WITH BALDNESS
The Danger is Averted by Using
AYEO'S
HAIFJ f
VIGOR
"Nearly forty years ago, after
some weeks of sickness, my. hair
turned frray and began falling out
so rapidly that I was threatened
with immediate baldness. Hearing
Ayer's Hair Vigor highly spoken of,
I commenced using this prepara-
tion, and was so well satisfied with
the result that I have never tried
any other kind of dressing. It stop
ped the hair from falling out, stimu
lated a new growth of hair, and kept
the scalp free from dandruff. Only
an occasional application is now
needed to keep my hair of good,
natural color. I never hesitate to
recommend any of Ayer's medicines
to my friends." Mrs. II. M. Haight,

Thia Year's Fruit Crop.
The results of Observer Pague' a special
inquiry as to the Oregon fruit crop are
briefly these.
Clat9op, Tillamook, Lincoln, Coos and
Curry, and the western portion of Lane
and Douglas counties Few, if any,
peaches will be grown thia year. The
frosts injured the peaches and the rains
jtuieu wnat iu iroats leii. . xne prune,
pear and apple crops were slightly in
jured by the rain, but unless more in
jury result there will be a fair crop.
Columbia Fruit considerably thinned
- Clackamas Peaches, apricots and
nectarines nearly all killed. Plum,
prune and cherrv injured by the rain.
Washington and Yamhill Peaches
nearly all killed. Cherries slightly
damaged. Other fruit are in fine con
dition. ,
Waeco-Reports from Wasco county are
very cheering concerning the fruit out-

some damage which the cherry aud early
strawberry crops sustained from frost.
It is thought what little damage has
been done fruit was caused by froat and
not by the excessive rains of the past
.'three weeks. A correspondent writes
(and this is the general expression), con
cerning the condition of fruir, as follows:
"I fait to find any of my apples,' pears,
'cherries or strawberries burt in the least
by the weather, or frost; in fact.it is
seldom that the trees are' so loaded with
blossoms and buds." . It is the impres-
' eion that the strawberry crop will reach
market 10 to 12 days later than usual,
owing somewhat to frost injuries to early
bloom and partly to unsuitable weather.
Peaches have been hurt in all sections
and especially in the Hood River sec
tion the trees are troubled with curl
leaf. Apricots are doing .well ; applea
are coining into full bloom arid grapes
are making the usual growth.

PICKED UP IN THE STREET.
A Blacksmith Finds His Tool to Be a
Nngget of Pure Gold.
Curious things sometimes happen m
the gold bearing regions o the north
west. The Blackf oot (Idaho) News tells
of a somewhat remarkable experience
which occurred to a blacksmith at that
town lately. .
The smith, whose name is Farmer, had
ih his shop a grindstone which he wished
to "taper off." ' For this purpose n small
stone- was requisite. So he went out of
doors and made search for a stone of the
right sizo and shape. t :'
He found one somewhat smaller than
a hen's egg,- and returning to his shop
began to smooth down the edge of the
grindstone with it. )IIe had not
'smoothed" long before he thought that
the stone worked rather queerly, and
was, m fact, too soft to grind the stone.
He took it to his. anvil and broke it in
half, and then he found , that he had.
picked up a nugget of pure gold. "
Unfortunately, it was a rather small
nugget: He sold it for S5.S2 cents, and
though this was a very good price for u
pebble picked up in the street, it was not
wealth-
Walts Long for a Drink.
On Laurel hill in Bridgcton, N. J.,
there stands a house between whose
walls is hidden a quart bottle of the
purest applejack. The bottle has rested
there for 39 years, and has, according to
the old story told, eleven years more to
stay. When the house was built, 39
years ago, a quart bottle was filled with
"jack" and tightly sealed and plastered
in the wall by a man who had the house
built. The bottle is not to be 'taken
from its dark recess until the son of the
man who placed it there for him be
comes 50 years of age. The "boy" is
now 30 years of age, and in ,all these
years has kept true to the promise made
in the days of his youth to his father
not to ' touch the bottle of applejack
until he reaches the half-century mark
in life's journey.
Louis Napoleon's Prediction.
A correspondent of the New York
Sun calls attention to the fact that in
his "Recollections of a Minister to
France" Mr. Washburne says: "I was
somewhat surprised to hear him (Na
poleon III.) remark that he thought
Gpain could not hold Cuba, and that
the result would be that she would
sacrifice all her soldiers and spend all
her money and then lose the island in
the. -end."
