Mansfield of Sonuyside was preeented
with a beauiful pair of twins under ex
traordinary circumstances. The Tele
gram relates the following particulars:
Miss Lucy Mansfield, the eldest
daughter, stepped to the front door for
the morning milk about 7 o'clock. Be
side the can; eh e beheld a large and
handsome wicker basket holding two
very . handsome infants. . The Bight
startled her, and she ' called for her
father, who came out and carried the
basket into the house. : The bedding in
the basket and the dresses of the babes
a boy and a girl, both about a week old
were of the costliest material. Pinned
to the pink coverlet beneath a gossamer
blanket, was a note written in a beau
tiful hand, and evidently penned by a
woman of some education. It read as
follows :
Kind Friends: ; These children weie
born in holy Wedlock, ,but their father
is far away from the scene. I also am a
stranger in your midst, having lived in
Portland a month only. For reasons I
cannot explain, I am compelled to con
sign my little ones to y oar care, and I
pray you care well for them, so that the
blessing of God may rest upon yon.
Herein I inclose $20 for their first
month's care, and a similar sum will be
transmitted to yon on the first of every
month hereafter.
Should anything befall my children,
or should you at any time . remove from
your present . home, communicate such
fact to 'Alpha and Omega,' care of the
Anglo-Californian bank at San Fran
cisco, Cal.
"In time, if conditions permit, I will
make myself known to you. But should
such time never arrive, I assure you
that the children will have a good com
petency when reaching their majority.
You also shall be better rewarded for
what kindnesses you may, bestow .upon
them. May God bless yon and my
little ones from whom I am parted by
cruel fate." .
The letter bore no signature, and the
Mansflelds are at a loss to account for
their selection to carry out the mission
imposed npon them. They ' haven't the
remotest idea who the mother of the
twins ib, but as they are not well pro
vided with worldly goods, the promised
$20 a month will prove a help to them.
The mother is presumably well to do,
and from her fortune rewards are ex
pected.

The readers of this "paper will be
pleased to learn that there- is at , least
one dreaded disease that science has
been able to cure in all its stages, and
that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is
the only positive cure known to the
medical fraternity. Catarrh being a
constitutional disease, requires a consti
tutional treatment. .Hall's Catarrh
Cure is taken internally, acting directly
upon the blood and mucous surfaces of
the system, thereby destroying the foun
dation of the disease, and giving the
patient strength by building up the con
stitution and assisting nature in doing
its work. The proprietors have so much
faith in its curative powers, that they
offer One Hundred Dollars for any case
that it fails to cure. Send for list of

BAPTIST CHURCH.
Rev. O. D. Taylor, in his morning ser
mon at the Baptist church spoke from
Exodus xiii:19, "And Moses took the
bones of Joseph with , him, for be had
straightly sworn the children of Israel
saying, God will surely visit you, and ye
ehall carry up my bones away hence
with you." In his youth Joseph was
taught the promise of God that he would
bring Israel into the land of Canaan
Goa ciso visited mm in a dream in
which he was told of bis mission to hi6
own people. The promise of God he
never doubted, and though his people
had been brought down to Egypt and he
was about to die by faith he commanded
that his bones should be carried to the
promised land. While he was confront
ed by the promise, he did not neglect
the duties laid upon him in the vision,
and as a brother to his own brethren, a
slave in the household of Potipbar, a
prisoner in a dungeon of Egypt, a
next in power to the king on the throre,
he maintained his integrity and was dili
gent in his service. The people of God,
like ' the . Israel of old, have iregarded
themselves as pilgrims and strangers in
this world. Here we Thave no continu
ing city, but we eeek the city whose
maker and builder is God. By faith we
lay hold upon the exceeding great and
precious promises, aad meet the trials of
life with fortitude, eyen as Moses en
dured as seeing bim who is invisible.
while we wait the promised coming of
the Son of Man in bis glory who shall
take ns across the Jordan of death to
dwell with him forever in the para
dise of God.

W. E. Bunnell, a rancher, 35 years old

to many of our citizens, was accidentally
drowned in the Columbia river at about
12:40 yesterday afternoon, near'Taylor's

by the current, and may not be recovered
for some time, if ever. The following
particulars are gleaned from the Oregon

cane down the river at the time,- and
cue gust carried off McCary's hat, land
ing it on the shore. The boat was pulled
to the shore, where McCary jumped off,
leaving Bunnell alone in the .boat
The boat drifted out into the stream a
little way, and while standing up in the
fcoat, through some inexplicable reason,
Bunnell either lost his balance or was
Yilown overboard. Anyhow, McCary
and others on the shore were horrified
to see Bunnell struggling in the water,
and making vain endeavors to reach t'o
shore. The heavy wind had created a
choppy sea, that appeared to choke the
drowning man, and, after struggling for in times of industiial depression there
nearly ten minutes, he sank for the last are people who wait for labor and ap-
