Rev. Wood anticipates in Dr. De
Kannet's lecture Friday night the best
ever given in the church, as regards the
essentials of interest, entertainment and
instruction. Following are a few, se
lected from many complimentary press
notices :
"Among the illustrated entertain
ments given at the World's Columbian
Exposition, none were more conspicuous,
entertaining and instructive than Dr.
De Kannet's course of illustrated lec
tures on Russia, which were always
given before immense audiences and re
ceived with the greatest enthusiasm, so
' much so, that at the end of his last lec
ture he was presented by Col. Francis
W. Parker, who was in charge of the
Worlo's Fair illustrated lectures, with a
gold medal, upon which is the following
inscription : "Presented to Dr. Gregory
De Kannet for highly instructive and
-entertaining lectures on Russia. World's
Columbian Exposition, 1893." At this
time, when so much is written about
this great, and to so many Americans
unknown, country of Russia, it is only
natural that a lecture on the subject by
one so well qualified to speak on the
same is proving so highly interesting,
entertaining and instructive."- Chicago
Herald.

ture that was' ever given ".before an

Poets have sung tho joys of winter
hospitality, when the snow storm roars
outsido and the log's in the fireplace roar
inside, and the bright welcome is only
equalled by the bright cheer of happy
guests as they thaw their frozen mem
bers by the ingleside. We Oregonians
do not have any of these joys, but the
ladies -who were the recipients of the
gracious hospitality of Mrs. French and
Mrs. J. W. Condon do not feel there was
anything missing. Great bowls of bril
liant tulips, vases of geraniums, banks
of pansies are very satisfactory substi
tutes for the winter ornaments of icicles
and snow banks. The floral decorations
of the beautiful parlore, in their profu
sion and grace, made one forget the stiff
wind outside. "
The amusement of-the afternoon,
aside from the merry talk, was decidedly
horticultural, and several of the guests
went borne able to think of many more
names of tree than they could when the
contest began. Mrs. Fish, owing to the
happy accident of the long straw, and
good guessing, was the fortunate recipi
ent of the prize, a potted "silk oak,"
When next the Dalles ladies pass an ex
amination on their horticultural knowl
edge tney will know that to be heard
talking of "cashew" is not a sure sign
one is taking la grippe.

The Artisans paeeed another of their
thoroughly enjoyable evenings last even
ing. The lodge contains several old-
line insurance men, so -whenever any of
these are placed on ' the -program- they
are always put down for a "talk."
Messrs. Whealdon and Furley, who
"talked" last night, filled the bill most
admirably. The musical program was
charming, and the lunch was superb.
Following was the program :

Vocal Solo J. A. Perkins.
Instrumental Solo Mrs. Eshelman.

The Only Difference.
The only difference between imported
cigars and the Regulator brand is in the
price. The duty on raw material is
much less than it is on the finished
article; so also is the freight. Leaf to
bacco comes 4th class, while cigars come
as 1st class freight. Smoke Regulator
cigars and give American workmen the
benefit. Made of imported stock.
