seyyid Khalid and Seyyid Sales, com
mander of the asurpfng sultan's army
escaped with some of their followers
through the back part of the palace, and.
hurried to the German consulate, where
protection was accorded them. The
usurper fled inland.
A. Story of Stage Life.
New York, Aug. 27. Among the merry-hearted
soubrette swbo amused the
public at one of the Coney Island resorts
yesterday was Mrs. Millie AzeVedo.
Just before she went on the stage she re
ceived a telegram from the Spanish con
sul in New York, announcing with . of
ficial brevity that her husband, Ray
mond Azevedo, bad been shot and killed
in Cuba, ' but when ' and where and
whether by revolutionists or royal troops'
the dispatch did not state.
Mrs. Azevedo said her husband was a
mine operator, 37, years old. He was a
Cuban, but when she met him in -San
Francisco a year and a half ago be bad
been in business there for several
months. She was living in the same
city with her parents, her maiden name
being Heim. After a courtship of two
months they were married. Business
called Mr. Azevedo East, and his wife
came with him. In November be was

summoned to tbe Azores. He left his
wife well provided for, and said be would
return in less than four months. Since
then Mrs. Azevedo said she had received
no word from bim. Her funds giving
out and having a good voice, she went on
the stage to support herself.
IXSVltGENT SOLBIURS AT HOME.
Americans in Cuban's Service Ke-lsit.
Their Native Land. ...
St. L'ouis, Aug. 27. T. Rosser Roemer,
one-time captain of the old Busch
Zouaves of this city, and Frank Hilligas,
also of St. Louis, who entered tbe Cuban
service last November, have, returned.
They are in this country now for the
purpose of securing arms for the insur
gent army, and brought letters to this
effect from General Gomez to Delegate
Palma, at New York. "Rosa" Roemer,
as he was familiarly called, comes home
with a commission as lieutenant-colonel
of infantry and Hilligass with that of a
lieutenant.
Colonel Roemer tells a story lull of ad
venture, ending with a thrilling esca
pade from tbe Spanish who encircled
the coast of Cuba, a desperate voyage of
200 miles on the open sea in a 16-foot
boat, finally landing at Nassau, in tbe
Bahama lelands, whence they went to
New York on the Ward line steamer
Santiago. From a solid weight of 215
pounds, Roemer baa fallen to less than
150 pounds as the result of Cuban chills
and fever.
"We started from Remadios,in Puerto
Principe," said Colonel Roemer, "under
the escort of Colonel Medabal, the noted
bandit, and tbe Phil Sheridan of tbe
Cuban cause, but were forced bacjc to
the Maiasa mountains, wherein is lo
cated tbe headquarters of - the Cuban
civil government. There we obtained
letters entitling us to travel with some
Americans to the Central states, end
finally reached the coast and escaped in
a small boat, in company with Goereno,
correspondent of a New York morning
paper, and, afte many privatious, liv
ing on cocoanuts and bananas, we'
finally reached Nassau, where we were
quarantined for three days, and from
Nassau went by steamer to New York.
"The Cubans are sure to win. The
Spanish army has retreated into Puerto
Principe, and their commander has noti
fied General Weyler that he will not
again engage Gomez without a reinforce
ment of 5,000 men. Gomez has abso
lute control of all Cuba outside tbe
cities, and at the beginning of the dry
season will march toward Havana, at the
same time that General Maceo crosses
the trocha, and joining forces, tbe two
will either drive the Spanish into the
sea or so badly cripple them that further
prosecution of the war will be impos
sible, "The total strength of the rebel army
at present is 60,000; that of tbe Spanish
army 190,000, to be reinforced by 40,000
more already embarked from Spain.
The Cuban soldiers are scattered every
where, but by a. thorough system .of
communication they can be massed to
gether in an incredibly short time.
"I shall te glad to return to Cuba,
and l am likely to be ordered there by a
junta at any moment.- Delegate Palma,
in New York, is posted as to my move
ments here, so that he will always know
exactly where to reach me." ,
; ft will be remembered that nearly a
year ago Roemer euJdenly. disappeared
from this city and w as not beard of for
some time, when he wrote a letter to a
triend here in which he stated that he
had joined the Cubans in their struggle
for liberty. ' .
