cn OSES mclc VOL. IX THE DALLES, OREGON, WEDNESDAY; AUGUST 19, 1896 NO 194 YACHTS IN COLLISION Meteor Kan Into Isolde Dur- ing a Race. BAKOX VOX ZEDW1TZ WAS KILLED Member r Hie Crew of Isolde Swept Uvrrbuurd-But TheyWere easily llescued. Southsea, Aug. 18. By a collision be tween the yachts Meteor and Isolde this morning during the race for the vice commodore's cup, Baron von Zedwitz, the owner of Isolde, was so badly injured that he died before he could be taken to a hospital. All the members of the crew of the Isolde were swept overboard when the yachts collided, but were res cued from the water by boats from the other yachts. Ailaa, Britannia, Satanita and Meteor started in the race for the vice-commo-dore'a cup. Not long after the start and while passing the committee boat the big yachts Britannia and Meteor were almost abreast the Isolde and narrowly averted a collision. Britannia suddenly shifted her helm to avoid Satanita and Meteor struck Isolde, sweeping her from stem to stern with her bowsprit. Isolde's mainmast and sails crashed overboard, carrying nearly all the crew of the Is olde and crushing Baron von Zedwitz. Britannia and Meteor immediately hove to and lowered boats for the assistance of the men struggling in the sea. . Ailsa and the other yachts did the same. Baron von Zedwitz, when pulled ont of the water, was found to have a bad cut on the head and was bleeding from the ears. He was then taken on board a steam yacht which immediately made for Rydo, but died on board the yacht. He was a German privy councillor, member of both the reichstag and Prus sian diet. He had been in parliament for about .25 years, and was a Jeading man in finance and politics, and a leader of the free conservative party. Although comparatively young, he was unani mously recommended in 1890 by the etate cabinet for the post of minister of finance, but was not appointed because the emperor had taken a fancy to Dr. Miquel. Isolde, in addition to losing her masts, etc., had her bows stove in and was towed back to Sonthsea. Both races were abandoned. ' - A Boy Balls 250 Feet, at Netarts and Still Lives. Tillamook, Or., AuguPt 18. Charles Lamb, the 9-year-old son of O. G. Lamb, of Vancouver, fell from a high cliff at Netarts yesterday, and the chances for his recovery are doubtful. He . was as cending the hill at Maxwell's short beach when he stumbled and fell, roll ing over jagged rocks, and falling from shelf to shelf, until his mangled form finally rested on the "beach at least 250 feet below. A physician was summoned at once, and it is impossible to deter mine his chances for recovery at this time. No bones were broken, strange to eay, unless his skull is fractured, but he received internal injuries and his face was fearfully lacerated and braised, and his skull was laid bare in eeveral places. At last accounts the boy was not con scious, but was resting easy. A LETTS B FROBI DEBS. Democrats Most Have Popnllstlc 8op port or Suffer Defeat. Omaha, Aug. 18. Eugene V. . Debs has written under date of August 6, a letter to George P. Farrison, of Chad' ron, Neb., setting forth his views on sil ver and fusion between the Democrats and Populists. Debs says : "Without the support of Populists the Democratic party cannot win. Mr, Sewall can well afford to step aside to effect a union of the two great forces and insure the election of the people's can didates. Such action on the part of Sewall would make him a far greater man than the vice-president. . Failing to accord the People's party such recogni tion, which may culminate in open re volt, especially in the Southern states where the Populists have euffered all sorts of indignities at the hands of the Bourbon Democracy, and may cost Bry an his election and pet McKinley and goldbugiBm in power.- .-..--. : "There is a vast difference between Absolutely Pure. If the latter's only ambition is to swallow the People's party so as to' place them in power, and get possession of the offices, their design will and should be thwarted. I would far rather see McKinley elected than to bavo another Democratic ad ministration." TOM WATSON'S LATEST. Once ' More He Gives His Opinien of Arthur Sewall. Chicago, Ang. 18. The Post's Wash ington special says Thomas E. Watson, the Populist vice-presidential nominee, is but with anolher statement. Watson says: 'To expect to beat McKinley without saying a word against McKinley is some thing new nnder the sun, but Bryan's silence was proper and necessary. He could not afford to denounce protection while Sewall, his rnnning mate, is so well known as a protectionist. Mr. Sewall is even now- acting in league with the Republicans to secure legislation which will levy tribute upon every American consumer of foreign goods, in the selfish interest of the New England shipbuilders, of whom he is one; and just as Mr. Sewall's presence on the ticket prevented Mr. Bryan from assailing national banks of issue and the Republican doctrine of protection, so tbe same baneful influence prevented him from denouncing railroad monopoly and extortion, Mr. Sewall being a pro tectionist of lusty proportions himself. "In fact, it Beems the mission of Mr. Sewall in the campaign is to act as a contradiction to Mr. Bryan and the Chi cago platform. For instance, Mr. Bryan said in one of his speeches the other day that if be should be elected, the people who elected him would not be found asking favors of the government. We had not quite finished clapping our hands over this statement, before it was made clear to ns that the men who are backing the ticket in New England will demand that the government levy a fine upon every citizen who dares to buy for eign goods which are not brought to this country in the ships of Mr. Sewall and his Republican colleagues." Governor Chase's Estate. Indianapolis, Aug. 18. the adminis trator of tbe estate of the late Governor Chase made his final report yesterday, After the debts were paid, the widow re ceived $612. Governor Chase had in- vested heavily in mining stocks that are considered worthless. None But Ajer'n at the World's Fair Ayer's Sarsaparilla enjoys the extra' ordinary distinction of having been the only blood purifier allowed on exhibit at the world's fair, Chicago. Manufact nrers of other sarsaparillas sought by every means to obtain a showing of their goods, bnt they were all turned away under the application of tbe rule for bidding the entry .of patent medicines and nostrums. The decision of the world's fair authorities in favor of Ayer's Sarsaparilla' was in -effect as follows: "Ayer's Sarsaparilla Is not a patent medicine. It does not belong to, the list of nostrums. It Is here on its merits." . . There are two reasonable things which everybody should do; take good care of one's health; and if lost, regain it quickly, and to this ' everybody will agree. And there are a great multitude of people who art, agreed that for both purposes Simmons Liver Regulator ia the best helper. "I am troubled with torpid liver and nothing gives relief so quick like Simmons Liver Regulator." R. R. Strange, Lake City, Fla. Down to Business. Oregoaian. The Republican campaign is getting very wide open indeed. Sherman in Ohio and Davis in Minnesota have made two great speeches, which will etand as campaign classics of history and discus sion. Bourke Cockran opened the anti Bryan campaign in New York last night with a speech which will do more to elect McKinley than any Republican ef fort. In a few days, General Harrison, the most competent debater of great questions the Republican party pos sesses, will open tbe Republican cam paign in New York city. Apparently the Republican national committee is not idle. , - NOTICE.
