BARE-NECKED SKATERS.
Holland Women Appear on the Ice with
Ball-Gown Bodices.
We are accustomed to see women bun
dled up in furs as they glide over the ice.
To witness a woman's race in Holland
would give us a greater chill than to
meet a gliost at midnight. A foreign
correspondent, in mentioning a contest
on skates, describes it as follows :
"It was snowing slightly, but in
every available moment between the
races troops of men were told to clear
the course. At a given signal six wom
en started for the first.race. They were
dressed in very short skirts, and transparent-looking
blouses, low necks, with
no sleeves at all. We were told they
were from among the lower peasant
people, and that the shop classes nevei
entered the lists at all. The speed they
went at was something wonderful, and
especially remarkable at the corners.
For the most part they raced with their
arms behind them, but the girl who
won the prize (two pounds sterling)
skated with hers folded in front."

Property of the Khedive lncrusted with
Precious Stones.
It is said tha V-he Only complete gold
toilet" set in the world belongs to the
khedive of Egypt. Its exact value is not
known, but. it must be enormous, for the
set is incrusted with diamonds and
other precious stones. Egypt, by the
way, has a deht of about $525,000,000,
and besides the interest on this has to
pay an annual, tribute to the stiltan of
Turkey amounting to nearly $3,500,000.
Despite this the present khedive has
been following in the footsteps of his
predecessors, whose extravagances
brought about the present almost bank
rupt condition of the country.
Each piece of the khedive's golden
toilet set bears his monogram in dia
monds. Upward of 3,000 diamonds and
over 1,200 rubies were used in decorat
ing these gorsreous adjuncts to the
Egyptian ruler's dressing-table. The
body of each of the 28 pieces is of 18
karat gold, and all are inclosed in a dia-mond-incrusted
ebony case.
The Chambermaid's Tips.
A pleasing story is told by the crown
prince of Germany, who, with his
brother, was recently with their tutor
at the hotel of the Chutes du Rhin.
When the tutor paid the bill he offered
a money present to the chambermaid,
who, however, refused the gift, point
ing to a notice that tips were forbidden.
The tutor explained the situation to the
eldesl pupil, who thereupon went out
with his brother and bought a very
pretty brooch. This he gave to the
maid, saying that, "as it was not money,
she could not refuse it." As the young
princes were staying at the hotel in
cognito the maid did not know that
the donor of the brooch will probably
be emperor of Germany some day.
The Field of Lies.
The Field of Lies was the battle

against his three sons. The unfortunate
monarch was deserted by his own army;
he was twice shut up in a cloister, twice
compelled to do public penance, and
twice released to pacify the quarrels of

Charity's Reward The Place Where It Is
Never Cold.
There is nn old lady on the West side,
a white-haired, benevolent-looking
woman.whose CO years of life have been
filled with good deeds, says the Chicago
Times Herald. She is always doing
good, "and the worthy 'poor always r.Dd
in her a friend in need. It was during
the first old snap this winter that she
heard a poor widow, an Irishwoman,
with four small children, who were in
need of clothing to protect them from
the cold. The next day, with a large
bundle of, clothing, she.visited the com
fortless rooms of this unfortunate fam
ily. The mother had goneout.but the
children were there, and this old lady,
whose charity work is of the practical
sort, proceeded to dress the little ones
herself, beginning with the youngest,
a mere babj-. She was just fastening
the last button of the dress of the
eldest girl when the door opened and
the mother walked in. She was chilled
through, tired, and discouraged from
her failure to get work. It took but
an instant for her to grasp the situa
tion, and when she. looked into the
kindly face of the benefactress her eyes
were filled with tears.
"God bless ye, mum, for your kind
ness to my little ones," she said, "and
may ye never go to a place that is cold "
"My good woman," replied the old
lady, 'perhaps the. reason I do this is
to avoid going to a place that is hot."'
