    UNTOLD MISERY
f?HSU6V2ATIS.2
C. H. King, 'Water Valley, Mas., cured by
Acer's Sarsaparilla
"For five yenrs, I suffered untold misery
from muscular rheumatism.: I tried every
known remedy, consulted the best physi
cians, visited Hot Springs,' Ark., three times,
spending $1000 there, besides doctors' bills;
tout could obtain only temporary relief. My
flesh wa3 wasted away so that I weighed '
only ninety-three pounds; my left arm and
leg wero drawn out of shape, the muscles

being twisted tip In knots. I was nnable to
dress myself, except with assistance and
could only hobble about by using a cane. I
had no appetite, and was assured, by the
doctors, that I could not live. The pains, at
times, were so awful, that I could procure
relict only by means of hypodermic injec
tions of morphine. I had my limbs bandaged
in clay, in sulphur, in poultices; but these
gave only temporary relief. After trying
everything, and suffering the most awful
tortures, I began to take Ayer's Sarsaparille.
Inside of two months, I was able to walk
without a cane. In three months, my limbs
began to strengthen, and in the course of a
year, I was cured. My weight has Increased
to 165 pounds, and I am now able to do my
full day's work as a railroad blacksmith."

Pendleton's Moral Wave.
; Pendleton ladies of the W. O. T. TL
are urging a movement to abolish houses
of ill fame in their midst. A petition
' was presented to the council containing
400 names, as follows :
"To the honorable mayor and common
council of the city of Pendleton: We,
the undersigned, citizens of city of Pen
dleton, respectfully ask your honorable
body to adopt such measures as may be
necessary to prevent any person or per
sons from opening, setting up or keeping
or maintaining within the limits of the
city of Pendleton any bawdy house, and
to suppress and prohibit the keeping or
maintaining of any and all bawdy houses
within the limits of said city.
"We would respectfully represent that
ench houses aB there now exist in our
city are detrimental to the morals of the
. people of said city, and particularly of
the children of the city , and are a men
ace to the peace and quiet of the city.
And your petitioners as in duty bound
will ever pray." , .
Might not the Pendleton ladies be in
juring the cause of morality by their
action, rather than aiding it? -Lustful
and unprincipled men, driven from
their accustomed fields, are apt to in
vade the homes of respectability and ac
complish more deplorable ruin than ex
ists under present conditions. Cause
rather than effect is the proper object of
inquiry and reform. ,
A COLORED WOMAN TRAMP.
An
Old Auntie Who Has Been Coming
from Baton Kongo Four Tears.
A colored woman - tramp is approach
ing The Dalles, and is eeeu quite often
by the railroad boys running between
here and Umatilla. She is trudging on
ward to her unknown journey, except,
as Ehe save, she is bound for California.
The old auntie is something of a curios
ity, as she has been on the journey for
four- vears. . She hails from Baton
Rouge, La. She has some little books
which cbntain autographs from many,
together with the names of the places
where she has been. Unlike Schlatter,
ehe does not claim to be a direct lineal
descendant of Christ, though on a simi
lar mission "to preach de name of de
Lawd." In speaking to one the boys
sho said : .
"Bresa yor eoul, honey, I'se on my
way to Californy, and de Lawd smiles on
me kase I'se gettin' 'long fine. I'se
been four year comin,' de Lawd bress
you. ' The question was asked, "Wny
are you traveling this way?''
"Kase de Lawd said, take up thy feet
and walk. Take thv feet out ob de
mire aud go and preach my name. Go
to de fo' coners ob de earf and tell de
people ob his comin' and ob his name,"
"Would you not like to ride in the
cars.'
"No, oh no, bress your eoul, chile, de
Lawd said you mus walk, not ride."
She will probably reach The Dalles
about Wednesday, as she left Arlington
Saturday evening, and since she does
not travel on Sundays, it will take her
about three days to reach The Dalles at
the rate ehe has been progressing.
