following, which is copied from the
"Western Teacher:"
There was trouble down at Podunk, not a teach

There were pedagogues' in plenty, but never one

As to undertake the Podunk school though sore

The schoolhouse stood deserted, its scarred and
battered door
Creaked idly 011 its hinges and the dust lay on

While through the broken window where a boy
had Hung a stone,
The squirrels scampered in and out and made
the place their own.
At last the school committee found a plucky
little maid,
Who thought that she could teach the school,
and didn't seem atraid,
Though they told her awful stories of the trouble
there had been.
So, though they felt misgivings, they engaged
her there and then.
The big boys held a meeting up in Farmer
TJrown's hay-loft
To discuss the situation. "Wonder if they
think we're soft?
No stuck-up city schoolma'ara can lord it over
us."
Bo they put their heads together and planned to

The school began on Monday and, when they'd
done the chores.
The little tow-head urchins and the girls in
pinafores.
The rosy country maidens and the boys who

All started lor the schoolhouse with books and
slates in arms.
At nine the school was started and tbe teacher
worked with vim :
Each urchin in tbe schoolroom felt her eye was
iixed on him.
Her quiet air of master J" made them all afraid to
shirk,
And before they realized the fact each one was
hard at work
The school ran on like clock-work, with a hum
of healthy noise.
And the teacher fatal error almost forgot
those Doys.
In working at the blackboard with a class upon
the floor.
She turned her back one moment and the
school was in a roar.
'Twas the deacon's boy, Jem Saunders, tbe old
est of them all:
A stalwart, young backwoodsman, and nearly
siz.ieet tan.
He had waited till her back was turned, then
quicker than a wink.
He seized the boy in front of him and daubed

So she walked across the schoolroom, and the

The scholars turned to watch them ; her lace

Then she had an inspiration as she stood and
faced him there.
And before he could defend himself, she kisfted

It wasn't "pedagogical;" she hadn't thought it
out;
But the effect was awful on that bashful coun
try lout.

burst into tears.

The other boys poked fun at first, and called him
"Jem Milksop:"
But when he'd "chastised" three or four, the
rest were glad to stop
The story spread like wildfire through all the
country side,

And some folks took, as some folks will, a dep
recating view, : -
But the deacon muttered softly, "I guess that

Martin Quinn Gets Office.
Mayor Pennoyer appointed Martin
Quinn, the defeated Populist candidate
for congress, superintendent of tbe
street cleaning department. After the
June election it was said the mayor
would proffer the position to Mr. Quinn.
The latter, however, declared he would
rather remain with the American Laun
dry Company than accept any public
office. After that declaration his ap
pointment comes in the shape of a sur
prise. '

meetings during the coming contest; it
has been decided that in order to treat
all parties alike, a one fare rate will be

meetings of this character.
