Judge Npithup has accepted the nomination of the gold Republicans sis their candidate for congress. The . contest will be interesting from now until the election. It is really not so much a matter of principle with those who have brought out the judge as it is to make sure the de feat of Ellis. . Now, if Democrats will stand solid for Judge Bennett, Lis election is assured. The contest is between Bennett and Northup. This clipping from the Portland Chronicle, i Democratic weekly, shows how the Oregonian is playing into the hands of the Democrats. There is no hope of Northup's elec tion but his candidacy makes the chances of Bennett exceedingly good. The mantle of virtue in which the Oregonian wraps itself is very flimsy. Its bolt and consequent auctions have not been done with a view of estab lishing a principle of right, as through motives of revenge, because of hatred against the men who opposed it in the late primaries. "Wasco county did not Support Mr. . Ellis in the convention, and we are free to say he was not our choice. But" he is nominated, and between himself and Northup has the only chance of election. . Multnomah county has repudiated Joe Simon. Let the rest of the state do it as well. ' While making no defense foi Mr. Elhs' silver views, we believe that he should receive the Republican support of Wasco county. Other wise a Democrat will be chosen, and have we not suffered enough from Democrats? The people of Sherman and Wasco counties have an opportunity this year of electing to . tbe legislature men who are in every way deserving of the confidence bestowed upon them. They are men of ability, clean in character, and identified with the material interests of the two counties. The campaign this year promises to be- free from mud slinging, as the nominees on all the tickets are above such dirty prac tices. For this reason the voters will have an opportunity to examine the qualifications of the various candidates. Messrs. Moore. Michel, Huntington and Jones make a quar tette of which any county may well be proud. Hy their actions in the legislature the two counties will be well served. The records made by Sheriff Driver and Clerk Kelsay .during their two years in office entitle them to re-election. Their duties have been well performed and the offices managed in an economical manner. If there is any reward for well doing it should come to these gen tlemen in the shape of, handsome majorities next June. Every dollar wisely spent upon our county roads is a good invest ment The returns will not be fully felt until the Columbia is open to the sea. This should be our first concern. Everything else is sub servient to it. Reed defeated McKinlej' for the speakership. It looks as if the tables are to be quickly and com pletely turned. McKinley has the masses with him, and after all the people are the rulers. - BUDS, Society buds, young' wo men just enterinpr the doors of soci ety or woman hood, require the wisest care. To be beautiful and charming: they must have perfect health, with all it implies a clear skin, rosy cheeks, bright eyes and 'good spirits. . At this period the young: woman is especially sensi tive, and many nervous troubles, which continue through life, have their orifrin at this time. If there be pain, headache, backache, and nervous dis turbances, or the general health not good, the judicious use of medicine should be employed. Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescrip tion is the best restorative tonic and nerv ine at this time. The best bodily condition results from its use. It's a remedy spe cially indicated for those delicate weak nesses and derangements that afflict wo. menkind at one period or another.
