A WISE PLATFORM.
The platform which it is gener
ally considered will be adopted by
the St. Louis convention, is one of
the strongest that could emanate
from that deliberative bodj The
convention will dowisely if it change
in no particular the report as made out
by the sub-committee. The pros
pective platform indicts the present
Democratic administration in 'the
severest language though none too
harshly and reaffirms the belief of
the country in a wise and equable
tariff policy such as we have not
been having the last three years.
This was to be expected, and causes
but ordinary comment throughout
the country.
Concerning the action of the con
vention upon the currency question
there has been anxiety throughout
the land. This is set at rest most
satisfactorily by the outspoken dec
laration in favor of the present gold
standard. The silver men have
learned that common sense rules the
day, and that the teachings of his
tory and experience have not been
thrown to the winds. The financial
plank declares against the fiee coin
age of silver, save by international
agreement, and pledges the Repub
lican party to maintain the gold
standard.
The Republican party has been a
friend to silver, and will remain so.
The country is now carrying as
large a silver circulation as is com
patible with maintaining the parity
between tha metals. What the
country needs is a rest. It needs to
Lave the tariff and financial ques
tions settled once and for all and
allow the business interests to be ad
justed to the existing circumstances.
The tariff issue has been settled in
favor of protection, but the cost has
been terrible. Ruined industries,
shrunken securities, dwindling values
all over the land represent what it
has cost to trifle with economic laws
and test the Democratic policy of
free trade.
The country will be fortunate in
deed if it can place .its finances on a
wise and enduring basis without
lying a price so dear. From the
attitude taken by the Republican
party and the expectant victory in
November, this bids fair to be accomplished.
The wording of the financial
plank for the Republican national
platform should be settled in ad
vance of the resolution committee's
meeting. There should be but little
trouble over the matter. The coun
try is looking to the St. Louis con
vention to express he sentiments of
the sound money advocates, and it
would be a grand thing for the
country and the pany if the pro
ceedings could be devoid of any con
tention as to how this particular dec
laration should read. If the East
cannot write the plank, let the Wash
ington platform be adopted. It will
fill the bill exactly.
their own stripe, but are of small
influence with the people. McKin
ley will be nominated in response to
the unanimous demand of the peo
ple. The politicians will not be able
to preyent it. ,
By the end of the week we shall
know what Senator Mitchell and
Representative Ellis' views are
upon' the financial question. There
is strong argument in the preponder
ance of numbers, and the will of the
majority is the wish of the politician.
McKinley and Morton would be a
good ticket. McKinley and Tracy
would be better.
A. UINIATUKE JOHNSTOWN..
One of the strongest arguments for
McKinley's nomination is the kind
of opposition which . is centered
against it. Piatt and Quay are a good
deal of weight among politicians of

Baker City, June 16. Last night,
about midnight, tbe Goodrich reservoir,
15 miles from this city, broke, and a
great volume of water rushed down the
gulch about four miles, where it jumped

About three miles further the flood
struck R. French's houie and dashed it
to pieces, drowning tbe family, consist
ing of the parents and five children, ages
ranging from 3 to 12 years. The bodies
were found scattered along the creek a
distance of two miles. The clothing was
torn off and the bodies mangled. Large
pine trees were carried miles down tbe
stream and fences and bridges were
swept away. Grain fields are badly
damaged.

MISSIONARY WORK..
Gold Men Vigorously Talking; Over
Doubtful Delegates
St. Louis, June 16. Lodge said today
"There's no doubt that the gold plank
will be placed in the platform. All the
information we get today confirms yes
terday's statement that the gold men
are in tbe majority."
Lodge and his aides, Murray, Crane
and Carties Guild, betook themselves
among the doubtful delegates on the
convention floor and poured arguments
into their ears. They have a detailed
list of men whose converstion may be
possible and are training all their guns
on.theee wavering people.
To Dr. Courtency, a young negro Har
vard graduate, has been delegated the
duty of whipping into line the uncertain
negroes, and be is doing the work while
the convention is forming.

The readers of this paper will be
pleased to learn that there. least
one dreaded disease that science has
been able to cure in all its stages, and
that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is
the only positive cure known to the
medical fraternity. Catarrh being a
constitutional disease, requires a consti
tutional . treatment. Ball's Catarrh
Care is taken internally, acting directly
upon the blood and mucous surfaces of
the system, thereby-destroying the foun
dation of the disease,, and giving the
patient strength by building np the con
stitution and assisting nature in doing
its work. The proprietors have so much
faith in its curative powers, that they
offer One Hundred Dollars for any case
that it fails to cure. Send for list of
