MCKINLEY AND HOB ART.
McKinley and Hobart is tbe ticket
which the Republicans of the coun
try are called upon; to support., v At
few times in our history has a spec-
tacle. been witnessed like that which
has just occurred at St. Louis.
For three years the drift of public
pipion baa been towards McKinley,
and in spite of all ' the shrewdest of
politicians could do to - prerent it,
the tide has never turned. McKin
ley his achieved a triumph such as
few men live to win. The nomina
tion has come to him with almost the
8am e unanimity that it came to Lin
coln the second time or to Grant
when he was the unanimous choice
of the party. James G. Blaine, who
occupied a place in popular affection
o ; ' - w...
years ever possessed, was not able' to
achieve even the honor of a nomina
tion without a bitter struggle and
then was allowed to meet defeat,
lilaine was the greatest . statesmen
this country has seen since Lincoln,
yet he never was honored as Mc-
Kinley was yesterday.
.: The reason is plain enough, Four
years ago the American people, made
reckless by continued - prosperity,
overturned tne existing economic
conditions and substituted instead
tection ami demanded free trade,
" Shrewd political prophets foresaw
the results and predicted an era.' of
distress throughout the land,, "and
meir prediction was tuiniiea to a
lamentable degree. Jfo sooner was
the Democratic party placed in
power than the mistake of the people
was realized. Prospei ity gave way
to commercial stagnation, .and the
country was rent in twain by busi
ness upheavals The wisdom of the
policy advocated by the Republican
leaders became apparent, and the
people yearned for, the reinactment
of a tariff law, similar in intent, if
not degree, to the one with which
the name of McKinley is indfssolubly
connected.'. - f
Then and there the McKinley
boom began, and it has continued,
increasing with time till the culmin
ating point was reached yesterday.
McKinley stands as the champion of
protection, and it is protection the
manufacturer, the business man, the
wool grower and the laboring' man
want. There are other men in the
..vuu do auic s ijiic gen
tleman who has . been named, but
circumstances have not connected
they have McKinley. " r :
The nomination of McKinley .is a
trumph for protection." jit is a vic
tory," also, for the people over- the
politicians, since the Ohio statesman
was opposed by. the men skilled in
arts political.
Garrett A. Hobart of New Jersey,
who is the associate of McKinley
upon the ticket, is not well known to
the people of the "West, but the Re
publican convention, which has acted
wisely upon all other, matters, pan be
trusted to have . uhown wisdom in
this, , and we unqualifiedly indorse
the result of their labors.

McKinley and Hobart 1 May the
enthusiasm that attended their nom
inations be prop hetio of their tri
umph next November.
Protection and Sound Money ys.
Free Silver and Free Trade. These
are the issues which . the country
must decide next November. The
welfare of the country depends upon
their proper solution.
: The Oregon, delegation expressed
the will of the business interests of.
the state "when they voted in favor
of the gold standard at I St. Louis,
Free silver must find its support out
side of the Republican party.
Garrett A. Hobart.
Garrett.: A; Hobart, Republican nomii
nee for vice president, was born at Long
.Branch, JN. J., in 1844. After receiving
a common-school education, be attended
Rutgers college, where he was graduated
when 20 years of age. He waa admitted
to the bar in 1866, and was chosen city
councillor of Patterson in May, 1871."'
In 1872, Mr. Hobart waa elected as
semblyman, and in hia second term was
elected speaker of the assembly. In
1877, Passaic county -sent him to the
state senate. He closed hia career aa a
legislator in 1881-3 when he waa the
president of the senate. ' ;
lie was the Republican caucus nomi
nee for United States; senator in 1884,
when John McPherson,' Democrat, was
elected. He was the New ' Jersey mem
ber of the national ' committee in 1884
and was vice chairman. He was presi
dent of the New Jersey Midland Co., the
Montclair railway and the Jersey City

of Chas. M. Gutfeld of Reedley, Fresno

to know what a eplended -medicine it is:
, "It is with pleasure 1 tell you that by
one day's use of Chamberlain's Cough
remedy T was relieved of a very bad
cold. 'My head was completely stopped
up and I could not sleep at night. I can
recommend this remedy." A cold nearly
always starts in the bead and afterwards
extends to the throat' and lungs. By
using this "remedy freely 'aa soon as tbe
cold haB been contracted it will cure the
cold at once and prevent it from extend
ing to the lungs.
