JN THE MATTER OE A FIVE
DOLLAR BILL.
The recent experience of the Rev.
D. W. Wisher, pastor of a large And
influential congregation of colored
Uaptists, with the Hon. Caleb Simms
is full of interest and suggestion,
says the New York Tribune. It ap
pears that a week ago last Sunday
evening the Rev. Mr. "Wisher, hav
ing arrived at his church a few min
iites before the hour appointed for
the service, was there accosted by a
stranger, who after a hasty identifi
cation, handed him a letter. Mr.
"Wisher retired to his study and
opened the letter, presumably sup
posing that it requested the prayers
of the congregation for a sick per
son. To his surprise it contained a
five dollar bill, which he was desired
to accept as a slight token of Mr.
Simms' appreciation of his efforts to
uplift the colored race, together with
a postscript suggesting that the ser
vice which was about to begin would
afford a favorable opportunity of
announcing from the pulpit that a
mass meeting of colored citizens
would be shortly held in the interest
of Governor Morton's candidacy for
president of the United States. Mr.
"Wisher was much impressed by the
evident sincerity of Mr. Simms, but
tinder the circumstances .he felt con
strained to suppress the notice of
the mass meeting, and furthermore,
as a guarantee of 'good faith, to re
torn tbe five-dollar bill, which he
did not see his way clear to expend
ing as an uplifter of the colored race.
Unfortunately, the committee ap
pointed by the Colored Ministers'
Conference to wait on Mr. Simm?
and reinvest him with his testimo
nial was unable to find him, and the
money is still in the possession of
Mr. "Wisher, who expresses his in
tention of placing it in Mr. Simms'
hands at his earliest convenience.
Mr. "Wisher's decision in this mat
ter is sustained not only by consid
eration of abstract justice, but also
by' a strong and notable precedent
It ; will be remembered that during
the late presidential campaign Mr.
James J. Van Alen, havitg trans
mitted to the Democratic national
committee a check for $50,000, to
gether "with an intimation of his
willingness to accept the Italian mis
sion in case of Mr. Cleveland's elec
tion, was subsequently appointed 10
that office,"" but finally declined to
accept it on account of the irisun-
derstanding vLich had arisen as to
his motives in contributing a con
siderable sum of money to the cam
paign fund.
It will be remembered also that
just previous to Mr. Van Alen's act
of renunciation several high-minded
gentlemen, to whom Mr. Cleveland's
consecration was a very serious and
precious mattqr, resolved that "Mr.
Van Alen's money ought to be re
turned to him as a 'condition prece
dent to his withdrawal, and prompt
ly made liberal contributions to a
fuud for that purpose, thus estab
lishing a rule of procedure in simi
lar cases which is not in the slightest
degree invalidated by the circum
stance that the fund was never com
pleted, and that Mr. Van Alen did
not, so far as is known, choose to
accept the installment which they
had collected from one another.

In the church of Santa Maria Apnun
ziata, at Naples, girls assemble once a
year for the purpose of being chosen
in marriage. On the clay of Our Lady,
before its altar kneels a silent row of
HO girls dressed in .black, and with
folded hands. They are orphans of the
neighboring foundling asylum, end
c-nce a year those who have reached
the age of 18 have a chance of being
chosen in marriage by any honest man
whose character is gcod.
At the door leading to the sacristy,
says the Ilichinond Star, stands a
gray-haired priest, the head of the
foundling institution. By -and by a
young man approaches him and hands
him a packet of papers. These the
priest reads carefully, and, being sat
isfied, leads the candidate toward the
row of girls. The man walks slowly
along the row at. lust he stops; his
choice is made, and he stretches out his
hand. The girl rises, puts out her hand
into that of the stronger by way -of
consent, and together they disappear
into the sacristy. The ice having been
broken others follow, and this goes on
until the suitors are exhausted, or all
the girls have been chosen.
Not Scientific.
A song with the title: "There's a
Sigh in the Heart," was sent by a young
man to his sweetheart; but the paper
fell into the hands of the girl's father,
a very unsentimental physician, who
exclaimed:
"What wretched, unscientific rubbish
is this? Who ever heard of such a
case?'!
He wrote on the outside:
"Mistaken diagnosis; no sigh in the
heart possible Sighs relate almost en
tirely to the lungs and diaphragml"

The readers of this paper will be
pleased to learn that there is at least
one dreaded disease that science has
been able to cure in all its stages, and
that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is
the only positive cure known to the
medical fraternity. Catarrh being a
constitutional disease, requires a consti
tutional treatment.' Ball's Catarrh
Cure is taken internally, acting directly
upon the blood and mucous surfaces of
tbe system, thereby destroying the foun
dation of tbe disease, and giving the
patient strength by building up tbe con
stitution and assisting nature in doing
its work. The proprietors have so much
faith in its curative powers, that they
offer One Hundred Dollars for any case
that it fails to cure. Send for list of

Ayer's Sarsapariila enjoys the extra
ordinary distinction of having been the
only blood purifier allowed on exhibit at
the world's fair, Chicago. Manufact
urers of other sarsaparillas sought by
every means to obtain a showing of their
goods, but they were all turned away
under the application of the rule for
bidding the entry of patent medicines
and nostrums. The decision of the
world's fair authorities intavor of Ayer's
Sarsapariila was in effect as follows:
"Ayer's Sareaparilla Is not a patent
medicine. It does not belong to the
list of nostrums. It la here on its
merits." ' '
