The Wheat Situation.
The first of the year finds the wheat
situation not meeting expectations,
The expected high prices have not come
nor can it be said that the indications
are bright, at the present, of any im
mediate rise, While it is true that both
buyers and sellers are disappointed at
the way things are going, yet it's early in
the fight and a month or two may see a
difference. A European war, while it
would mean misery on the other side of
the Atlantic, would be a blessing to the
American farmer. The following, taken
from the Commercial Review, gives an
intelligent view of the situation in Port
land :
Five months of the present cereal year
have passed and exporters have dis
patched fortv-three vessels, containine
3,533,721 bushels of wheat and 100,968
Darreis oi nour to European ports, and
there is still one-half of the present crop
id me couniry. ling aoes not include
China and San Francisco shipments
The obstinacy of holders has been clearlv
ehown when wheat was selling at 54c
per bushel, a great many unloaded their
holdings, the majority heldon for higher
prices; at that time we stated that the
exporters here were paying all the stuff
was worth, and we were accused of
standing in with them. Now Walla
Walla wheat is worth about 50c, and
possibly some could get as much as 51c
for good round lots, and the prospect for
Higher prices seems aim. from tbe pres
ent outlook ot the situation we would
not be surprised to see prices go still
lower. . There is nothing as yet to make
the same advance, though earlier in the
season we bad hopes that prices would be
firmer by the nrst ot the year. The out
look then was better, and we find our
selves mistaken, with many others. As
formerly stated in these columns, ex
porters bad all the wheat for loading re
quirements to Jan. 1, they saw no ne
cessity to increase their bids for wheat,
and that by the tarn of the year
this port would De luny cleaned up
witn engaged snips, our predictions nave
proved trne: the ships now id port are
all finishing, and exporters are not in
need of any wheat for the present, and
wbat ships are likely to arrive will have
their wants quickly filled. Tonnage due
is very small, and what should arrive in
January and February will receive
prompt dispatch.
The markets here daring the week
have been in the same condition as the
eastern markets, dull and lifeless, with
very little doing, and.no prospect for
betterment in the near future. Ship
pers are quoting Walla Walla at 4950,
alley 53c per bushel. - Millers are pay
ing 51 and 54c respectively for the same.

A Surprise I'arty to Miss Dtoilnf.
A merry crowd of young people as
sembled last evening at the residence of
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Biggs to give Miss
Ethel Deming a genuine surprise. The
young ladies and gentlemen met at the
home of Miss Nellie Sylvester, and then
repaired to the Biggs residence, where
the young lady, in whose honor the
nprty had been arranged, was taken
completely by surprise. The evening
was spent in playing "Progressive
Logomachy" a game which is coming
into much favor as a diversion for social
gatherings. Dr. Frazier was successful
in obtaining the head prize, while Frank
Wood won the booby. Dainty refresh
ments were served during the evening.
At a late hour the guests departed, wish
ing that these pleasant surprises would
come oftener. Those present were:
Misses Ethel Deming, Lorene Lee, Nellie
Sylvester, Edith Randall, Mabel Riddel,
Lizzie Schooling, Lola " Eubank ; - Dr.
Frazier, Dr. Sturdevant, Chester Starr,
George Campbell, Charles Campbell,
Ed. Michel, Edward Hill and Frank
Wood.
Last night was an eventful one at. the
whist clab. The early part of the even
ing was spent . as the evenings gen
erally are, with playing whist, and when
the points were counted it was found
that Mrs. Glenn had won the bead prize
andMr. Hosteller the booby. Daring
the counting of the votes, several ladies
left the room and some inquiry was made
where they had gone. Soon, however,
a knock was' heard And in , came the
ladies carrying baskets ' full of good
things. Tbe tables were set, lots drawn
for partners and all partook of the un
expected banquet. The feast was
sumptuous and occasioned a good supply
of wit and mirth. At its close, the room
was cleared for dancing and the fun was
fast and furious. Tbe members of tbe
whist club are noted for their ability for
enjoyment, and last night -they had a
full measure. The gentlemen of the
club were so pleased with the' ladies'
surprise that they are willing it should
be done again. Mr. and Mrs. J. B.
Croe'sen were the entertainers.
