edly it is a sorry reminder to them,
but it cannot be said that they
showed such consideration for the
American business man and laborer
as to warrant such a sacrifice of
principle. The tariff is an issue, and
as such must occupy a prominent
place in the waging of the cam
paign. The Republican party has declared
for sound currency; the Democrats
have slumped to silver. McKinlej
represents the march towards pros
perity; Bryan a retreat towards dis
trust and bankruptcy. If the sound
money Democrats wish to see the
nation intrenched against the attacks
of such foes as are now seeking to
do it ill, they can accomplish such
an end by voting the Republican
ticket; but they must not seek to
dictate the policy of this party after
having failed in controlling their
own.
On the other hand, the free silver
Republicans who are declaring for
Bryan and free silver are turning
aside from the goal of former hopes
the restoration of prosperity under a
protective tariff when they have
nearly reached' it.

ASKING TOO MUCK.
That' the support of the sound
money - Democrats in the coming
campaign would be a valuable adjunct
to Republican success, is aa undoubt
ed fact; but it doesn't follow that
the management of the campaign
should be tarned over to Democratic
hands. " From time to time come
load complaints from Democratic
papers that the Republicans will in
sist upon talking tariff, and are giv
ing expression now and then to some
remarks concerning the condition of
the countiy during the past three
years which are not altogether com
plimentary to the present Democratic
administration. The position taken
"by these Democratic papers is amus
ing, and the arrogance they have as
sumed .s quite in keeping with their
actions at different times in the pre
vious history of the countiy.
Why should the Republicans
cease to present the tariff as one of
the bedrock reasons for their exis
tence as a political organization? and
why should they desist from con
lemning an administration whose
policy has brought untold woe upon
the nation? The Republican party
suffered defeat four years ago upon
the tariff issue. Since that time the
country has suffered from a commer
cial panic which has never been ex
celled in severity.
There ma' be those who will re
fuse to concede that this state of
affairs was brought about by the
free trade policy of the Democratic
party, but the Republicans believe
that such is the case. The importa
tion of foreign goods made by cheap
labor has compelled the closing down
f American manufactories and
thrown hundreds of thousands of
American laborers out of employ
ment. The removal of the duty
upon wool has brought, prosperous
wool growers cf Eastern Oregon to
the verge of bankruptcy, and cut off
: entirely the profits of many of our
lousiness houses,
With these facts in mind, is the
Republican party so cowardly as to
refuse to present the tariff as an is
sue, because by so doing the feelings
The Wisconsin Republicans are
organizing for an enthusiastic cam
paign. In their convention, which
closed yesterday, Chairman Lamo
naux uttered a striking truth when
he said: "Coming, as I do, from an
iron-producing section of the coun
trj , I haye no doubt but that our
people would favor free and unlim
ited coinage of iron at some arbi
trary ratio, and there would be about
as much reason in such a demand as
there is in the demand for free coin
age of silver at 1G to 1." This is a
simple proposition, which is the ker
nel of the whole matter.
That doesn't admire the handsome new stock of

it not true, that there is a large body
of people in the United States who
are so intatuated with hard times
that they are seeking a continuation
of present evils.
LATIN AND GERMAN TAUGHT.
GERMAN.
The undersigned desires to organize a class in
German. Every American citizen who can af
lord both time and expense ought to be master
of at least two languages. The German language
ba many advantages over modern languages on
account of her profound literature in all branch
es of ancient and modern science produced in
her world-renowned universities. Those who
would drink from these inexhaustible and vet
unadulteiuted fountains of knowledge, lnut
muster the language which contains the key to
them. The undersigned will organize a class in
German, and will begin with actual work on the
iirst day of September. The class will meet two
or three times a week in the evening or when
most convenient to the i upils. Rapid progress
guaranteed to those who will get down to earn
est labor. All who desire to participate in this
work will please announce their intention to
the undersigned at an early date, as the class
will be limited to a certain number. Charges
will be very reasonable.
LATIN.
The undersigned will also organize a class in
Latin. There are so manv reasons whv those
who desire to advance their knowledge beyond &
common scnooi eaucation snouid taKe at least a
course in Latin, that probably everybody is fa
miliar with at least some of them. 1 will not
take space here to speak of the beaulies of the
Latin language nor of the many advantages in
life possessed by those who have mastered it. I
will here onlv announce my intention to organ
ize a ciass in "Latin. Rapid progress guaranteed
to those who will work hard, charges very rea
sonable. All desiring instruction m Latin are
kindly requested to announce their intention to
the undersignsd before September, if possible.
