La Grippe, for Colds, Coughs;1
AND LUNG TROUBLES,
AYER'S PECTORAL
"Two years ago, I had the grippe,
and it left me with a cough which gave
me no rest night or day. My family
physician prescribed for me, changing
the medicine as often, as he found the
things I had taken were not helping
me, but, in spite of his attendance, I got
no better. Finally, my husband, read
ing one day of a gentleman who had
had the grippe and was cured by taking
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, procured, for
me, a bottle of this medicine, and before
I had taken half of it, I was cured. I
have used the Pectoral for my children
and in my family, whenever we have
needed it, and have found it a specific
for colds, coughs, and lung troubles."

A. O. V. W. Initiations.
In our issue of yesterday we spoke of
Detroit Lodge, A. 6. U. W. ot Chicago
initiating 659 candidates in one night.
This is the largest number of candidates
ever initiated in one (light, and Detroit
lodge i3 noted for big initiations. Their
record stands as follows: October 28th,
1887, 75; May 5th, 1888, 98 ; MaylSch,
1890,266; October 27th. 1891, 322; May
th,1892, 83; October 27th,lS92,105; De
cember 20th, 1895, 659. Nearly every re
ligious denomination in the city is rep
resented by one or more o its divines,
and Schremser's orchestra'can walk in in
a body, for there is not a member who
cannot wag his ears to suit the man at
the door. Among its members it claims
Congressman Carliss, who is past master
of the lodge, Ex congres6man Levi T.
.Griffin, Sheriff Collins, Register of

SAVED FROM AN ANGRY COW.
Lively Chase of m Montana Man from a
Sharp-Horned Bovine.
While a freight train was lying1 over
at a small mountain station in Montana
the engineer borrowed a shotgun and
started for a hunt. He was about re
turning to his train when a cow made
her appearance. Before he realized
that there was any danger the animal
made a rush at him, and he ran with all
his might. But the cow was a better
racer, and in a few minutes caught him
by" the clothing, splitting his coat from
waist to collar and tossing him into the
air. Getting to his feet as quickly as
possible he dodged behind a tree, and
then, to his dismay, found that the gun
barrel was bent so as to be useless.
The next ten minutes, says the Boze-
man Avant Courier, were lively ones
The cow chased the engineer round and
round the tiee, and when he got a
chance to hit her with the gain barrel
it only seemed to enrage her the more
It was only a question of time when he
would succumb to fatigue, when a di
version occurred which saved his life,
An angry snort was heard and a big elk
appeared upon the Econe. head down
and prepared for a fight. The cow was
so mad by this time that she was ready
for anything, and in another moment
the two animals dashed at each other,
The engineer watched the combat for
a few minutes, until prudence sug
gested that he should make a retreat
while he could. He regained the train
in safety and never knew the outcome
of the battle, but the presumption is
that the clli was the victor.
Aluminum Diamonds:
It s well known to jewelers that al
uminum will mark a glass or "paste"
diamond, but not the true gem, pro
vided the surface i3 wet. This fact has
now been applied in the production of
a mechanical tester, which consists of
a small disk of aluminum rapidly re
volved by an electric motor. The stone
to be tested is wetted and held against
the edge of the disk by means of a
spring clamp. When metallic marks
are found on the stone after this treat
ment it is rejected as false.
It May Do as Much, for You.
