Both before the recent election and since, the Populist newspapers, and several Democratic ones too. are con. siderably exorcised over the views en lertained by" Mr. Tongue on the silver question. Some contend that he is, or bas been in favor of the free and unlim ited coinage of silver, others that be is an extreme gold bug, others that he has bean inconsistent with himself at one time. for free silver, and then againet it, The Hillsboro Independent has inquired into the matter and pronounces all of the above the veriest kind of nonsense. There has been no doubt about Mr. "Tongue's position on the silver question 'to any who have known him or have heard him discuss the queetion. In the campaign two years ago, and --again in every speech that he haB de livered during this campaign, he has stated aa clearly and unequivocally as -worda could state, his views upon that question, and his interpretation of the meaning of the platform adopted by the national convention four years ago. He believes in the largest possible use of .silver, consistent with maintaining the two moneys in circulation at par with' each other. He does not believe that bis could be done under a system of free and unlimited coinage of silver, and therefore opposes it. No one who heard him during the . campaign can have any reasonable ex use for undertaking to say that there was any question about where he stood on this subject. People who favor free coinage of silver understood so well his oposition, that they not only voted , against him, but worked against him, aad united their forces against him. ' It was for this reason that thousands of Democrats voted for Mr. Vanderburg. Alter the election, two years ago, the John Sayenson, Farmington, Or., deafness, cured. J. H.
