NOT A S5CK DAY
For Over Thirty Years!
RESULT OF USING
AVER'S PILLS
"Ayer's Cathartic Pills for over thirty
years have kept me in good health,
never having had a sick (lay in all that
.time. Before I Mas twenty I suffered
almost continually as o result f con
hi ip:it ion from dyspepsia, headaches,
licmalaia, or loi!x anil other ernptive
dim-axes. When I became convinced
that nine-tenths of my troubles were
caused by constipation, I. began the use
of Ayer's Pills, with the most satisfac
t.ory results, never having a single
-attack that did not readily yield to this
remedy. My wife, who had been an
invalid for years, also began to use
Ayer's Pills, ami hor health was quickly
restored. AVitU my children I had no
ticed tliatiicurlyaM iheir ailments were
preceded by. constipation, and I soon
had the pleasnre of knowing that with
children as with parents, Ayer's Pills,
if taken iu season, avert all danger of
-sickness." H. Wkttsteij.', Byron,.lll.

But Has Not the In telll'g race to Kindle a
Fire with Thorn.
Iso ereature but man has ever made
use of fire.- An African traveler, indeed,
has told a story of npes rnakiEg- a thiev
ing raid on a camp of natives, and car
rying torches to lig-ht their way; but
this story lacks proof, and is not ac
cepted as true by .zoologists.
There is, however, says the Youth's
Companion, in the Philadelphia zoologi
cal parden a monkey who has learned to
scratch matches perfectly well. This
accomxdishment he is willing-to exhibit
on any occasion. He has learned to hold
the match by its middle part, eo than
his fiDge.rs are not burned by being too
near the flame, and so that the match
will not break by being held t oo near the
other end. '
This fact involves another, that, he is
aware which end has the sulphur, and
does not attempt t;-- scratch the unsul
phurcd. er.d. He has furthermore
k-amt-d that a rough surface is better to,,
scratch the match on than a smooth one.
ind his care in looking for the roug!i
places Ls very diverting..
T5ut with all these intelligences,' th-?
monkey has no notion of hindling an
other fire with the one that he has
caused by the friction of the match. lie
simply lets th'3 match burn out, and if
he lights" another, dots it for the pleas
ure of seeing it burn. , . .-
This monkey's keepers, and the men
of science who are, experimenting with
his intelligence, hope to-communicate
to him eventually an idea of fire making
and using; btit from the moment thev
succeed in doingso if they ever do suc
ceed it will be necessary to keep
matches out of his reach.
- Sirs. Howe's Iiasbnnd.
Apropos of the "new woman," some
body resurrected an old story the other
day about- Mrs. Juliet Ward Howe that
may or may not be true. At ell events,
it was worth resurrecting. The story
goes that Mrs. Howe was one fine mt.vn
ing walking down Boaeon street, Cos
ton, when she met a friend who asked
her bow Dr. Howe was. "Dr. Howe?"
repeated Mrs. Howe, vaguely. Then,
as if suddenly recollecting herself ; "Oh,
he's tiuite well, I'm sure. I remember

of Chas. M. Guifeld of Beedley, Fresno
county, Calif., as they handle the rem
edy referred to and want their customers
to know what a 6p!ended medicine it is :
"It is with pleasure 1 tell you that by
one day's use cf Chamberlain's Cough
remedy I was relieved of a very bad
cold. My head was completely stopped
up and I could not sleep at night. I can
recommend this remedy." A cold nearly
always starts in the head and afterwards
extends to the throat and lungs. By
using tbis .remedy freely as soon as the
cofii has been contracted it will cure the
coltfat once and prevent it from extend
ing to the lungs.
