LBFS SAVED
By the Persistant Uso of
Ayer's Sarsaparilla
"I was troubled for yeav3 with a .
sore on my knee, which sever.il
physicians, who treated me, cr.lled a
cancer, assuring me that nothing
could be done to save my lil. As
a last resort, I was induced to try
.Ayer's Sarsapar.lla, and, after tak
ing a number o bottles, the sore
began to disappear and my general
health improve. I persisted in this
treatment, until the sore was en
tirely healed. Since then I use
Ayer's Sarsaparilla occasionally as
x tonic and -blood-purifier, and, in
deed, it seems as thoutrh I could not
keep house without it." Mrs. S. A.

Mr. n. C. Newman went to Portland
this morning.
Mrs. H. C. Levit of Lyle left for Port
land today and will visit her brother in
that city.
Mies Smith of Portland, who has been
visiting Miss Ketchum of this city, re
turned to her home In Portland this
morning.
Captain Ward, the former captain of
the Salvation Army here, now stationed
at Corvallia, ia stopping with the army
at The Dalles for a three weeks' visit.
Mrs. J. P. Stewart, who has been the
guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. 8. Myers for
several Tears, went to Portland for a few
weeks absence, where she will visit her
on.
Br. A. A. Witham, physician and sur
geon, is now in the city, en route to
Grass Valley, and is . the guest of
Dr. F razer.of this city, an old friend and
fellow student. It has hot been long
since Dr. Witham has been entitled to
attach the coveted "M. D." to his signa
tr.re. His name appears in the list of
1 members as having graduated from
the medical department of the univer
sity of Oregon, at the commencement
last night. Ue at once took the train

Abutting a Squaw.
The tide of human misery will never be
told. The latest instance is that of a
hard-working sqnaw who is paid little or
nothing for her labor, in fact not enough
to supply her and her child with neces
sary food. This child, a daughter, has
been sick for a long time, and lies in bed
without assistance, suffering great pain,
while the mother is out working for the
pittance she gets to procure any food at
all. Some time since she- called on the
Indian doctor to Bee her child. Of
coarse be did her no good, bnt insisted
- on his fee. She could not pay it, and
the "doctor" took her last blanket, so
that now she sleeps coverless during the
long, cold nights. She is a squaw, to be
core, but sbe is a human being and
. thould not be abused because of her ig
norance. She tells of being here during
the days of General Grant, but she is
yet strong and capable of doing perhaps
more work than any woman in town.
"The trouble is she is underpaid or not
paid at all. She has been known to do
- three large washings for 60 cente, the
: same work a sleek-and impudent China
man would charge f3 for, and her good
nature further imposed npon by being
asked to scrub the floor. In the inter--estt
ti humanity; we call attention to
tbcaso bf this poor Indian woman, and
urge upon the good people of the town
the practice of that Christian charity,
and fairness which will enable her to
get value received for her labor, and that
she and her child may not suffer from
hunger and cold after fairly earning
both food and shelter.
"Plnnlgran's Ball.1
The Baldwin opera house will have a
Tattling attraction Monday night next,
when Murray and Mack will be seen in
a strictly characteristic vehicle entitled
"Finnigan's Ball." The title admits of
the widest scope of action, and due ad
vantage is taken of every laughter-pro
Sir
voking possibility. The piece has no
moral, and there is no claim that an ef
fort is being made to elevate the stage or
raise a new brood of Hamlets. The
entertainment is solely for the purposes
of amnsement, and in that respect only
appeals for criticism. It has a plot and
considerable legitimate dialogue, and it
is claimed that there is no interference
with either. At the same time there
are numerous specialties by bright peo
ple, and a semi-vandeville character is
imparted. Murray and Mack are artists
in their special lines, and are very droll
in all that they do.
"""The supporting company is especially
strong, consisting of such clever artists
as George' H. . JSmerick, Clayton E.
White, Bert Leslie, Charles Lamb,
Frank Carletou, Gracie Cummings,
Edith Newton, the Loring sisters, Win
nifred Stewart, Lonnie Deaue and Clara
Burgess.
A. Mew Schedule.
A schedule will go into effect on the
through Eastern trains of the O. B. & N.
and Great Northern Railway Companies
next Tuesday by which the time between
Portland and St. Paul will be shortened
12 hours, says the Oregonian. The Dal
les also will be benefited in having a
straight passenger train service in place
of the mixed service now in force.
Out of Portland, local trains Nos. 7
and 8, to The Dalles, will be made
straight passenger trains, instead of
mixed, as at present. No. 8 will leave
Portland at 8:35 a. m. and arrive at The
Dalles at 12:05 p. m. Returning, the
train will leave The Dalles at 2:30 p. m.
and arrive at Portland at 6 p. m. This
new run to The Dalles will save about
one and a half hours in time.
Tram No. 3 on the Great Northern
will leave St. Puul at 3 p. m., making
but a few etops between St. Paul and
Grand Forks. Arrive at Helena at 7 :30
on the second day out; at Butte at 11 :30
a. m. ; and at Spokane at 3 :20 p. m. the
second day out. At Spokane the train
will be divided and proceed on its own
line to Seattle, reaching there at 8 a. m.
and on the O. E. & N. for Portland as
follows :
Leaves Spokane at 3 :40 p. m. ; arrives
at Walla Walla at 11:05 p.m.; at The
Dalles at 4 :40 a. m. ; at Portland at 8 :30
a. m.
At Walla Walla, on the O. It. & N.,
the train will make connection with the
Oregon division No. "1.
Dr. PIERCE'S
Golden Medical
DISCOVERY
Cures Nlnety-elgbt per cent, of all
cases of Consumption, in all it3
Earlier Stages.
Although by manjr believed to be incura
ble, there is the evidence of hundreds of
living witnesses to the fact that, in all its
earlier stages, consumption is a curable
disease. Not every case, but a large per
centage of cases, and we believe, Jully 98
per cent, are cured by Dr. Pierce's Golden
Medica1, Discovery, even after the disease
has progressed so far as to induce repeated
bleedings from the lungs, severe lingering
cough with copious expectoration (includ
ing tubercular matter), great loss of flesh
and extreme emaciation and weakness.
Do yon doubt that hundreds of such cases
reported to us as cured by " Golden Med
ical Discovery " were grenuine cases of that
dread and fatal disease ? You need not take
our word for it. They have, in nearly every
instance, been so pronounced by the best
and most experienced home physicians,
who have no interest whatever in mis
representing them, and who were often
strongly prejudiced and advised against
a trial of "Golden Medical Discovery,"
but who have been, forced to confess that
it surpasses, in curative power over this
fatal malady, all other medicines with
which they are acquainted. Nasty cod
liver oil end its filthy "emulsions" and
mixtures, had been tried in nearly all these
cases and had either utterly failed to bene
fit, or had only seemed to benefit a little for
a short time. Extract of malt, whiskey,
and various preparations of the hypophos
phites had also been faithfully tried in vain.
The photographs of a larjre number of
those cured of consumption, bronchitis,
lingering coughs, asthma, chronic nasal
catarrh and kindred maladies, have been
skillfully reproduced in a book of 160
pages which will be mailed to you, on re
ceipt of address and six cents in stamps.

In the fall of 1893 a son of Mr. T. A.
McFarland, a prominent merchant of
Live Oak, Sutter county, Calif., was
taken with a very heavy cold. The
pains in his chest were so severe that he
had spasms and was threatened with
pneumonia. Hia father "gave him sev
eral large doses of Chamberlain's Cough

cured him. Mr. McFarland says when
