The Dalles Daily Chronicle, The only Republican Daily Newspapet n Watco County. MONDAY. - JUNE 15. 1896 PIONEER MEETING. " Tomorrow. June 16th. marks the fiftieth anniversary we will not say (as said in the yellow circular "pot out hy the Oregon Pioneer Society) "of the day when Oregon became a part of the United States," but when, by the treaty of 1846 she was recog nized by Great Britain as such.. We Tinow she was 'that all the time. It is, therefore, highly fitting that this anniversary should be becomingly honored. To this end the Pioneer Associ ation has made a great effort to se cure' the names of all such as wtre resident in .Oregon at that time. The roll of mmes, with such addi tions as farther investigation " has demonstrated, has been; published ; in the Oregonian, and as faf-as possible their piesence will be secured at.the jubilee celebration. Of these many will surety be prevented from going by infirmities of age andlll health, and many of them will be prevented from goins by other adverse circum stances. One thing is true, the rap idly diminishing , roll contains' Xhe names of those to whom we! of 'this And nf tVitt r'nn 1 1 1 Y-ir nmv u'nll rl c f m it. our privilege to show all honor. ' The Pioneer Society 'admits .as jnembcrs all who were here prior to February 14, 1859, when Oregon was admitted as a state. But of this not very large . number the "forty - ' sixers" are but a very few. There may be some in "Wasco county f we an now think of but one or. two. Mrs. . Gilmore, widow of the late Hon. S. M. Gilmore, now living in Klickitat county, was here in 1846, but, if .we have been correctly told, not within Oregon's then large bor ders until after June 15th. Mrs. Crate- the widow of the Hudson Baj' pioneer, Edward Crate, was here at that time and in "Wasco county. The association will be banqueted by the pioneer ladies of Portland June 16th. Hon.. G. H. Williams will deliver the annual address. - NLEY AND TRACY. The convention which meets to day in St. Louis promises to heed the voice of the people. Ever? in dication points to the. nomination of McKinley and the adoption of a sound money platform. The only contest seems .to be over the nomina tion for vice-president. The'-candi-dates mentioned most prominently so far are not men of wide j-eputa-tion. Governor Hobart ' of New Jersey .is not known widely to'-the people pt the West, while II. Clay Evans of Tennessee made his fame during the late celebiated guberna torial campaign in that states Levi P. Morton declines the second place, . though if the . convention : should nominate him it . is a 'question if 'he would not reconsider his former dec laration.. ' " .:"' We believe New York should 're ceive the vice-president, and among her distinguished citizens is a man well fitted for the office Ex-Secre tary Tracy, a member of -Harrison's cabinet ' and a wise statesman. If nominated for vice-president he would add greatlj' to the strength of the ticket. MeKinley, Tracy, pro- tection and sound money would be an irresistable combination. Wasco County' Keioircti. From time to time we are in receipt of letters asking questions concerning our county, finch as, " What kind of climate have you; what do -people find employ ment in; what of the boil, productions, etc."' t; - Wftsco county is in the northern cen tral part of Oregon, and reaches- almost to the 46th parallel -of north latitude. Being in the middle of the north' tem perate zone, it has the four seasons well marked. .But unlike, the eastern and Mississippi-' valley Btates of the same latitude, "the winters are much shorter and less severe, the cold seldom going below zero, and that for only a few days during .any , winter. Some winters .we have 'sleighing for a month or a little mote, -and some only for a few days. The climate is dry ; . sunshine being the tulc at all seasons; the greatest amount of moisture being precipitated daring the .winter in snow. However, spring rains are not unfrequent, there being as a rule, enough moisture to mature crops of- wheat, oats, barley and . vegetables without irrigation. On6 great interest in many parts of the county where irrigation is possible, is lruit raising! Perhaps no country .in the w.orld will produce the fruits of the temperate zone in greater variety or abundance. Apples, plums, pears, apri cots, peaches, prunes and most berries grow to perfection, and never fail: ' Farming has, as a rule, paid as well here as almost anywhere. The soil is light but fertile, readily plowed, and ad yet not filled with noxious weeds..' Wood and lumber are at hand almost any place in the county at prices that are as reasonable as could well be asked. Fine and fir lumber sells at the mills at from six to ten dollars per thousand feet. Land can be procured by homestead or at prices ranging from five to twenty five dollars per acre. ' - " Perhaps our eastern friends would like to.know about oar storms, cyclones and other aerial disturbances. The proxim ity of that great equalizer, the grand old Pacific, makes atmospheric disturbances of the classes pamed unknown except the' steady -gale. Water spouts occur now and then, but they are generally small affairs and cause little damage ex cept . to bridges. Clouds accompanied by thunder and lightning are of rare oc currence, so much so that no thought is given to protection against it. Dufur Dispatch. ; '. . When Baby was sick, t gave her Castorla. Queen "Victoria has just sustained a severe loss' by the death of Mrs. Mus sens, who, from time immemorial, had been her housekeeper at Balmoral, says the, London News. Though unknown, to the public at large; she -was an' Im portant personage in the eyes of every body connected with the court, as she was one of the few who had the cour age to "talk np" to her majesty; end even on occasion to deliberately "bos" her .august mistress'. Once when .the I queen- wanted a certain maid to whom she hnd taken a fancy detailed to the. care of her own room, Mrs. Mussens remonstrated in the strongest f ashinn, telling' her majesty that it was quite out of order, and she really must xot spoil the servants by taking undue no tice of them. The . queen, as usual, gave away, and "dear Mrs. Mussers" won the day. She was a typical per sonage of her class, gowned .always in. black silk, lace-trimmed apron and white cap, with corkscrew curls. She and the queen were excellent friends, and her majosty used to"deli jht in her conversation. She also stood high in the favor of the royal grandchildren, who iised to seek her out as soon as they arrived at the castle. But to the world at large she was a holy terror, and With the servant and members of the household she vas. infinitely more exacting and imperious than the queen herself. - Water Famine in South. Africa. The South African newspapers are full of amusing incidents in connection with. the Rand water famine. ' Soda wa ter at five shilling's n bottle is in general use for culinary and washing-.purposes. The demand for Florida,-bay .rum, eau de cologne and other liquids f like character is unprecedentedly great, and anything that can be pressed into the service of the toilet commands a fancy price.
