LOST HIS BALANCE
A Terrible Accident in the
Dekum Building.
FRANK BAKER FALLS 80 FEET
LISDS HEAD FIRST ON A STOOL
Convoyed to Good Samaritan Hospital,
T are He Soon STes ol Con
cuuloa of the 15 rain.
Portland, Or. Dec. 30. A frightful
accident occurred this moaning in the
Dekum building, on Third and Wash
ington streets.
Frank Baker, a janitor, aged about 26
years, was engaged in cleaning the out
side t the windows leading into the
court on the fifth floor, when he lost
his equilibrium and fell a distance of
about 80 feet into Lipman, Wolfe & Co.'a
store. ....
The poor fellow's coining was heralded
by the smashing of skylight glass during
his terrible descent, and for a monent or
two almost created a panic among the
lady clerks in the establishment, who
imagined the shivering of glass to be
caused by an earthquake.
The incipient panic, though, changed
into horror, when Baker landed, head
foremost, on a stool in front of a coun
try, behind which several lady clerks
were standing. The velocity of the fall
was so great that when Baker's head
struck the stool, the plush-covered eeat
was broken from its screw fastening.
That- Baker was not instantly killed' is
due, duly to some wire "netting covering
Liprncn, Wolfe & Co.'s skylight, which
measurably broke the fall.
When Baker landed on the floor of the
store, an exclamation of horror went up
from those nearest the scene. In a sec
ond, though, the majority of the small
army of clerks were near the prostrate
form of the unfortunate man. Dr. An
drew C. Smith was close bv when .the
accident occurred, and ho volunteered
his services. A superficial examination
of Baker showed no exterior injury be
yond a cut in the chin, from which the
blood flowed quite profusely a short
time. But even the unprofessional eye
could detect at a glance that Baker was
suffering intensely, and that his struggle
with death would be a hard one.'
. He never uttered a word during all
the time he was lying in the store, and
even while being removed to the hospit
al. Dr. Smith stated the man has sus
tained what in all probability would
prove a fatal concussion of the brain.
Meanwhile a large crowd had blocked
the Washington and Third-street en
trances to the store, so that the doors
had to be closed and a policeman sta
tioned thereto prevent the outsiders from
overrunning the establishment. ' ,
For almost a half hour before Baker's
removal to Good Samaritan hospital.
Dr. Smith feared every moment that the
unfortunate man would die on the spot
from hemorrhage of the brain. At one
tune it seemed as if Baker could not sur
vive another minute; but Dr. Smith,
just in the nick of time, succeeded in re
storing circulation, thus giving him a
new lease of life. At that point Offi
cers Watson and Crete placed Baker on
a stretcher and conveyed him to the hos
pital in the police ambulance.
Dr. Smith's diagnosis os Baker's case
was a correct one, for he died at 11
o'clock without having regained con
sciousness. Baker was a young man of very good
habits, and well though of by those
knowing him. He had been employed
in the Dekum building for the past six
months, and also lodged there. He was a
. single'man,' and a brother-in-law of Dr,
Li. M. Davis, of Albina. The" body was
taken in charge by Finley & Bieger.
Coroner Cornelius may hold an inquest
this evening.

THE LONDON FOGS.
Dryenfnrth Has a Scheme to Dispel
Them.
Detbiot, Dec. 30. General E. G. Dry
e'n'urtb, the rain-maker, has a echeme
to dispel the famous London fog. He
has been in correspondent with the lead
ing officials of that city and a fund of
$50,0()0 will be raised with which to con
duct experiments. Hundreds of thous
ands of dollars a day would be saved in
the metropolis alone if the fo could be
done away with. The Dryenfurth fog
scheme is only a varation of his rain
making oce. It includes the use of hy
drogen gas and explosive balloons. His
plan is to establish fog stations below
the city and begin his campaign against
it as the fog rolls in from the sea. His
bombardment of the ekies would pro
duce rain, he says, and when the preci
pitation" was started the fog would be
dispelled. ' : : '
