The following pertinent questions
and answers are from the Dry Goods
Economist: ,
' HILVER AS8EI1TION:
"xOii. contracted the currency by
discontinuing the coinage ' of silver
dollars on private account in 1873."
TUB FACT IN THE CASE:
The :total currency of the. United
.States in 1865 was $714,702,995. In
1875, two years after the discontinu
ance of the coinage of silver, it had
increased to 754,101,947, and it has
continued to increase until the total
money in circulation in this country
in 1895 was $1,601,968,473. .
81XVEB AB9EKTIOS:
"You have demonetized silver and
destroyed the dollar of our fathers."
"THE FACT JN THE CABE:
All the silver dollars coined in this
country from the Revolution till 1873
numbered 8,045,838. Much of this
time even the.-e did not circulate,
being worth as bullion more than a
gold dollar and consequently being
melted or hoarded. Since 1873 we
have put in circulation over 8400,
000,000 In silver, or more than 50
limes as xnrich as the total coinage
previous to 1873, and on the 1st of
last month tiie u umber of silver dol
lars was 430,790,041. ;
SILVER ASSERTION:
"Free coinage of silver will ex
pand our currency."
TBI FACT IN TUB CASE:
r A law decreeing the free coinage
of silver would instantly" contract
the currency by the total amount of
our gold coin (567,000,000) going
out of citculalion, for every one into
whose possession gold came would
board whatever he could save of it,
knowing that its value would always
remain unchangeable. To supply
this instantaneous loss of currency
with silver dollars worth in gold 52
eenls would require the operation of
a.. the mints in the country night
; and day for 10 years, during which
time a good deal might happen to us.
SILVER ASSBKHOS:
The United States has stricken
out and disgraced silver."
TIE FACT rN TOE CASK:
The United States are today the
largest user of silver as money of all
the nations on earth, excepting India
78 Second Street.
and China. India's stock of silvei
money is equivalent to $925,000,000,
China has $725,000,000 and the
United States stock of silver money
is $624,000,000. ' The next largest
stock of silver money is that of
France, $500,000,000. Germany has
$215,000,000 and the United King
dom only $112,000,000. Mexico, a
free silver country of which we hear
a good deal now, has only $50,000,
000 of silver money.
SILVER ASSERTION:
"This country is suffering from a
scarcity of currency."
THE FACT IN THE CASE:
The banks of New York City alone
are now holding over $20,000,000 of
idle currency, for which its owners
jean find no safe or profitable invest
ments. The banks of nearly all of
our large cities are in the same fix.
To coin or print more money now
would be merely -to add to this stock
of idle and consequently useless cur
rency. SILVER ASSERTION:
'The farmer or laboring man are
poor and wc want to introduce free
coinage of silver so that they may
have more dollars."
THE FACT IN THE CASE:
The farmer or laboring man can
today get as many dollars as he- can
(1) earn, or (2) give goods for, or
(3) give good security for borrowing.
There are probably 200,000,000 un
used dollars now in the countiy.. If
there were 10 times as many there
would be no other way in which the
farmer or laboring . man could get
hold of any part of them than those
above mentioned.

demands the utmost regularity of

, quite as necessary to remove

no health can be expected where
a costive habit of body prevails.
SICK HEADACHE!
"This distressing affliction occurs most frequently.
The disturbance of the stomach, arising from the
