THANKFUL MOTHER'S BLESSING
Charity' Reward The Place Where It Is
Never Cold. .
There is nn old lady oh the Westsidp,
a whit.A-haired, . beaevolent-looklng
- woman.whose GO years of life have been
filled with good deeds, says the Chicnj?0
Times Herald. She is always doing:
good, and the worthy poor always rjjd
in her a friend in need. It was during
the first cold snap this winter that she
.heard a poor widow, an Irishwoman,
with four small children, who were in
: need of clothing: to protect them from
the cold. The next day, with a large
bundle of clothing, she visited the com'
f ortless rooms? of this unfortunate fam
ily. The mother had gone out, but the
children were there, and this old lady,
whose charity work is of the practical
sort, proceeded to dress the little ones
herself, beginning with the youngest,
a mere baby. She was just fastening
the last button of the dress of the
eldest, girl when'the door opened and
the mother walked in.' She was chilled
through, tired, and discouraged from
her failure to gret work. It took but
an instant for her to grasp the situa.
tion, and when she. looked into the
kindly face of the benefactress her eyes
were filled with tearR.
" "God bless ye, mum, for your kind
ness to my little ones," she said, "and
may ye never go to a place that is cold "
"My good woman," replied the eld
lady, "perhaps the reason I do this is
to avoid going to a place that is hot.
Enjoyed the Columbia Scenery. ' j
A few weeks ago a party of celebrated
tourists from New York state insi ected
the Columbia, river scenery from the
decks of the Regulator and Dalles City.
Considering; that they have often viewed
the famous Hudson river ecenery, the
following words of praise will have much
weight. In a personal -letter to the D.
P. & A. N. Co. they say : ,
"We had a moat delightful day, and it
was a revelation to us mat we snaii
never forget. The trip is certainly one
of the most Interesting and instructive
that a person can have in s single day,
as Irom the deck of vour steamers the
beautiful views with which the Colum
bia river abounds can be seen to perfec
tion. Please extend the thanks of all
our party to the captains and pursers of
the 'Dalles City, and the 'Regulator.'
They were all very kind and attentive to
us, in showing u9 the places of interest ;
their many courtesies added greatly to
the pleasures of our trip."

Thk Dalles .Chronicle According
to latest reports concerning Laborers vs.
McCoy, the settlement is far from ad
justed yet. Mr. Paulson - told Mr.
Driver today he would do nothing to
help him out of his financial position,
but would rather turn around and even
help to cbnvict both him (McCoy) and
Clinton. Now, the men are getting
tired of McCoy's promises and lies. It
has gone so far. that the men feel that
McCoy ought to do something to get a
settlement on the men's claim.
I do not want to etand by and see my
employes defrauded if I can help it. If
McCoy wished to do right he could give
the men one-halt of their earnings,
endorse same on the back of the men s
notes, and give real estate or other secnr
ity for the other half. The men are not
unreasonable; they want their rights,
hich they are surely entitled to. ac
cording to the times and wages now
going through this country. YourB
respectfully. F. Ericksox.
In the fall of 1893 a son of Mr. T. A:
McFariand, a prominent merchant of
Live Oak, Sutter county, Calif., was
taken with a very heavy cold. The
pains in bis chest were so seyere that be
had Bpasms and was threatened with
pneumonia. His father gave him sev
eral large doses of Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy, which broke up the cough and
cured him. Mr. McFariand says when
ever his children have croup he invari
ably gives them Chamberlain's Cough
Kennedy and it always cures mem. ne
considers it the beet cough remedy in

The president of a large accident
company tells this remarkable story
and locates the occurrence in Brooklyn :
"Some time ago a large policy holder
in my company was run over by a trol
ley car and his right leg painfully
crushed. He remained conscious after
the shock for three minutes, during
which time he pulled' put his watch
and called the attention of the crowd
to the fact that it was just 15 minutes j
to 12 o'clock. His policy expired at.
noon, and his foresight was rewarded '
by the immediate payment of his week-
ly indemnity without controversy or
litigation."

"Get it" is good advice, but "Take
Simmons Liver Regulator" is better for
your health and happiness. Everybody
should take a liver remedy occasionally

the torpid liver and keep up a healthy
circulation of good rich blood, free from
poieon and full of nourishment to the
body. "We would not keep house with
