JULY 14. 1896
THE POPULISTS' PREDICAMENT.
All is not serene in the camp of
the Populists. The nomination of
Bryan meets with great favor among
the rank and file of the party, since
Bryan is to all intents and purposes
a Populist. His indorsement, then,
by the St. Louis convention would
"be acceptable to many in the party.
Some of the leaders, however, are ob
jecting. To Peffer of Kansas such
a. course is especially offensive, and
there are others of like prominence
who entertain similar viewa.
The Populists are in an embarrass
ing position. Their stock in trade is
free silver, and they are pledged to
secure this realization by any
xBeans supposedly honorable. In
no other way can they do so much
for silver as by advocating the elec
tion of Bryan, who is silver clear
through. To refuse to indorse
Bryan would be laying the party
open to the charge of insincerity in
their advocacy of silver.
On the other hand, an indorse-
nient of Bry9n would be a compro
mise of the position which the Popu
lists have assumed towards the old
parties.
The corruption of other organiza
tions is a favorite theme for Popu
list orators to grow eloquent over.
They have declared that neither of
the great parties are fit to trust with
the government of the nation, and
that the only safe course to pursue is
to give the Populists an unlimited
lease of power. For them to in
dorse the nomination of Bryan would
be to turn back upon all previous
declarations and abandon one of the
chief tenants of their belief.
The Populist party is between the
devil and the sea. It would be bet
ter for the country if it should be
consumed by the one or swallowed
by the other.
The mistake of an engineer caused
the disaster near Logan, Nebraska,
where twenty-eight people were
killed and over fifty wounded.
Few callings in life carry with
them the responsibility like that
of the railroad engineer, and the
wonder is that there ar.e not more
accidents upon our great railways.
There seems.no excuse for the error
of the engineer ra this instance, and
whether his days be many or few, he
can be nothing else than a self-accused
destroyer of human life. The
engineer in the cab and the train
dispatcher in the office hold in their
hands the lives entrusted to them.
A traveler who in safety reaches his
journey's end little thinks of the care
and vigilance it has taken to aecom
plish such an end.
The ' free silver man admits that
the commercial ratio of silver to
gold is 32 to 1, and yet he wants the
metals coined at 16 to 1. Why not
carry the process farther and make
it 10 to 1, or 1 to 1. Legislation
can do as much towards establishing
one permanent ratio as another, and
if it is debased currency we want,
let us not stop half way.

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS.
It is estimated that the average life
insurance in Cape Colony is about $125
per head, a very remarkable showing-,
and indicative of activity among- insur
ance men.
A city ordinance in New York limits
the number of hand organs to 1,500. The
result hs been to crowd Brooklyn full
of perambulating music boxes, to the
great annoyance of the people.
It is understood that the- govern
ment of New Zealand will introduce a
measure for the exclusion of consump
tive persons on the same lines as that
dealing with smallpox, making masters
of ships liable. . -
The four burglars who recently
robbed the savings bank at Whitins
v'lle, Mass., had such a- high regard for
the rules of fashion that they commit
ted the crime after they had just arrayed
themselves in dress suits.
Some of the bronze tablet put up
in Albany, N. Y., at the time of the city's
bi-centennial celebration ten years ago
have disappeared. The tablets had been
placed on many of the historic spots
throughout the city.
One of the greatest hunting feats of
the season was that of George E. Farn
ham, of Canaan, Me., who, a few days
ngo, entirely alone and while standing
in the wagon holding his frantic horse
with one hand, shot, two very handsome
deer.
.Eighteen gold watches were found
quilted in the clothing worn by a baby,
a passenger on the steamer Saalc, from
Bremen, on her arrival at Roboken.
The baby's parents were arrested, and
on the father 12 other watches were
found. The 30 watches are worth $7,
000. St. Louis has suffered from three
very serious fires. The first came in
1S4!, when the loss exceeded $3,000,000:
the sccand. was in 1851, when 2,500 build
ings were destroyed, the loss exceeding
$11,000,000; the third occurred in th?
same year, when over 500 buildings
w ere destroyed, the value beingestimat
ed to exceed $3,000,000.

Ayer's Sareaparilla enjoys the extra
ordinary distinction of having been the
only blood purifier allowed on exhibit at
the world's fair, Chicago. Manufact
urers of other sarsaparillas sought by
every means to obtain a showing of their
goods, but they were all turned away
under the application of the rule for
bidding the entry of patent medicines
and nostrums. The decision of the
world's fair authorities in lavor of Ayer's
Sarsaparilla was in effect as follows:
"Ayer's Sareaparilla is not a patent
medicine, l it does' not belong to the
list of nostrums. It is here on its
merits."
