WILLIAMS &
GOV. RDSSEI.L DEAD
Occurred Suddenly on a
Fishing Excursion.
SUPPOSED TO BE HEART DISEASE
Wal Elected GoTernor of Massachusetts
In 1890 and Oave General
Satisfaction,
Boston, July 10. Ex-Governor W.
E. Russell of Massachusetts was found
dead this morning in B. W. Dutton's
fishiag camp at St. Adelaide, near Grand
Pabos, Quebec. Grand Pabos, the near
est telegraphic station to St. Adelaide,
is a little fishing place of only 300 in
habitants, and there are few facilities
for getting more explicit information at
present. It appears that this morning
the guides found he slept lopger than
usual and when they went to wake him
up, it was found he was dead. It is sup
posed he died of heart disease.
Governor Russell was born in Cam
bridge, Mass., in 1857. He graduated
with marked honors from the public
scboolB of Cambridge, and in 1873 en
tered Harvard college, graduating in
1877. He studied law, and was ad
mitted to the Suffolk bar in 1880, and
rose very rapidly in his profession. He
Berved his native city for seven years,
four years as mayor. He became Gov
ernor of Massachusetts in 1890, and so
general was the satisfaction given by
him during the first term that he was
re-elected.
Populists Differ Regarding- Bryan .
St. Louis, July 16. It becomes more
and more evident-each day as the time
for tbe meeting of the Populist national
convention draws nigh, that the mem
bers of that party will clash over the in
dorsement of Bryan for president. Let
ters from all parts of the country are
pouring into headquarters, some de
manding and some denouncing the en
dorsement of the Democratic ticket and
everything indicates that there is a most

decided . difference of opinion. The
opinion of some Populists here is that
the party is near the danger line of a
split over the queition. They express
the hope, however, that some definite
plan of action agreeable to all can be
decided upon at the meeting of the na
tional executive committee next Satur
day. Many of the Populist leaders are
awaiting the coming of free silver sen
ators who bolted the Republican con
vention. Upon the course they take
will depend in a measure the action of
the anti-Bryan following. If the Re
publicans come out openly for Bryan
and tbe Chicago platform the opposition
may not make much of a fight.
IOWA. REPUBLICANS.
Pledged to Btmetallsna bat Opposed to
Silver Standard.
Dks Moines, July 16. The Republi
can state convention was remarkable in
point of attendance and . interest.
Among the distinguished men present
were Senators Allison and Gear and
nearly . all of the Iowa congressmen.
Senator Allison's speech which warmly
commended Major McKinley and sus
tained the St. Louis platform i was tbe
real point of interest. The senator
spoke with much more than bis usual
warmth and when be pointed to the
picture of the Ohio man the conven
tion went wild -with applause. The
platform, after endorsing the action of
the St. Louis convention on tbe finan
cial issue, says : .
"In the interest of the export trade,
for the furtherance of tbe policy of re
ciprocity and for tbe promotion of our
commerce as well as for the benefit of
our producere, we pledge the Bupport of
the Iowa Republicans in congress to the
promotion of an international agree
ment to establish a joint standard uni
versally, and from "the same considera
tions oppose coinage to a single silver
standard, because it will decrease and
not increase tbe supply of money in the
country. The Republican party, under
its policy, assures the people ample cur
rency, composed of gold, silver and
paper, no one kind preferable to an
other, none of it subject in the hands of
the people to a variatien of value, but
every dollar as good as gold, and there

Silver Convention in Kansas.
Topeka, July 16. Nearly 100 dele
gates arrived last night to attend the
free silver state convention which con
venes, today. The silver leaders are
elated over the arrival of John R. Fos
ter, president of the First National
bank of Garnet, a Republican, at the
head of the Anderson county' delegation.
It is fairly certain the convention will
instruct its delegates to the St. Louis
convention to vote for the endorsement
of Bryan. It is conceded that every
Republican who takes part in the con
vention tomorrow intends to bolt Mc
Kinley and tbe St. Louis platform and
it is thought the convention may furnish
some indication of tbe probable strength
of the free silver bolt from the. Repub
lican ranks.
Tbe state silver convention met at 2
o'clock today. ' Of those present at
least three-fourths have been promi
nently identified with the Republican
party.
A Mathematical Problem.
Editor Chronicle :
If the people of tbe United States pro
duce $100,000 worth of silver bullion, sell
tbe same in foreign markets, and with
the proceeds buy $100,000 worth of the
products of foreign labor, said people of
the United States will have added to
their wealth just $100,000.
Should tbe people of tbe United States
coin eaid bullion into $200,000, they
could only get $100,000 worth of the
product of foreign labor for it; but
would be bound to take it back and pay
therefor $200,000 worth of the products
of their labor. How much would the
people of the United States lose? An
swer $100,000.
Suppose the $200,000 coinage is kept
by tbe people ot tbe United States?
How much as a nation have they gain

Last of Earth.
Tbe remains of Mrs. Irvine were
brought to The Dalles on last night's
passenger train and the funeral took
place at 10 :30 this morning from the
undertaking rooms of Wm. Micheli. A
number of old citizens followed the re
mains to their last resting place in Odd
Fellows cemetery.
Mrs. Catherine Irvine was born in In
diana Oct. 23,- 1838, and consequently
was 58 years of age. She was married
to John Irvine at Tbe Dalles May 27,
1855, and has lived in this vicinity ever
since. Eight children have been born
to them, four of whom passed to the
