La Grippe, for Golds, Coughs,
AND LUNG TROUBLES,
AVER'S PECTORAL
"Two years ago, I had the grippe,
and it left me with a cough which gave
me no re t night or day. My family
physician prescribed for me, changing
the rcedi ine as often as he found the
things I had taken were not helping
'?S0
me, hut, in spite of his attendance,-1 got
no better. Finally, my husband, read
ing one day of a gentleman who had
had the prippe'and was cured by taking
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, procured, for
me, a bottle of this medicine, and before
I had taken half of it, I was cured. I
have used the Pectoral for my children
and in my family,- whenever we have
needed it, and have found it a specific
.for colds, coughs, and lung troubles.''

Something Wrong. - . 1 :
The force of men who came up to work
on the McCoy ditch -expected the arrival
of Mr. F. Erickson from Portland last
night, who has the work in charge. He
failed to arrive on the boat and did not
come later on the train. But this morn
ing, the foreman, Mr.'Stephens received
a letter from Erickson, staling that be
had gonn to San Francisco. The letter
was written in sncli a way as to mystify
the furce who are here, and they do not
. understand just why he has made so
sudden a change in. plana. They are
therefore completely demoralized.- "With
out a director'and in a strange place,
they are at. a loss to know what is bestj
. for them individually to do-. Erickson
iid not (rive his reason for going, did
hot . say when he would be back,, and
made the matter more' mysterious than
ever by telling the" foreman to write him
. at either San, Francisco or San Luis
Obicpu. That something is wrong is
vldent from the fact that twenty horses
which wer shipped from Portland to
The Dalles yesterday were ordered
shipped back on reaching the Locks.

CROSS-EYED HEADLIGHTS.
New Idea for Lighting Railroad Tracks
- on a Dark Night. .
A new thing" in track lighting has
been put into service on the New York
New Haven & Hartford railroad on the
new "aii line flyer" between New York
nnt1 Boston, says the Boston Transcript.
It is the cross-eyed headlight, an in
vention of Col. N. H. Heft, of the elec
trical department, and it is said to be
such a success that it will be supplied
as speedily as possible to. all through
fast trains on the road that run in the
night. Superintendent Ostrander ex
plains the use of the two headlights,
which are set "cross-eyed," or precise
ly as the eyes are set in some cross
eyed persons. They are set thus so
that each will throw a light across the
other's rays. The light on the right
hand side is thrown over the left, and
that on the left over the right. It has
been found that this arrangement is
or great advantage in throwing a light
around a cur.ve. The single headlight
hitherto in use shines straight ahead
when the locomotive is turning a curve.
The fields, or. whatever is alongside of
the tracks upon which the train is dash
ing, are illuminated, but the rails ahead
for the moment are in total darkness.
With the two lights set it makes no
difference which way the curve turns,
for one or the other of the headlights il
luminates the pathway.
SAVED FROM AN ANGRY COW.
Mvely Chase of a Montana Man from a
Sharp-Horned Hovlne.
While a freight train was lying over
at a small mountain station in Montana
the engineer borrowed a shotgun and
started for a bunt. He was about.re
turning to his train when a cow made
her appearance. Before he realized
that there was any danger the anmial
made a rush at him, and he ran with all
his might. But the cow was a better
racer, and in a few minutes caught him
by the clothing, splitting his coat from
waist to collar and tossing him into the
air. Getting to bis feet as quickly as
possible he dodged behind a tree, and
then, to his dismay, found that the gun
barrel was' bent so as to be useless.
Tho next ten minutes, says.the Boze
man Avant Courier, . were lively ones.
The cow chased the engineer round and
round - the tiee, and when he got a
chance to hit her with the gun barrel
I- it only seemed to enrage her the more.
It was only a question of time when he
would succumb to fatigue, when a di
version occurred which saved his life.
An angry snort was heard and a big elk
uppeared upon the ecene. head down
and prepared for-a fight. The cow was
so ma3 by this time that she was ready
for anything-, and in another moment
the two animals dashed at each other.
Tbe t-ugineer watched the combat for
a few minutes, until prudence sug
gested that he should make a retreat
while, he could. He regained the train
in safety and never knew the outcome
of the battle, but the presumption is
that the elk was the victor.
Pasteur's Carefulness.
- Once when Pasteur was dining with
bis daughter and her family at her
home. in Burgundy he took care to dip
in a glass" of water the cherries that
were served' for- dessert and then to
,wipe' them carefully with his napkin
before putting them in his mouth. His
fastidiousness amused the people at
table, but the scientist' rebuked them
for their levity and discoursed at length
on the dangers in microbes and ani
maculae. A few minutes later, in a fit
.of abstraction;' he suddenly seized tbe
glass in which be had washed the cher
ries and drank the water, microbes and
all, at a single draught.
The German Canary Trade. . .
It is not at all generally known that
Germany carries on a very large trade
in the rearing and exporting of cana
ries, and that the largest establishment
in the world for the breeding of these
creatures is situated within the do
mains of that empire, away up among
the Harts mountains of Prussia. From
this and the few surrounding but small
er nurseries, no fewer than 130,000 birds
are dispatched every year to the United
States and Canada, while in the same
time at least 3,000 go to Britain and
about 2,000' go to Russia.

None 15 ut Ayer's at the World's Fair.'
Ayer's Sarsaparilla enjoys the extra
ordinary distinction of having been the
only blood purifier allowed on exhibit at
the world's fair, Chicago. Manufact
urers of other earsaparillas sought by
every means to obtain a showing of their
goods, but they were all turned away
under the application of the rule for
bidding tbe entry of patent medicines
and nostrums. The decision of the
world's fair authorities intavor of Ayer's
: Sarsaparilla was in effect as follows:
"Ayer's Sarsaparilla Is not a patent
medicine. It does - not belong to the
list of nostrums. It is here on its
merite."

Geo. W. Jenkins, editor of the Santa
Maria "Tiinee," Cal., in speaking of the
various ailments ' of children said :
"Wrtun my children have croup there is
inly one patent medicine I ever use, and
tnas is Chamberlain's Cc-fh Remedy.
It possesses some medica properties
that relieve the little sufferet & immedi
ately. - It is, in my opinion, the beet
cough medicine in the market." If this
remedy is freely given as soon as the
croup cough appears it will prevent the
attack. It is also an ideal remedy for
whooping cough. There is no danger in
giving it to children, as it contains noth
ing injurious. For sale by Blakeley &
Houghton, Drugeiet.
In a recent editorial the Salem, Or.,
Independent says: "Time and again
have we seen Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy tried and never without the
most satisfactory results. Whenever we
see a person afflicted with hoarseness,
with a congh or cold, we invariably ad
vise them to get Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy; and when they do, they never
regret it. It always does the work, and
does it well." For sale by Blakeley &
