    , A SPECIFIC
FOR
La Grippe, for Golds, Goughs
AND LUNG TROUBLES,
AVER'S
CHERRY
PECTORAL
" Two years ago, I had the grippe,
and it left me with a cough which gave
me no rest night or day. My- family
physician prescribed for me, changing
the rcedicine as often as he found the
things I had taken were not helping
V
me, but, in spite of his attendance, I got
no better. Finally, my husband, read
ing one day of a gentleman who had
had the grippe and was cured by taking
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, procured, for
me, a bottle of this medicine, and before
I had taken half of it, I was cured. I
have used the Pectoral for my children
" and in my family, whenever we have
needed it, and have found it a specific
for colds, coughs, and lung troubles."

A BAND TOURNAMENT.
Mr. J. O. Miller Propose to Fill Our
City With Music.
Mr. J. G. Miller, a very progressive
citizen of The Dalles, the publisher of a
musical journal called "Harmony," and
a thorough, musician, has inaugurated
and is' pushing a most praiseworthy
scheme which haq operated in the East
with amazing success, and now wantB
the Pacific coast to share or rather dupli
cate that succees. It is for the forma
tion of a "Northwestern Band Associa
tion," comprising the states of Oregon
and Washington, that is a congress of
bands of the two etates that shall meet
annually in eome city, hold a five days
session and Lave a grand musical tourna
ment. There is to ,be no rivalry, no
.-chance for hard feelings, but on the con
trary, such a grand good time, with mu-
veical round-ups, excursions and social
.intercourse as will promote the friend
liest feeling and good fellowship between
communities it is poeeible to mature.
, Circulars have just been sent to var
ious bands by Mr. Miller throughout the
two states, and letters of acceptance
- -have come from Antelope and Corvallis.
Colfax and Dayton, Wash., . will also
probably be here, as they have already
expressed their hearty co-operation.
Salem bas a very fine band which it is
thought will be present. The first of
the five days' session will be one of re
ception, The Dalles band meeting each
in a glad overture of welcome, which will
; be responded to by the visiting bands.
The second day will be a grand parade
of all the bands, the lead band playing a
march, its last note to be taken np by
the first note of the band following, and
so on through the line without losing
a beat.'. The third day, the bands will
unite, all playing the same selection.
As there will be anyway ten bands at a
safe estimate, or about 125 musicians,
the volume of sound will be something
grand, the like of which has never been
heard in the West. .Concerts will also
be given in the opera house. It is pro
poed that thia meeting will be held
some time n September, and Mr. Miller
is working hard and will continue to
work to perfect all the details. It is the
plan for the vifiting bands to pay' their
own expenses of coming and going, and
the city to pay their expenses while
here. There is no doubt it will attract
many hundred visitors to the city, and
is really the most alluring class of tour
naments that could be imagined.
A TToaltliy Railroad Fireman.
A young- man in blue overalls and a
greasy cap and jacket is now employed
as fireman on the Long Island railroad.
ne is George D. Pratt, the son of the
late Charles Pratt, themulti-niil'ionairC
Standard Oil prince. Young Pratt was
graduated from Amherst college with
honors in 1893. ' As one of the repre
sentatives of his father's estate, who
is the second larsrest stockholder of the
lions' Island Raj 1 road company, he pro
poses to learn the railroad business
throujrh 'every grade, from laborer up.
He started in the car shops at Morris
Park, find after service at the bench,
the forge and in the assembling-room,
he learned how to use tools, how every
part of a locomotive is made, and how
the whole is put together. After hav
ing- served the requisite apprenticeship
in that department, he jumped into the
locomotive cab and commenced shov
eling coal in the capacity of a fireman.
Prisoner's Retorts.
Prisoners have a fair proportion of
"happy answers" credited to them. Of
these, perhaps, the "best known are
those of the man who, wher. asked if
he pleaded "guilty or not guilty," re
plied that he couldn't say until he had
heard the evidence; and the naive re
sponse of the prisoner to the usual
question before sentence: "Have you
anything to say, prisoner, before sen
tence is pronounced upon you?" "It's
very , kind of your honor, and if it's
quite agreeable to the court I should
like to say 'good evening-.' "
Leprosy in Iceland.
There are lepers in Iceland about
2G0 in all. Now an enthusiastic" priest
has determined to follow heroic Father
Damien's example to devote himself
wholly to the care of the unfortunates.
Already he has raised 10,000 francs and
is promised enough more to assure
the early erection of a comfortable
hospital. '
