UNCLAIMED ESTATES. -
It ia interesting to a student of human
nature to observe how lasting and how
widespread is the delusion concerning
vast properties supposed to lie unused
in England for want of an heir; and
this in the face of the fact officially as
certained by the department of state
in Washington that no claim yet has
ever been so substantiated as that one
dollar has ever been recovered by a
claimant. Immense sums have been
forwarded to England in response to a
statement like the following that on
the receipt of one guinea they will search
records and documents relating to any
name in the list, which in one publica
tion extends to 22S pages, containing
four columns of 8ixty-seven names each,
making a total of 60,000 names. Out" of
this prodigious number of lost estates
aTid heirs there are sure to be many who
will forward a guinea on the chance, es
pecially when it is stated that if a name
should not be connected with money or
property, the guinea wjll be scrupu
lously returned. Those peopln devort
believers in Martin Chuzzlewit, - w! o
think America the natural home of a'!
deceivers and false pretenders should
bear in mind that these circulars ema
nate from purely English sources.
The governments of Great Britain and
our own are in accord to stamp out this
delusion and the working of those who
try to profit by it as much as possible.
The claimants to the Jennens or Jen
nings estates are so numerous that a
Jennings Claim Association has been
founded, located in Canada, with en
trance fees and assessments levied an
nually for the benefit of the' unscrupu
lous managers. This claim has been re
peatedly before the courts, and in
November, 1880, Vice Chancellor Malins,
when giving judgment against the
claimant; remarked: "If such a claim
could be allowed, no one would be safe
in the possession of his property."
The Bank of England declares that
there are no large sums unclaimed on
their books, as has een aseerted. All
these prominent claims haye been the
object of special investigation, under au
thority of our own state department,
and have been shown to be baseless.
Had they not been, the recent statute
known as the Personal Property Act,
the Real Property Limitation Act and
the Intestate Act, makes it positive that
any attempt to recover real eState from
the crown or individuals after a lapse of
twelve years, which, under certain cir-.
ca instances, may be extended to thirty,
and personal property after a lapse of
twenty years, however valid the claim
to the property may have been origin
aDy, is certain to end in failure.
Exit Dunraven ! The charges pre
fered by the defeated English lord
against the owners of defender' are
. completely disapproved and the com
mittee of investigation exonerates in
every 'particular the gentlemen accused
by lonraven. The dispatches today
etate that Dunraven refuses to talk r,
conclusion he should have come lo
months ago. All lovers of true sport
will lejoice in Danraven's discomfiture,
as he has shown himself lacking in the
instincts of a gentleman, who can grace
fully accept defeat.
For once justice has been avenged
Lloyd Montgomery's execution will go
a long ways in showing that the law
does' not 'always fail of its intents. A
delay in the execution of this red
banded murderer.would have done incal
cuable barm in causing a disgust for our
legal administration. For once justice
has triumphed and the good name of the
state saved from diehonor.
THE DALLES AND PENDLETON
TOO. MUCH IN DEBT.
The Dalles school district has war
rants outstanding to the amount of $6,
580. It appears that all the school dis
tricts of the larger towns have made too
free use of the pernicious credit system.
Pendleton's floating indebtedneFS is
above $50,000. This means that 4000 a
year has to be contributed by taxpayers
to pay interest. This is a burden that
can be and should be eliminated by the
strictest economy. Pendleton's govern
ment costs more than it is worth. It
costs more by far than the government
of The Dalles, which is as large a town
as Pendieton. East Oregonian.
The New Kugland Comedy.
Uncle Jish Spruceby will be presented
at The Dalles, Tuesday, February 4th.
The central figure is, of course, Uucle
Josh, the honest old New ..England
farmer, and his quaint humor and rustic
simplicity keep the audience in uproar
continually. Special scenery and effects
will be introduced, including the won
derful sawmill scene. The funny street
par&de of the "hayseed" band takes
place at noon, and no doubt will be
watched for with interest. Seats are
now on sale at Blakeley & Houghton's.
The v following is from the Hartford
Herald:
'Uncle Josh Spruceby" played at the
opera . house last night to a crowded
house and the most enthusiastic audi
ence to which any show has played this
season. The play is something new and
in its freshness lies the secret of its suc
cess. There are no overdrawn scenes or
actions, but a truthful and natural pict
ure of New England life. The company
throughout is first-class and if our opera
house had more of fSis class of plays in
stead of some of the empty farces which
have played here, Hartford would have
no cause to complain.
