A SPECIFIC -FOB- La Gripps, for Golds, Coughs, AND LUNG TROUBLES, AVER'S CHERRY PECTORAL Two years ago, I had the grippe, -and it left me with a cough which gave me no rest night or day. My family physician prescribed for me, changing the medicine as often as he found the things I had takes were not helping me, hut, in spite of his attendance, I got no better. Finally, my husband, read ing one day of a gentleman who had had the grippe and was cured by taking Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, procured, for me, a bottle of this medicine, and before I had taken half of it, I was cured. I liave used the Pectoral for my children and in my family, whenever we have needed it, and have found it a specific for colds, coughs, and lung troubles." Emily "Wood, North St., Elkton, Md. From Principal Gavin we learn that the quarter term (5 weeks) ending Fri day of last week has the highest enroll ment and average daily attendance ever recorded in the history of The Dalles public schools. In November last all previous records were broken and it was .thought that the highest mark for the -school year had been reached. The at tendance of December and January con firmed that belief by tailing short 10 in ; average daily attendance in comparison with the previous school quarter. How- -ever, the first quarter of the spring term - shows a greater number enrolled and in r attendance than during November. 'iThe exact figures are as follows: . A high water the present season like that of 1894 would undoubtedly deetroy the locks at the Caecades. Nothing that could be done would save them. It is somewhat consoling therefore to observe the opinion of the Oregoniaa that the prospects are unfavorable for a big "June rise" in the Columbia this year. 'From all reports there is but little snow in any of the mountains about the several sources of the river. This is not favor able for fishermen at the dalles and cas cades. In order for the wheels to be successful, it is necessary to have a good height of water. Fishermen who have been up the rivef, lookingover the situa tion, imagine that the wheels at the cas. cades and dalles will not do any better this year than they did last, which was a poor season for them, on account of the low water. The traps and seins and gillnets are so numerous during the sea son in the lower part of the river that it is a wonder that any salmon ever get np to the cascades or into the Clackamas. The only chance for the fish reaching the spawning grounds will be afforded during the' close season, which begins March 1st, and ends April 10th. If the fishermen can be made to keep these nets out of the rivers during this period, some fish may get up beyond their reach before it is over. AMUSING TRICK. With Which to Entertain at little Ex pense. A neat trick, affording1 considerable amusement at little expense, can be produced by causing1 a candle to burn, while almost immersed in a tumbler ot' water. The experiment is as follows: Insert a nail not too heavy in the lower end of a short candle to order to make that end heavier, and place the whole in a gtass containing enough, water to reach, the upper end of the candle without wetting1 the wick. At first thought nothing seems stranger than to expect a candle to" be entirely consumed in such a situa tion; but it is simple enough. As the candle burns it grows lighter and light er, and rises gradually as it diminishes in length, so that the lighted end always remains above the surface of the water, Moreover, the outside of the candle, being1 cooled, will melt much moreslow' iy than usual, and the flame will make a little hollow in the center. This hol low place also helps in making1 the can dle float, and preserves the wick from contact with the water. Thus the can die will continue to burn in its strange candlestick until the wick is entirely consumed. Provocation for a Lawsuit. There is a story told of a very emi nent lawyer now no longer with us, who once, while endeavoring to dis suade a friend from going to law, was asked what he would himself consider sufficient ground for resorting to litiga tion. "My dear fellow," he replied, "I do not say that under no conceivable circumstances would I take proceed ings against anyone, but I do say that if this moment you deliberately upset my ink on the table, chucked my wife out of the window, threw that volume of reports at the bust of Dickens, 'made hay' with my furniture and finally tweaked my nose, I should, no doubt, use my best endeavors to kick you down stairs; but once rid of you, either by force or persuasion, no power on earth, should induce me to bring an action against you." OMEN'S FACES like flowers, -fade and wither with time ; the bloom of the rose is only known to the healthy woman's cneelcs. The nerv ous strain caused by the . ailments and pains peculiar to the sex, and the labor and worry of rearing a familv. can often be traced by the lines in the woman's face. Dull eyes, the sallow or wrinkled face and those "feelings of weakness" have their rise in the derangements and irregularities peculiar to women. The functional de rangements, painful disorders, and chronic weaknesses of women, can be cured with Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. For the young girl just entering womanhood, for the mother and those about to become mothers, and later in "the change of life," the " Prescription " is just what they need ; it aids nature in preparing the system for the change. It's a medicine prescribed for thirty years, in the diseases of women, by Dr. R. V. Pierce, chief consulting physician to the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Insti tute, at Buffalo, N. Y. Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription will cure the chronic inflamma tion of the- lining membranes which cause such exhausting drains upon the system. It cures nervous prostration, sleeplessness, faintness, nervous debility and all disorders arising from derangement of the female organs and functions. Mrs. Jennie Williams, of Mohawk, Lant Co., uregoit, writes : 1 was sick for over three years with blind dizzy spells, palpitation of the heart, pain in the back and head, and at times would have such a weak tired feel ing when I first got up in the morning, and at times nervous chills. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a consti tutional treatment. Hall's -Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foun dation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building np the con stitution and assisting nature in doing its work.
