TUESDAY. - - DECEMBER 31. 1S95
.1 SUMMING VP.
'Today marka the close of a year,
which, from a commercial and financial
standpoint, baa been a very eucceesnl
one for The Dalles. In looking back
over the twelve months", whose days are
at an end, many ami substantial im
provements are noticed. Aa a rnle
business men liav prospered. There
have been chaugcs among our mer
chants soma have sold out, and one or
two death baa visited ; but none have
been unable to continue business
through lack of prosperity. This show
ing is a very good one. In a year upon
wmcn me tan end ot a eevere panic
rests, to have no withdrawals from
business due to failure, ia to declare
that the commercial life of The Dalles
draws its eustenance from healthful
sources. Many of our business men
have enlarged their interests. Larger
stocks and more varied are being carried
than were a year ago, and the balancing
of the books will show that prudence,
foresight and economy have been re
warded. To the list of stores at the be
ginning of the year new ones have been
aauea. ins lame oi ilie ualles as a
good business point has gone widely
abroad, and men from other towns after
coming hereand looking over the ground,
have cast their lot with us.
Our public schoals have been a source
of satisfaction and: good to the town
Under the management of the present
principal and corps of teachers a high
standard haa been maintained, and
many pupils from neighboring counties
and different placea in this county have
been" attracted to The Dalles because of
its educational advantages. The nam
ber of familie8 who for this reason make
this city their winter home, is largo, and
the results, from intellectual, social
and financial standpoints, can be easily
discerned.
wur, population naa neen much in
creased. This can be told by the fact
that about forty new dwellings have
been built this year, and yet every
residence is occupied. The city has
gained much in appearance by the resi
deuces that have been built. They are
modern in plan, and built not onlv for
comfort, but to please a discriminating
eye.
The prosperity which has attended
the Dalies, Portland and Astoria Navi-
wuuipany ia a cause oi rejoicing
to every citizen. During the year, soon
at an end, the Regulator and Dalles City
have done a large and lucrative busi
ness. During the past season many
tons of wool and wheat were taken by
boat from The Dalles to Portland, there
to be shipped East. A ten per cent div
idend was declared last summer, which
added $3,800 to the cash capital of the
town. Instead of swelling the coffers of
a foreign corporation, the money which
shippers pay to the Regulator line comes
again into circulation at home. The
building of a mammoth warehouse,
j&vzbO feet, shows that the business of
the D. P. & A. N. Co. is expanding.
Socially this year has been a pleasant
one. frequent gatherings have served
to bring the people closer together and
establish kindly feelings. By no means
can the The Dalles be said to be lacking
in amusements, and its residents and
those who visit it find many means of
passing pleasant hours. The starting of
ine commercial and Athletic Club is
one of the good things thia year has
eeen done. Much is expected of this or
ganization. It is hoped that by dis
cussing matters of importance to the
town, our general progress may be has
tened. The Commercial and Athletic
Club will have many opportunities to be
of service to the community.
.: With 1S95 closes a satisfactory year
for The Dalles. Its advanca has been
steady. No boom has ever visited the
town; we want none. The future is
brighter than the past has ever been ;
the possibilities are unlimited. All that
ia needed is a unity of purpose in work
ing for the city's good. Petty factions
must be laid aside, and every citizen
work and labor to make The Dalles what
Nature intended the permanent me
tropolis and chief commercial city ol
Eastern Oregon..
..Portland is to have a one-cent daily.
The Argu?, a paper now issued on Sui -day,
makes the announcement that soon
after the new year it will begin the pub
lication of a daily for the price men
tioned. In view of the disastrous out
comes which have attended opposition
papers in Portland, it takes a great deal
of hope and courage to Etart even a five
cent paper, to say nothing of one for a
cent. We doubt if Portland ia metro
politan enough to support the venture.
The best thiag that will happen to
thia country in 1836 is the election next
November. Compared to the political
overturning that will then take place,
tiie landslides of '94 and '95 will be in
significant. The coming year will be
memorable as maiking the time when
the American people passed from under
the dark shadow of Democratic misgov-ernment.
A statement of the value of declared
exports ft cm the consular - district of
Bradford to the United States during
the month of November, 1895, and com
paring it with November, 1894, shows a
net increase of the former month over
the latter of $1,026,575. This ia but a
drop in the bucket in the great export
trade which England carrits on with
the United States.
The Chronicle joins with everyone
in wishing everyone elee a Happy New
Year. To our city the coming vear
should be the brightest of all the num
ber in its history. At the clo3e of 1896
we hope the bright anticipations that
now we hold may be chronicled as real
ization.
The Regulator left this morning for
her last trip to the Cascades till after a
season of rest, during which extensive
repairs will be made upon the boat.
These will occupy at least a month. The
arrangements are completed for taking
the steamer out of the river and giving
a general overhauling and repairing.
Several years of hard and steady woik
have made euch repairs . necessary.
Many people took advantage of the
steamer's last trip to vieit the Locks and
the decks contained a crowd of passen
gers as the boat backed away from the
dock. About twenty young ladies made
up an excursion party " to the Locks and
they started off in high lee. The day
promised to bo a stormy one, but we
will warrant the young people will -man
age to have a good timo anyhow. The
stopping of the boat, while it is a stern
necessity, will not be very welcome to
the dwellers on the Washington side of
the river, and they will Tsten to the first
eound ot the Regulator's whistle with
pleasure when regular trips are begun
again.
