Sharp Superintendent of Public Schools. . .Troy Shelley Coroner W. H. Butts FRIDAY. APRIL 17. 1896 PAST AND FUTURE. The future of The Dalles depends upon an open river to the sea. "When this shall be accomplished is uncertain, but every month it is de layed retards just so much the growth of the city. Nature has given us the advantage of location. Placed as this city is, at the gate way to the Inland Empire, it must, almost of necessitjv continue the entrepot of a large section. The Dalles has had its full meas ure of misfortune. It has suffered from conflagrations more disastrous than have overtaken any western town. It has seen the railroad shops move away, causing a withdrawal of hundreds of thousands of dollars from circulating among business men. It Las suffered from the narrow-mindedness and cupidity of uuprogressive citizens. It has lost by the jeal ousies and contention of warring fac tions. It has experienced all these misfortunes, and more; but not withstanding them all, the city has grown and prospered, and today com pares in favorable light with its sister towns in the state. The stability of our city .has been tested. No town could weather the storm The Dalles has unless it rested on a firm business foundation. Our history gives us a guarantee that the future contains better things than those to which we have so far at tained. , There are some subjects to which the attention of our citizens-should be immediately directed. First, the reduction in the rate of taxation. The city finances have been reor ganized and placed upon a basis hich may'be called satisfactory, but our county taxes are far too high Unless a 'change is made and the indebtedness reduced and taxes low ered, we cannot hope for any great investment of outside capital. Be sides too much of the profits of our husiness men go for taxes. Secondty. our trade influence must be extended to all points of the country tributary to this city. This ' can only be done by a sj'stem of roads far better than those we now possess. Trade' must -be at tracted to The Dalles, and it can only be done by building and main taining good thoroughfares. Lastly: As we have said before, we repeat row, that a large share of our present prosperity is due to the low transportation rates we enjoy through the agency of the Regula tor line of steamers. Without them this city would have been at the mercy of a single railroad, and it is well known that such institutions have no mercy. These rules aie worthy to be fol lowed Reduce taxes, seek for bet ter roads, and support in the fullest manner possible the Dalles, Port land & Astoria Navigation Company. Calamity howlers are given a good theme to talk upon in airing their pessimistic views. Bradstreet's last report gives some facts and figures which show the condition of busi ness to be' as distressing as the most vehement enemy of the country could wish. The failures in the United States djiring the months of January, February and March num bered 4,512. The liabilities amount ed to $65,513,926. This is the greatest number recorded for a like period in the history of the country. It is nearly 500 more than the next worst period, which was in 1884, when the failures, numbered 4,050. Statistics say it is 700 greater in number than last J'ear for the same quarter; 500 greater than in 1894, and 1,500 greater than in 1893. These failures are only reported from the business and commercial houses. The many disasters that have occurred in the agricultural classes are not reported. The evils which are resultant from the election of 1892 increase with the age of the present administration. The advo cates of the present tariff system claimed that when the Wilson bill had a fair trial its operation would be satisfactory. How untrue were such statements the business condi tion of .the country at the present time proves. It was generous upon the part of the McKinley men to allow Reed to secure the Maine delegation. Judg ing from the results in Minnesota and Nebraska, there is no telling what would have happened to this favorite son had McKinley turned his guns on Maine. Said to fie a Joke " The following was picked up on the street this morning by a Chboniclb re porter. It ia branded a joke, but the perpetrator evidently has some doubts as to the sincerity ofjour delegation's ef forts towards opening the locks: Know all men by these presents, that we have sold and conveyed all of our right and title to, nnd in that certain piece of work known as the cascade locks, situated in the county of Wasco, state of Oregon, to J. The readers of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure in all its elages, and that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a consti tutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foun dation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the con stitution and assisting nature in doing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers, that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case that it fail 8 to cure. Send for list of testimonials. Add reps : F. J.
