THE CONTRAST.
From noiv till next November
every Republican tbould have his
armor on. A contest is being waged
between the forces of commercial
prosperity and commercial dishonor.
The future of America depends on
-which wa' the election turns. The
humorous part of the campaign will
"be brought out as usual. Cartoons
ot candidates and politicians will
cause the comic papers to sell. Pro
fessional jokers will portray the ec
centricities and incongruities of our
political life. The demagosuc will
stalk abroad in the land and make
harangues, from the , emptiness of
which it might be surmised that
there aie no great questions before
the nation.
Hut there are. The Democratic
party is making an insidious attack
upon the finances of the country.
The free coinage of silver means
nothing less than universal disaster.
Government cannot legislate the price
of wheat; neither can it decree the
worth of silver. Every argument
that can be advanced for the free
coinage of silver applies as well to
the free coinage of iron or horsehide.
The advocates of silver show how
-weak is their foundation when they
lose all reason under the sound of
bombastic words. Should Bryan
be elected, this country would pass
through a period of darkness which
the shadows of the war could not ex
ceed. Every honest, thoughtful
American should look upon the com
ing election as one of the most mo
mentous m our history.
Not being content with the at
tempt to overturn our finances, the
Democratic party makes war upon
oar industrial system. It prefers
the laborer of Europe to the toiler of
America. It would rather see the
American farmer suffer for want of a
home market than see him sell his
products at a fair figure.
The Democratic party has had a
career of uselessness and incompe
tence; but it never in its worst mo
ments sought to do such things as it
is Attempting now. Instead of the
party of Jefferson. Jackson and -Til-lcn,
it has become the home of an
archism, fanaticism and freaks.
The city authorities have a duty
to perform in reference to the stag
nant water which has gathered in the
alleys and., low places between First
and Second streets. The present
condition is a menace to health, a
breeder of disease, and some move
should be made immediately tow
ards a change for the better. The
committee of the council on health
and police, who as a rule are not
overworked to any great extent,
would do well to give this subject a
thorough investigation and decide
what means are the bestfor the erad
ication of the evil.
The Democratic party has named
sl man for the presidency because he
is a good talker. , "Whether or not he
has been schooled in public life or
shows evidence of executive ability
is a matter of no consideration. He
is a whooper up: a dealer in rhetoric;
man of gesture and dramatic effect
These make up Bryan, and they are
all he is. And yet the American
people are asked to choose such a man
as their chief magistrate in prefer
ence to a statesman like Governor
McKinley, who served many j'ears in
congress learning the ins and outs of
national legistation; who ruled a
great state as its chief officer for four
years, and who has reached an age
in life where he is steadfast in pur
pose and possesses training and abil
ity to penetrate the truth, no matter
how darkly hid. The nomination of
Bryan is a travesty upon American
statesmanship.
It is amusing to watch the con
vulsions of some of the sound money
Democratic papers as they swallow
the nomination of Bryan. It is an
unpalatable dose, and inay prove in
digestible after taken.
NORTHWEST NOTES.
The executive committee of the Ore
gon state board of agriculture will meet
in Salem on Saturday, the 18th inst., for
the purpose of appointing the necessary
gatekeepers, letting the pool privileges
and attending to other preliminary busi
ness for the opening of the next state
fair. The personnel of the committee
is as follows : William Galloway, ex-of-ficio
chairman ; J. H. Albert, D. H.
Loouey, Richard Scott, Z. F. Moody.
The last thing written by Mre. Har
riet Beecher Stowe, only a few days be
fore her death, was a loving acknowl
edgement to the public for fond remem
brances and tokens and expressions of
affectionate esteem, on her 85th birth
day, which she sent to the Ladies Home
Journal. In the next issue of this
magazine it will be published in fac
simile. It reflects the beautiful nature
of the gifted authoress, and by her death
has become her last message to the
American public.
Rev. J. S. McCain, editor of the Co
qnille Herald, who is a delegate to the
Populist national convention, will leave
Tuesday for St. Louis. J. F. Johnson,
of Wallowa county, who is also a dele
gate, was to have left for St. Lonia yes
terday. In speaking of probable candi
dates, Mr. Johnson gays he has no fa
vorite, bnt that he is opposed to fusion
in any manner. "We should put up a
true-blue Populist, and if the free-silver
element means business they can sup
port him," is Johnson's theory. Eugene

'.' SHOULD not be regarded as
a trifling ailment in fact, nature
- demands the utmost regularity of
the bowels, and any deviation
from this demand paves the way
often to serious danger. It is
quite as necessary to remove
impure accumulations from the ,
bowels as it is toeat or sleep, and
no health can be expected where
a costive habit of body prevails.
SICE HEADACHE!
This distressing affliction occurs most frequently.
The disturbance cf the stomach, arising from the
imperfectly digested contents, causes a severe pain in
the head, accompanied with disagreeable nausea, and
this constitutes what is popularly known as Sick
Headache, for the relief of which take Simmons
